I feel like simply calling JK Rowling a transphobe isn't strong enough anymore. Like. This is not your grandpa calling you by your deadname at a restaurant kind of transphobic. This is her wanting to eradicate all trans people (with an extra special hatred towards trans women specifically). This is her trying just that by personally funding transphobic hate groups with millions to push around laws in the UK. It is not hyperbolic to call her a dangerous, genocidal maniac.

Washington Post is paywalling the article but it looks like Taylor Farms — a consumer bagged salad brand that also supplies produce to grocers and fast food chains like Taco Bell, Walmart, McDonald's, Chipotle, Burger King, KFC, and Meijer —may be at least one of the sources of the current cyclosporiasis outbreak.

Taylor makes bagged greens, salad kits, chopped salads, the works. Keep avoiding supermarket greens, but keep an especially close eye out for this brand/supplier. there's no satisfaction in being right about the boat sinking when you are also on the boat, never mind below decks, with no hope of a rescue. I don't like smugly saying I Told You So because despite being ardent and vocal and pushing for strategies to mitigate climate change, my people are still dying. Thousands of people scrambling for protection and safety, while a bunch of white colonizers complain about the smell of smoke.

None of this is new. It's all a very old song.

Nobody passes reliably. It's always contextual and conditional. Transvestigators think Margot Robbie is a brick. Is there a point to Margot Robbie's womanhood? Should she abandon it? And then what? the zendaya thing isnt even a new phenomenon by any means!! the article mentions margot robbie wearing the taj mahal diamond as well, and in addition to that i also want to remind people that diljit dosanjh's request to wear the patiala necklace for the 2025 met gala was denied by cartier because they said it was in a museum and could not be loaned. however they had no issues at all loaning it to emma chamberlain, a white woman, for the 2022 met gala, while they turned down the request of a punjabi man who wanted it to honor his heritage.

this behavior is nothing new. the global south and everything in it - the people, the culture, our heritage - is seen as nothing more than a decoration or commodity to colonizers. i don't even need to bring up the koh i noor or the entire british museum; these examples are recent and egregious enough on their own.

of course this is not to imply that any of the people involved here - zendaya, margot robbie, or emma chamberlain - had any sort of malicious intentions. but the ignorance is just as bad in my opinion. the ignorance is just as harmful, if not more. because it means we are not even an afterthought. it means that the real people and histories and heritages of the global south do not even register when these people are putting together looks for their movie premiers and met gala appearances. everything is just reduced down to a shiny piece of jewelry whose history they need not bother with. it's just a continued reminder of the way colonization affects us all even long after independence, of how barely-healed wounds keep being reopened even decades later. even now, we are being denied connections to our histories and heritages while they are freely being given out to those that have nothing to do with it and don't care for it. and i'm sick of it.

On the one hand the proliferation of the murder hotel myth is a little unconscionable and obfuscates that HH Holmes wasn’t a movie psychopath he killed people to steal their identities and rob them. On the other hand the idea of a murder hotel is so much fun.

okay so this is actually exactly what i'm talking about. number one it is well documented that tabloids at the time fully invented the idea of the murder hotel in order to move papers. number two is that making Holmes (not even his real name) some paragon of evil obfuscates what he actually did- scam and kill a lot of vulnerable women for money. He was a bog standard con man and misogynist and i'm tired of giving him more credit than that.

Say that!!! It bothers me so much that that’s still the main narrative around him. Holmes arguable wasn’t even a serial killer. He also lied repeatedly post-arrest, including in his confessions, where he claimed to have killed people who were still alive using methods that he didn’t use. He WANTED to be remembered this way and it sucks that he got what he wanted.

His main crime was fraud. The people he’s confirmed or presumed to have murdered fell into two categories: women he was in a romantic relationship with who’d lost interest in him (or possibly had gotten pregnant and fallen victim to a botched abortion by Holmes), and people who’s death Holmes directly profited from. He convinced multiple people to sign over deeds or make him a benefactor of their life insurance policy or something along those lines, and at least one of his victims was one of his creditors.

His ‘hotel’ was unfinished, and there wasn’t any gas rooms or booby traps or anything like that. There WAS a few ‘secret’ rooms but they were used to store furniture and stuff that he wanted to hide from creditors, because again, he was primarily a con artist. The majority of his victims were women who he manipulated, illegally married (he was a serial bigamist for that reason) or out right murdered in order to access more money. He wasn’t some twisted evil genius, just a guy who was willing to manipulate and murder for money.

The problem is that people will always prefer the sensational story over the real one. I wonder if that could be applied to anything in particular these days.
