The Price of Peace by Zyla_SweetBean, 31K, Gen - HPSC All Might! decides to go against his assigned mission to kill AFO's son, Izuku, but changes his mind because he starts to care for Izuku. VERY morally ambiguous All Might and overall just a dark AU but happy ending.

You Die A Hero, Or... by Ilentari, 10K, Teen - SO GOOD, had me on the edge of my seat the whole time! Set during Dark Hero Arc, All Might is restored to his former glory and convinces Izuku to give him OFA back. He takes Quirkless! Izuku to a safe house, basically, kidnapping.
Idol Worship by Ilentari, 3k, Teen - Possessive Izuku in this one but hes not a villain! I very much enjoyed this. Insecure Toshinori doesn't know how to accept that Izuku adores him.
favorite thing in the whole wide world when a story is about how a typically “negative” trait is the one essential to saving the day. a character whose anger pushes them further than any of their kinder aspects. someone so stubborn that they cross a finish line no one else could reach. greed that becomes justification to protect people. ruthlessness that gets the job done right. the coward who becomes a hero because they were the only one with the sense not to face something deadly head on. selfishness that keeps you alive.
I love when our ‘worst’ impulses are shown to be as important to who we are and how we handle things as the best parts of us. sometimes you don’t conquer what everyone says is wrong with you; sometimes you learn how to make use of what comes naturally instead of fighting against it.

Real thing that changed how i write: I started asking "what does this character think is wrong with them" and separately "what is actually wrong with them." Those two things are almost never the same. She thinks she's too much. She's actually terrified of being too little. He thinks he's bad at commitment. He's actually just never met someone he trusted enough. The gap between their diagnosis of themselves and the real thing, that's your character arc right there. you don't have to explain it. just write both.
random but here is a recipe for cold peanut noodles that you can make during hot weather because i just ate this and had a fantastic time
2tbsp of peanut butter. a splash of rice vinegar, soy sauce, sesame oil, maple syrup. some chili flakes, some sesame seeds. a splash of water to thin it out. now you put in your noodles (cooled!!!! boiled and rinsed so they’re cold!!) and then some chopped up cucumber or carrot or avocado or cabbage or any crunchy vegetable. i just used cucumber
you can also put in lime juice or herbs or sriracha or grated garlic/ginger or anything like that; tofu/tempe/meat for more protein etc. noodle wise this can be ramen soba udon whatever, i used soba. enjoy homies
dont store a knife with the point facing down, it damages the blade. no, dont do that either. when you store it with the point facing up you might accidentally hurt yourself when you try to grab it. dont store a knife at all actually. your blade must never leave your hand, always ready, ruthless and waiting. you know deep down that ever since you learned the stench of blood you will never be able to cast it aside. or just get a sheath for it i guess.

Incredible book alert for you all, since I know how many of my friends and followers are also neurodivergent. I've been requesting that our local library buy more ADHD and autism-friendly cookbooks aimed at adults, in an effort to find one that might help me with fixing my extremely broken relationship with food. And for a while it was a bit demoralizing because a lot of them are more recipe-focused, so I'd read them and go "Wow, this book is aimed at people like me and I can't eat any of this stuff, I must be even more broken than I thought"
Enter "How to Eat Well for Adults With ADHD" by Rebecca King.
I am about to sound like a sponsored ad, but this book is absolutely incredible. It's written by a nutritionist with ADHD, and does include some recipes, but they only make up a part of the third section of the book. The rest of it is focused on practical, broadly applicable advice for neurodivergent folks (and frankly, other disabled people) on unlearning internalized ableism around food, how to best organize your kitchen and meal plan (and what to do when meal plans fail), the connections between food and dopamine and how best to use food for stimulation in a healthy way, how hyperfocus and time blindness can get in the way of eating well, how to make sure you're eating enough while on stimulants, the fact that many ADHD people also have ARFID (and the book even emphasizes that ARFID is an eating disorder, not just "picky eating"!!), and takes the strong stance that we should do away with the idea of "picky eaters" altogether in favor of a more compassionate stance on people's complicated relationships with food and eating.
It is strongly anti-diet culture while still emphasizing that good nutrition is important. It has extremely specific tips that make my ADHD heart sing a little, like how best to store specific vegetables so they last the maximum amount of time in your fridge (since we are all very good at forgetting they are there) and what tools can make doing the dishes more manageable. And perhaps most importantly, as someone with severe sensory sensitivities and some very real trauma from having them ignored as a kid and being shamed for them, it made me cry a little bit with how understanding and compassionate it is.
Anyway. I am going to buy a copy of my own immediately, and I cannot recommend it enough. If you, like me, are trying to unfuck your eating habits and neat someone to hold your hand a little in the process -- while still making you feel like an adult, and still offering actionable tips along the way -- this book could be a lifesaver.

