Sebastian nodded. He could certainly understand that. Halloween started in August and Christmas started the moment Halloween ended. Thanksgiving was completely glossed over. “I tend…to hum Christmas songs, in July and then… not deal with them until December 20th at the earliest.” 

“July then the 20th? That’s pretty late. You only give yourself five days to enjoy Christmas time?” She gave him a disbelieving look. “You’ve gotta do at least twenty days. Time to put up decorations, go skatin’, christmas shopping, watch all the movies and tv specials... what can you even do in just five days?”

“…that’s not a bad idea. Come with me. We’ll go there and find me a boyfriend.” Marlene laughed, taking Eleanor by the hand. “Okay, so what should be the charges? Armed Robbery? Arson? Murder?” She whispered the last part while pretending to look around to see anyone who might be listening. Laughing again, she led her friend to the diner. “Let’s get breakfast. I know it’s noon but hear me out. Pancakes should be an all-day meal.”

“I was thnkin’ just a DUI or unpaid tickets. But if you wanna go that route, then your mama will definitely want you to be single again.” El shook her head, smiling light at the image that conjured up for her. “You know,  I’m not gonna disagree with you on pancakes bein’ an all day meal. We should get breakfast for sure.”

“Oh, no. I just can’t get into it.” Eleanor shook her head. “It’s way too early for me. Christmas starts the day after Thanksgivin’ in my family. Christmas movies and music any time before just aint allowed.” @frostfordstart​

There was absolutely no doubt in her mind that this was a bad idea, though of course she didn’t let that stop her, Sadie had hardly ever paid attention to that conscience of hers and she wasn’t about to start now. No. Especially not when she was in middle of spying on Colin Tucker and the girl he was checking out prophylactics with. She wasn’t even cute and if it wasn’t for the fact that she didn’t want to get caught as she ducked behind the display of nylon panty hose and peered over the side of the end cap at Dixie Drug, she might have stomped her foot. She watched as he put her arm around her and grabbed a box that she knew damn well he had no right grabbing, it was where it went wrong, she half snickered half scoffed at the audacity of it all and both their heads turned, causing her to duck and scuttle backwards as quickly as possible. She shuffled her feet as quietly as she could without looking behind her, only to collide with someone behind her. She yelped, covered her mouth to keep from being discovered and then toppled over. “Where on Earth did you come from,” she hissed from the ground, not helping herself at all. “You know most people say excuse me. This is the South– where are your manners?” 

Eleanor was fully absorbed in reading an email from a parent when some one crashed into her. She had gone to Dixie Drug to pick up a few last minute Halloween items for her students and candy for her parents, (her father had forgotten), and the email had taken her by surprise. Seeing the other woman on the floor threw her for a loop, but she was quick to put her phone and basket aside to help her. “I’m sorry. I souldn’t’a been walkin’ and readin’. Are you alright?”

Danny shook his head as he walked away toward her kitchen. He grabbed a glass so poorly the first time that it almost slipped and fell to the floor but at the last second he caught it, just before it had a chance to smash. A few steady breaths and he’d composed himself enough to move to the tap and fill the glass with water. Then he headed back to the crying woman and sank down beside her, placing the cool glass on the table in front of them. He didn’t know what he had expected to walk in to when it came to them but this…this was horrific. It hurt. A lot. He didn’t know what she needed so he just scooted closer and did what he knew what to do: hold her. Even if he was the cause of some of her troubles.

She leaned into him easily, staying tucked into his side until her tears dried up a little while later. Her eyes were red and puffy; her entire face felt like it had swollen up. A headache that she knew wouldn’t go for a while was only getting worse at the back of her head. Eleanor would have loved to have stayed right where she was for the rest of the night, but he had one arm in a cast and she was starting to remember why she was avoiding him again. Sitting up, she sighed and pushed her hair away from her face. “What are we going to do?”

Eleanor was broken. Danny was sure of it. Despite all the stuff that she had admitted to him, there was nothing right about the current state she was in. She was distraught and plagued by something that wasn’t going to stop until it ate her alive. The drinking that had almost led to something Danny didn’t want to think about and the tear…oh fuck the tears were breaking his heart. “Please, El…don’t apologise.” He told her in a whisper before calling for Arbor who began to trot obediently as he decided their best place to go was home. El’s home. “We’re gonna get you to yours.” He breathed before securing his arm around her and walking with intention. Once they reached her small home, he instructed Arbor to lay down on the grass and fed him a pile of treats from his pocket. Then he ushered Eleanor inside and took her straight to the sofa. “I’m getting you water.”

