I need tiktokers to understand that ao3 has been home for the freaks (affectionate) ever since the day it was created. the entire site was created because “dark and fucked up fics” were banned and removed from other platforms, so us freaks came together and created a site for other freaks — a site where nothing is censored, a site with no algorithm, no capitalism, no ads, and again, absolutely no censorship.

this has been our house for decades. you newbies don’t come into our house and tell us how to arrange our furniture. either be nice and respect our house, or leave and build your own house elsewhere.

Yes. Some variety, please! The character deserves to be appreciated in other ways. No more turning Harry into a tool to prop up an image that even Voldemort himself couldn't live up to in canon.

Yeah, ha, it's so so so funny how both Sirius and Draco Malfoy are characterized depending on their romantic relationships. When Sirius is with Lupin, he's often hyper-feminized and helpless, but when you stick him with Hermione (and to some extent, Harry), he turns into a hyper-masculine, smells-like-leather-and-whiskey, calls-you-demeaning-pet-names type jerk. Same thing with Draco. In Drarry, he's often ultra feminine and in Dramione, he's this jacked, "mysterious" asshole and highly reminiscent of Romantasy love interests.

I don't mind exploration of gender and gender identity as long as the character holds on to their key character traits and nuances, but Christ! Why we gotta do this, folks. Why does every couple gotta be Alpha Male and Helpless and/or Sexualized Girl.

adding onto this, in tomarrymort, even when Harry is written as "badass" he's written as a "girl badasss", you know what i mean? like he's "badass" in a feminine way, like he sasses back but he almost never does anything that could seriously challenge the top he's paired with. he has "cool" moments and then goes right back to being a delicate defenceless waif the rest of the time. he manages the tops emotions like a cool girl. these are not traits he has in canon so it just reads like a self-insert fantasy.

it's fine to write him this way of course, but when so much of the fanfic/art depicts him like this, people pretty much forget the canon character and begin to un-ironically believe/argue the canon harry potter is like this. and that's where i object.

that is not harry potter.

if people would own their self-insert fantasies, this wouldn't be an issue. but if you tell me your fic has canon harry potter and i click to read it, only to find damsel-too demure- to-do-anything-against his assigned superior-manly-dom-top, and then the majority of fics are like this, then you can understand why that would result in frustration right?