Fascinated by everyone's but especially American's desire to give medieval keeps, especially in colder regions, central heating (and I think Winterfell is to blame for this trope, where, to it's defence, the hot springs were not a matter of comfort but survival wrt the deadly fantasy Winter that's not real irl), because I'm always like. okay I know they told you in middle grade that castles were all cold and drafty but like ... no also what
There's generally going to be rooms dedicated to and build for warmth, the living quarters, both for nobles and their servants. This will be the central living tower, or parts of it called a Kemenate (literally 'room with a stove'), the great hall and work spaces around the kitchen. You can put the Kemenate on top of the hall to catch the big fires' and daily living's heat through the wooden floor, but you often can't put wooden stuff on top of the kitchens (that's a fire risk). If you have the money and space, you build a whole separate comfy place for living because you don't have to stay in the most defensible part of the castle all the time. These separate living buildings are also called Kemenate and are often build from wood, cob, brick etc.
People used to wear much more clothes indoors, including while sleeping, and those clothes were much thicker and sturdier than what we largely wear today. Every time you think of how cold those stone walls are, think about everyone wearing a linen shift + two-ish layers of wool on all body parts except hands and head + stockings and shoes + some kind of head-covering. In Ye Old Middle Ages, women are probably wearing a wimple, which is kind of like a modern Hijab in terms of coverage. People wear shifts, socks, and a head-covering to bed.
I think people used to radiators also really underestimate how much a large open fire/tiled stove heats up a room. Also, middle and northern Europe (as well as parts of Northern China) had and to this day have beds and benches build into tiled and cob stoves. Those fuck.
Beds are enclosed so you stay warm in them, either by curtains, in wall niches or with wood. There's also a type of bed that's inside a chest (like a coffin) so you can stuff your stuff inside during the day and put down the lid to use it as a bench. That's also another reason for people to always sleep in groups. Depending on the era, one of the jobs of a lady's maid or a retainer might literally be warming their master's bed. In early times and among servants, people also sleep in large groups in rooms together in general even outside a farming context, often with animals like pet dogs, too, which further warms everything up.
Walls are not bare, cold stone, but covered with a layer of plaster or cob, tiles or wooden panels, sometimes layered, and believe me, this makes such a difference. Source: I lived in a Ye Olde German Farmhouse with 70 cm thick stone walls and flag stone floor and all that converted to modern flats for a while.
On top of that you hang tapestries on the wall, which are not like modern printed cloth but basically wall rugs, sometimes several inches thick, and rugs or rushes (like a light cover of hay) on the floor on top of stone, tile, wooden panelling or a cob floor cover that goes over the heave flag stone. Pillows and blankets on all sitting surfaces, often on top of panelling (in the case of benches build into the stone). The roof of a room is also tiled, panelled or plastered. Upper stories will generally have wooden floors. Stories in a tower heat each other upwards, so the nicer rooms are further up.
The inner stone walls of a castle, even if stone and very thick, will heat up a few degrees in comparison to the outside walls if the castle is continually heated/lived in, and also trap heat inside, and this will make a difference. Inner walls might also be thinner and made of wood, cob or brick. You're defending against the outside, after all.
You put stuff in the windows. Holy shit. Screens of wood, horn, cloth or leather/hide, often treated for extra insulation. Why are these fantasy castles all so drafty.
Like, idk, I know Americans especially can't pop down to their nearby castle museum to have a look around, but even with people who can and do: The castles you'll see, even the ones who aren't 'ruined' are ruins. They're stripped down. I remember touring Norman towers in England, and those places do look dire and are cold because even if they're still standing, they're ruins. It makes such a difference to get to look at a castle that is still lived in, has been inhabited until recently, or has been historically restored where these amenities are preserved. The exact amenities will depend on the era, of course, but they'll be there. The publicly accessible parts of Burg Eltz are a great example to google, especially since I promise you, you have seen this specific castle before. They have pictures on their English language website here, and the German National Geographic has a few further inside pictures here. Seeing a place like that that isn't a ruin with bare, stripped walls, nothing in the windows, no decorations and furniture etc. makes you realise that yeah actually. My characters are probably just gonna go grab a pillow if their ass is cold on the window's stone bench. Blankets are a pretty old technology, humans (elves, dwarves, whatever) can figure that one out.