Eleanor followed him quietly, allowing him to lead her. She didn’t know whether to be grateful or mortified that he was there helping her. When they got to her home she let him put her on the couch and just listened to him say he’d get her water. Nodding, she sat forward to try an and calm some more. She was such a mess. There was so much already happening in her life and what was happening with Danny was the icing on the cake-- way more icing than any cake needed. She was so sick of crying. The worst part was feeling like there was no fixing any of it when she knew better. It was going to be okay, but it was so hard to focus on that simple fact.

Bad Ideas | Eleanor & Andi

The brush off didn’t really surprise her. Andi wasn’t a drunk person’s usual idea of a good time since she usually cut them off and sent them on their way. Sometimes she even dragged them into the car and drove them home herself. Tonight she wasn’t here for that thought and she wasn’t in the mood to be treated like crap. “I’ll have whatever she’s having,” Andromeda called to the bartender as they moved about the bar. Glancing over at Eleanor she considered her for a moment. “I’m not here as a narc. And you don’t have to talk about anything you don’t wanna but I wouldn’t mind having a drink with you as long as you aren’t too bothered by me,” she explained, waiting to see if her attempt would work. She truly did need a drink and drinking alone felt horrible so why couldn’t they sit together and do so? Even if it was in silence at least there would be someone there.

She turned to look at her, some what surprised by what she said. “I’d never call you a narc.” Eleanor said softly. It was true, she wouldn’t. Her best friend was a cop and she was a teacher... and a sunday school teacher on top of that. She’d been told many times in school not to be a narc, and such a goodie-goodie, half the time by her own sister. “I just don’t want to talk about Danny. I really don’t.” Avoiding her friend wasn’t enough. She needed to do everything she could not to even let him enter her mind.

Okay, this was definitely not what he wanted to happen. It wasn’t a hugely bad thing because at least they were talking but the face she made broke him. “El….” He breathed then shook his head as tears began to roll down her face. He did what he knew was natural and wrapped his good arm around her and pulled her close. “Eleanor…this is not your fault. You cannot control these things. God…” He knew how big of a part of her life religious was. “God is forgiving. You know he is and you have done so much good in your life.” He looked at her, his eyes firm. “C’mon, I’m taking you home. Arbor will lead the way…”

There was so much she needed and wanted to say to him, but she couldn’t get herself to. He was right, but he was also wrong. She wanted to tell him what had happened would never go away, never change. What was done was done. Instead she found herself going with him, unable to protest. Eleanor cried softly, hoping no one would see them but knowing full well some one would see them. All she wanted was to go back to three weeks ago, before she told him the truth, before she got drunk and dragged Cain into her life and into a fight with Danny. “I’m s-sorry.” She finally managed, sniffing.

A wave of relief washed over him when she turned but at the same time it hurt just to see her face. Her eyes. She was strikingly beautiful and always had been but right then, it sent a pang through his chest to know that he could never have kept her. He never would keep her. He wouldn’t. “Yes you do…” He breathed as he moved a little closer. “I’m not asking for anything crazy, El…” He took in a shaky breath. “I’m asking for you…back in my life because it kills me when we don’t talk. It kills me to know I did what I did and made you feel how you feel.”

All she could do was shake her head at him. He didn’t understand. “No, no. Danny, this is my fault. Everything happened because of me- because I lied to you, and because Cain had to save me that night... None of this would have happened if I wasn’t so awful. This is punishment. God’s not going to forgive me for this and you shouldn’t either.” She was finally crying. Eleanor believe with all of her being what she was saying to him. It hurt like hell.

Danny felt terrible. For the past few days his mood had been increasing but now it was just low again. He’d drank himself to sleep that night after they’d fought because everything had been too much. Eleanor. Andi. The Cain thing. And now it was all coming back. “El…” He whispered. If he didn’t act now then he never would and she could walk out of his life forever. That was quite the opposite of what he wanted. “El!” He said a bit louder then jogged after her. He leant out to grab her wrist then yanked his hand back, knowing he didn’t have the right to touch her. “Don’t walk away….”

Eleanor came to a stop, turning around to look at him. Her heart ached for what she had done to him. All of this was because of her and he looked so hurt... “I don’t know what else to do.” She shook her head. There was a weight on her chest and she knew she wanted to cry again. “I don’t know how to talk to you Danny, I don’t know how to do this.” It was hot outside, yet she had her arms wrapped around herself-- like she thought she could stop herself from spilling her guts to him.
