Local Bookstores Have A New Weapon In The Fight With Amazon

In the book industry, Amazon is Goliath, the giant who overshadows everyone else. But there’s a new David on the scene, Bookshop.org.

It doesn’t expect to topple the giant, but it has launched a weapon that could make Amazon’s shadow a little smaller, and help local bookstores fight back.

Bookshop.org, a website that went live at the end of January and is still in beta mode, is designed to be an alternative to Amazon, and to generate income for independent bookstores. And, perhaps more importantly, it seeks to give book reviewers, bloggers and publications who rely on affiliate income from “Buy now” links to Amazon a different option.

Profit from books sold through Bookshop will be split three ways, with 10% of the sale price going into a pool that will be divided among participating bookstores, 10% going to the publication that triggered the sale by linking to Bookshop.org, and 10% going to Bookshop.org to support its operations.

with every purchase, they tell you how much you’re putting toward independent booksellers, which is fun and cute:

it’s also amazing for authors! i’ve been asked a couple times about the best way to support my books. this site is now the answer. it reports sales figures to the NYT and Bookscan, a type of tracking that helps authors hit bestseller lists. and even better, authors can set up affiliate pages, and if you buy through those pages, we get an additional 10 percent of each sale on top of royalties. this is a massive deal!!!

for reference, many royalty rates are in the 6-8 percent range. so if you buy through Bookshop author affiliate pages, authors get more than twice as much from sales of their books, with no additional cost to you.

the site is still in beta, but it also has a fun interface where you can make book lists for favorites or recommendations, sort of like goodreads (except better, because goodreads is owned by amazon).

Listen up my District 1 folks from Louisiana! My young folks, the last day to register to vote online in Louisiana is Oct 16th! District 1 is 40% Republican, yet Steve Scalise has always won with over 66% which shows most registered Dems are not active voters. We need to fix that. Early Voting starts Oct 25th if you can’t make it for Nov 6th!

Not overly fluffy but with a happy ending. (Yep, despite what you might think in between.)

This starts at the motel in TwotL, so there is original dialogue here, reinterpreting the scenes we were given. The story segues into pure fiction after the fall.

There are lots of turns and not everything is as it may seem at first.

From Baptism:

It takes an indistinct amount of time to get ‘back down to earth‘ as it were. Will is vaguely aware that there is a cramp in his legs, the fingers of his right hand hurt where Hannibal has gripped him too tightly, he is a mess, he hurts between his legs in places he cannot yet define properly and Hannibal - Hannibal is lying on top of him, making it hard to breathe, silently crying into Will’s neck. Will feels the best he can remember.

He carefully dislodges his left arm from Hannibal’s neck, dragging his fingers through the greying hair, petting. His legs drop and he winces, which seems to bring Hannibal back to himself. He raises his head, eyes bloodshot, his voice gravelly. “Will, I… I apologize.“

Will shakes his head slowly and places the fingers of his left hand against Hannibal’s lips. His gaze catches on the ring that Molly placed there and he realizes with a start that it has no place here in this bed. He feels more than sees Hannibal withdraw and quickly shakes his head again trying to placate and communicate his thoughts as clear as possible. “Take it off for me.“

Hannibal freezes above him. The look he levels at him does its best to make Will hard again but he really isn’t that young anymore. Will swallows. Hannibal slowly drags his right hand up at the side of Will‘s body, making him shiver. When he reaches his chest he follows his arm up until he reaches the hand that’s still raised between them. Slowly, very slowly Hannibal starts to push the ring off Will’s finger with his messy hand, never breaking his gaze. Hannibal encloses it in his hand when it’s off and carefully puts it on the nightstand at the other side of the bed. “What about it now?“

Hannibal’s voice is rough and Will knows that the answer he has isn’t what the question was about, but it is the only one he has to give. He tries to say it lightly, keeping his voice low. “Well, you took it from me. So, if we make this work, you’ll have to go and replace it.“

Something breaks in Hannibal’s gaze. There is light and darkness seeping into it in equal measure and it thrills Will to no end to see it. Hannibal’s voice is the roughest he has ever heard it, the accent strong. “I will not let you go, now.“

Will smiles. To everyone else, this would have been a threat. To Will, it’s the conclusion of a courtship that’s lasted six years. He’s been caught, and now he’s free. “Where do we go from here?“

Hannibal nuzzles into the Will’s neck, his words breathed onto sweaty skin. “How about we pay a visit to an old friend?“

Hello Fannibal Family!

There has been something in my for a few month about saving Hannibal! I was thinking of starting a petition for saving it, but I was told by one of the fellow Fannibals that there is already a petition for saving Hannibal. I saw the petition and I signed it myself, but the petition made no change even after months.

I am aware of the fact that that many Fannibals are still sharing that petition, but I’m afraid if we EVEN reach the goal, we won’t be heard (because now the petition is too old for being noticed). And we don’t want that, do we?

Now, we have won almost EVERY POLL in the last three years and we have waited, we have have written, we have made art, and WE KEPT THE FANDOM ALIVE. We became A FAMILY and we kept it ALIVE.

I am so proud of us you can’t even believe it, that’s why I think we deserve better after THREE YEARS.

This year, many shows have been cancelled and again, saved. So why not this year won’t be the year that our show becomes the saved one?

I’m sure we all have our reasons for loving Hannibal and sticking to the fandom and not not leaving it.

You wanna hear my reason? Representation. Representation of LGBTQ+ people without entirely focusing the entire show on them. (I mean, don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with that.)

The way Bryan Fuller showed it, it was something else, something new. It was so casual, like it doesn’t matter that there are two MEN IN LOVE, it doesn’t matter that they are MEN, it matters that they are IN LOVE, and that’s one hell of a representation.

I will always thank Bryan Fuller for it. Believe it or not, it made me have a better understanding of sexuality and love, thank you for that.

I talked so much about myself, but I think it was necessary. I will end it here.

Now, I think, although we have been alive regarding the fact that Hannibal was cancelled, we need to raise our voice again and make ourselves heard.

So, in conclusion, I think we need a new petition, and we need a good amount of signs in a short time if we wanna get noticed and heard. THAT IS IMPORTANT.

I made a new petition because we deserve better, the representation matters, and I want to ask ALL THE FANNIBALS, THE FANNIBAL FAMILY, to share this and make us heard.

I would recommend if you’re also on Twitter, Tweet this to Netflix, because Netflix is the network that is most likely would pick up the show. But no pressures, feel free if you want to Tweet it to another networks too.

It’s time to go back to our roots, the first big Hannibal campaign from season 1 was a business card mailing campaign, sent to NBC to implore them to continue making the show! (Yes, we had to fight for Hannibal to return that early!)

It’s super simple…

Print out the business cards - there are two different designs, they’re designed to be as print friendly as possible (black and white and low on ink usage)

You can add your own twist if you want, I’ve mounted them on card before, written bits and bobs on them, even blood splattered them (with ink!)

Package them up and send a few to Netflix, Amazon, Starz and Hulu (their US offices are best as that is where things will begin, addresses are below the cut.)

SIGNAL BOOST THIS POST! We need numbers to do this and it be effective. Sometimes seeing the physical effects of a fan campaign is good for the psyche!
