everything in life
People talk about wanting to recover so that they can re-gain their old selves, their old passions, their old interests
What do you do when you don't have an old self to go back to and re-gain? There wasn't a 'me' before mental illness or if there was I don't remember them
When you start struggling with your mental health at a young age, it becomes all that you know and your identity can become distorted around it
Now I'm an adult who has no idea what they like, what they enjoy or even how to comfort themselves
What am I supposed to do with myself and how am I supposed to find reasons to recover when it feels like drowning is all I know?
Having depression is inherently depressing.
That is ā when every tiny task is utterly exhausting, it's pretty frustrating. When you once weren't exhausted by these tasks āĀ when you know you used to be someone else ā that's downright devastating. When you're wondering whether you're going to get that energy back and not knowing, that's also exhausting.
When you are feeling inherently more stupid because depression has cognitively ruined you, that's embarrassing and confusing and so upsetting. When you are unsure whether you will ever get your old cognition back, that's terrifying. When you do not, in fact, ever return to pre-depression baseline, that's just exhausting.
When you are numb, trying to go through the motions of happiness; sadness; fear; frustration; and phatic interest is so, so tiring. When you cannot effectively perform these emotion states, it is embarrassing and isolating.
When you are too tired and too numb to be social, you are alone.
'What do you have to be depressed about?' Well, this disease is inherently giving me something to be depressed about. And it's very easy to want to cling to that, because at least it's an answer.
And frankly, I think folks who haven't gone through depression may not understand that oftentimes, recovery from a bad episode is kinda piecemeal. My cognition, my disposition, and my capacity for optimism are all substantially altered from where they were preādepression. I cannot take the person I used to be for granted, and I cannot take the beliefs I used to hold as gospel. Even when I'm not depressed, depression has altered most parts of my life and thoroughly warped my sense of self. I cannot safely believe in baseline happiness at this point.
I'm not saying this to complain, but to make a point. Depression alters your life in ways that, even outside of a depressive episode, give you things to be depressed about. It can completely ruin your sense of who you are, what your world is, and what your future holds. It makes it that much more tempting to believe in the depression narrative of loneliness and helplessness, and it makes those narratives subjectively very real. All of this makes the depression (should it return) and its consequences (however monumentally they've carved into your life) so much harder to deal with.
I love and hate when I feel nothing. I go through periods where my mind is radio silent and where I donāt lash out. Iām not happy, Iām not sad, Iām not angry, Iām just nothing. Itās nice to feel nothing until my life is consumed by it. I crave to feel something, because numbly staring out into space gets boring and makes me feel fake. But, when I do feel, itās all I feel. Itās always so intense and I never get a break. I just want to feel and think normally without having these thoughts take over and ruin everything for me. I hate feeling broken, why canāt I just be normal?
sorry if i ghosted you, i wanted to die
Just seasonal self-destruction š
been like this for a while now, i donāt think that things will change
crazy how putting your mental health before your future is great until it affects your future which affects your mental health which affects your future
ādo you do any type of sportsā - yeah i run away from my problems on a daily basis.
i never know how to answer the question āhow are you doingā
Everybody around me has some kind of dreams, goals for the future.
When I look at the future, it's just an empty darkness.
I feel numb. No tears, no anger, nothing. Just going through the same day again and again. I would rather just sleep without waking up.
I just donāt want to feel anything anymore. Iām tired, drained, exhausted. Just let me die already.
I used to think that if I donāt kill myself by a certain age then itās off the table until I realized you literally have your whole life to think about it.