Yes, yes, unequalled representation of unspeakable grief and guilt and horror, that's not important right now. Look at how heavily carpeted everything is -- multiple layers of carpets! -- and how heavily dressed they are.
I also want to add, low level servants might be employed to sleep outside their master's door to block the drafts, it's one of the reasons the doors open inwards
rush flooring was layers deep, and was both cleaner and a soft warm surface to sleep on, so large halls [or peasant hovels] would have rush strewn floors to keep them warm
Dr Ruth Goodman [patron saint of all historical writers] did a series where she and a few other historians worked on a project in France to build a new castle using medieval techniques. It's called Secrets of the Castle and is currently available on youtube [the historian losing his mind over a plumb bob is a treat, modern builders still use a plumb bob and he acts like they found it under the pyramids and is a revolutionary tool that hasn't been seen for two thousand years, and the carpenter beside him is "can you believe this idiot"]
there's lots of great resources for the historical or fantasy writer, unfortunately most fantasy series haven't used them

Disclaimer: I am NOT a scientist and I'm just doing this for fun (but I don't mind suggestions and feedback!)

I watched the movie Iron Lung and tried to work backward, figuring out how Blood would be able to do all... that.
It burns through Simon's skin, but it also grows Blood Eel teeth on his face, AND melds his arm to the Iron Lung.
Red blood cells by themselves can't really do all that, and I struggled to figure out why so much blood would be there, surviving outside a body in a liquid form, and doing all the mutating stuff.
So... Bacteria!
There's this plant bacteria, Agrobacterium, that docks on wounded plant cells (using T4SS: Type IV Secretion System) and gives its T-DNA or T-Strand to the cell, and the cell takes it into its nucleus and starts growing a tumor, basically that benefits Agrobacterium. Here's the youtube video I watched explaining it.
I'm sure there's a lot of other cool bacteria I could have done, but PLANTS. Simon mutated/melded with/ 'became the soil' for the Blood Tree, so I took Agrobacterium and ran with it.
Why blood?
Simon's universe is dying. There are moons with life on them, but most planets and stars have been 'Raptured'. Like most Bloodymary fans, it's a cool crossover to think that Simon's universe is one where the astrophage problem was never fixed. Planets can't really disappear, but they would definitely change. But if there was no sun or the sun was too dim, Venus and Threeworld would start to freeze. Carbon dioxide-rich environments would be hard to find in a dying universe. The Astrophage overeats and ruins its own environment. (I'll make another post about how the astrophage is different in Simon's world.)
Agroglobin started off not looking like a blood cell, but it needs heat to have enough energy to survive, so it figures out a way (by accident) to entice the Astrophage to come to the moon it's living on. Carbon Dioxide.
There are some creatures on the blood moon like eels, angler fish, and frogs and when the Agroglobin encountered these native species, they did two things: injected DNA and stole DNA. It encountered human blood and liked its blueprint. It also really likes BONE because that's where blood cells originate.
Blood cells can 'hold' oxygen- it's like fuel for the bacteria to produce as much carbon dioxide as possible. (I had to figure out how they get oxygen in the first place, but I won't get into that yet). Also, mitochondria produce a lot of CO2 so it's there as well. There are also the chemoreceptor arrays to allow it to 'sense' stuff using chemotaxis to help it figure out which items are the most beneficial things to steal.
There are these hairs on bacteria called Type IV Pili that can grab stuff and pull it back into itself. If the cell bursts when it injects its DNA, then it will use the pili to steal the DNA or proteins or other useful stuff. If it doesn't then it uses the T4SS to transfer stuff between the two cells.
Basically, it takes whatever helps it survive better, and blood cells happen to do that.
Astrophage was desperate enough to go far enough into the environment to linger in the blood- making it boiling hot. It traps some weaker astrophage that doesn't have enough energy to leave. So there's astrophage in the blood ocean. (Grace freaks out about this)
Agrobacterium needs a wound to get its DNA into the cell, astrophage solves that problem. It makes it hot enough to burn Simon's skin, and the Agroglobin can insert its DNA into the cells.
Weaker cells just burst, and the agroglobin takes any proteins or useful DNA it finds. If it's not useful, it will just spit it back out.
But the cells that are strong enough to host the Agrobacterium DNA are where we get the mutation part. Skeletal muscle cells and plant cells are strong enough to host, so the Agroglobin puts its DNA into those cells, and it begins to mutate.
When it finds a useful mutation, it will multiply very fast using binary fission (like E. Coli) but much faster because it's science fiction and that makes it scarier.
It will damage its host until it finds a good (survivable) mutation that keeps the host alive long enough to be useful to the agroglobin. It does this to the Blood Eel that started out a pretty regular fish that got mutated by the bacteria that basically took over. It keeps adding to the Blood Eel, its strongest host. Thus: the human body parts that are a part of the Blood Eel. (also how it somehow speaks to Simon- this is less scientifically explainable, but whatever happened- it's the bloods fault.)
I'll make another post about what this means specifically for Simon when I post chapter five! I don't want to spoil too much here.
