Version of Me

The version I used to be— he wasn’t perfect, but at least he moved. At least he had some kind of pulse, some stupid hope in his chest that didn’t care how many times it got kicked in.

Now I just sit here. Caged, but not locked in. The key’s right there, but even freedom feels exhausting.

I tell myself I’ve grown, but all I’ve done is learn how to flinch quieter. I used to scream. Now I just sink. I’ve become a master at convincing myself I’m just tired, when really, I’m afraid. Afraid that stepping out means failing again. Afraid that maybe this is all there is left of me.

And that other version of me—the one I left behind? He’s not heroic. He’s reckless. But he was alive. I hated his mess, but I envy how loud his heart beat before the silence set in.

What scares me most isn’t losing him. It’s knowing I might already be something worse. This numb, stagnant shell that calls itself "safer" but never feels like home.
