I’ve mentioned I was in the Fools Guild at a large ren faire for a couple of years – the way they all lie down at the end reminds me of a bit we used to do called Queen’s Messenger.

We’d group up, sound off numbers, and disperse into the crowd. Number 1 would select our target, and run up to them yelling “a message! I bring a message from the queen! an important message! she says–” and then number 1 would die, rather theatrically, at their feet. By the time they were dead, number two was already running up yelling “a message!” repeat, number three, number four etc. We usually had two number fives to arrive at the same time and die arguing over who would give the message, to break it up a little.

Now, sometimes the target would stay there, and develop a large pile of dead bodies at their feet. Sometimes they would walk away and create a long string of dead bodies. Either way, when the last person ran up, they would start in “a message! an important message from the queen! She says to never forget.. no. she says to always remember… wait. She says. Uh. She. Hmm. I forgot the message!” at which point the entire group of dead fools would leap to our feet and yell in unison “you forgot?!?!?!” and then we’d all angrily chase the forgetful fool as they sprinted away.

anyway, could be cool to try at a convention if you wind up in a group like these spidermen, or a bunch of x-men could have a message from charles xavier or whatever.

I have - quite unintentionally - contributed to this phenomenon.

I was waking up from surgery in the post-op observation room, where they kept people before sending them off to the ICU. The nurse was talking to me as I was semi-awake, telling me that as soon as it was ready, I would be sent to room 2008.

I did not hear the word “room”.

I started trying to sit up and get out of bed (entirely unsuccessfully), shouting (mumbling forcefully), “He’s not president yet! I have to warn everyone!”

Most shows with overpowered supernatural characters always try to come up with elaborate excuses to explain why the characters can’t just magic themselves out of every situation. Good Omens doesn’t really do that, but you don’t really question it because you completely buy that these morons are so unequivocally incompetent that they straight up forget that they have the powers of fucking demigods. They’re like high-level d&d characters who only use the same three moves and have completely forgotten about the 73 magic items sitting in their inventory.

I cannot express the effect this post had on me. I read it aloud to my roommate and she burst into helpless laughter because it had never occurred to her that Crowley could do anything to get to Tadfield but drive the Bentley. It absolutely never had occurred to me, either. We both have been reading, rereading, and loving this book for about a decade now.

Hey if you're an American and have a moment, consider calling your representatives to urge them to support the post office. The post office receives NO federal funding and is currently struggling because of COVID-19. If it doesn't receive aid it is likely to go under.

The Post Office is incredibly important for rural people (many of whom are indigenous people) because the private shipping companies often cannot deliver to them, or the cost to do so is extreme. The Post Office is vital then for things like voting by mail, medication deliveries and the like and helps keep things affordable for small businesses.

To urge your representatives to support the post office and give them aid, call

This will take you to the capital switchboard. Ask to speak to a senator for your state. Then leave a message with either the clerk or the answering machine saying you urge your senator to support giving aid to the Post Office during the pandemic.

Another thing you can do to support the post office is to just buy stamps! Stamps are good forever, and are a very affordable way to send mail. They even have collectable stamps if pretty stickers are more your style. The Post Office is a VITAL service and trust me, you WILL notice if it goes away or is privatized.
