I had this saved for 3 years in my drafts

Sometimes I don't much care for humans. They are silly, selfish creatures who care only for their own pleasure. Once in a while they will step outside their narrow mindedness and notice another of their kind in need. It isn't too often that something like this occurs. This behavior can be honed, but only by those who pursue it. A selfless human is a rare thing indeed; a dying breed. I'm glad to have met a few. The rest seem to march like lemmings to the sea. Before you go thinking yourself among the gifted few, consider this: have you ever willingly helped someone who isn't your own blood relative, coworker, or friend? And no, blindly throwing money at a charity isn't what I'm talking about either. The kind of compassion that I'm referring to is that for a stranger in need. So many studies have been conducted around human compassion. In reality, humans fail at being good Samaritans. How many times have you passed a person hiking down the highway, gas can in hand, because you had some place to be or just didn't want the hassle? Can you honestly remember a time in which you looked for someone in need of help? I've been the fortunate recipient of compassion from humans who cast aside their daily rush to stop and help me and for that I'm forever grateful. I've tried to pay that forward over the years. I've tried very hard to stop asking "why me?" when things go wrong because why not me? Sometimes we need setbacks to humble us so that we set aside our pride and ask for help. The problem is that help very rarely makes itself available to those in need so we as a society need to step it up. The smallest good deed can make the biggest impact on someone's life. I challenge anyone who reads this to cast aside their social status for a few minutes each day to offer help to someone who seems to be struggling, even if you do something as simple as have a friendly conversation with someone who looks like they're feeling down. I guarantee you'll feel better about yourself and that person you helped will have a new outlook.
