It's so interesting to see people's brains falling out when it comes to veganism.
We know there are poc radfems, but "all vegans are white". On radblr we're almost all poor, but "all vegans are rich". We criticise the generalisation of all women, poor people, disabled people, lesbians etc., but "all vegans eat this one unsustainable product and meateaters never eat veggies or apples or almonds and rice and beans are suddenly no longer food and vegans only eat expensive unsustainable shit from wholefoods."
Also, we talk about compassion and our connection to the earth on here, make jokes about the fact that we have more dna in common with female chimps than with human males and yet "vegans are the crazy ones for not wanting female animals to be sexually violated, forcibly impregnated and have their babies killed so we can exploit them for their breastmilk."
Like, the disconnect is insane.
Suddenly facts don't matter. Suddenly leather production doesn't poison entire Indian rivers, massive scale fur farming and anally electrocuting animals isn't cruel, grassfed beef is magically sustainable (what rainforest?), the 2% of soy production meant for human consumption is destroying the world, eating fish is so good for our planet that more than half the plastic shit in the oceans comes from the fishing industry and we'll havr fishless oceans in two decades, and exploiting poor nations and buying up all their grains and feeding it our livestock doesn't magically make poor people starve cause they can no longer afford to buy bread.
Also magically animals have no metabolism that means that a very large percentage of the calories we feed them are lost, as is the water the 65 billion land animals we slaughter every year need to drink. Nope, all that is crazy vegan propaganda.
Also cheese isn't addictive, casomorphins only work on babies, saturated fat isn't responsible for many top ten human killers, no-seree, and also male chickens magically don't exist and don't need to be ground alive for not laying eggs.
It's seriously as if as soon as the V word pops up all critical thinking leaves the building. People don't even debate, they just spread lies and misconceptions and stick their fingers in their ears, only seeking validating opinions and retreating to baby-pig-ass-eating echo chambers.
You had me until the second to last paragraph. You really just said bye to science there. There is actually no scientific proof that casomorphins can cause addiction or even behave like opiates. It was speculated that they might do so, and people continue to say that even though there are actually studies showing the opposite, and none confirming it. Similarly, saturates fats were simply assumed to be bad for health and it actually has been disproven since then, because faulty assumptions were made.
It really sounds like you have a “good food/bad food” mentality which is not only not how the world works, but also is a common indicator of disordered eating.
Being vegetarian or vegan because the big meat industry is harming the environment is great. Acting like meat and dairy should never be consumed even if they are from local or individual animals because you think they are bad foods is absurd.
I know that cheese isn't actual morphine, and I shouldn't have used the word "addictive", because it's obviously not a hard drug. The group of proteins we call (beta)-casomorphines do have an affect on our bodies (they call it "opioid activity" in the lierature), on our pain perception etc. They are crucial for mother-child bonding, and some people do eat enough cheese (highly concentrated amounts of mothers milk) in a single meal that equals the amount of low-dose therapeutic morphine. (Pound of cheese pizzas, e.g.) It doesn't make you high, it just makes you feel good. As do the high levels of salt and fat in it. I'm at work right now so I don't have my nutrition books/uni portal here, but if you could name/link the studies/trials that disprove the effect of these (beta)-casomorphines I would love to read it (have to write a paper on it next spring).
Saturated fat is proven to raise LDL levels. It's taught in my nutrition class, so please can you send me a link and I'll see if it's a study we haven't seen yet. I'm always open to read new information, because we can discuss/research it in our group.
