Three fanfiction experts give their insight into the the social, collaborative, imaginative community of writers and stories.

I was recently on the radio to talk about fanfiction (and the growing connection to pro romance) with the brilliant @annejamison and @gyzym, and I'm so pleased with how this conversation turned out! It's rare that an ostensibly "fic 101 conversation" can get into this level of nuance (a testament to both the interviewees and the interviewer and her producer, who were very thoughtful). And all in under half an hour!

I don't wanna @ anyone because I understand how fast things seem to move in today's landscape of streaming shows dropping entire seasons in one day, and networks pumping out new series constantly to try to attract more subscribers with no intent to actually maintain those shows over time but I just saw someone self-deprecatingly lament that they are still thinking about a show that ended almost a year ago, making fan art and playlists for it, and I want to be very clear:

you can still create fanworks when it comes to old media!! PLEASE do!! there are always going to be new fans who will appreciate it, and veteran fans who are dying for new content and new perspectives. also, less than a year is NOTHING. the original Star Trek series was on TV six decades ago and there are still people losing their minds over it, writing stories and reblogging gifsets daily, and that's only one example.

a fandom lasts as long as there are people who love a thing, even if it's only a handful of people. love what you love and write and draw and make gifs and playlists about it!

It will expertly prepare you to blend in with the locals, and ensure the best chance of success on your upcoming assignment.

At this point, you will have access to our debriefing documents, and be able to begin transferring small amounts of intel to the system.

After you have proven yourself by not abandoning the project in the first 4 hours, you will be ready for the final, and most vital part of the mission: preparing to receive your assignment.

Before you can be given this valuable piece of information, you must ensure that you have a proper place to hold it.  The best way to do this is set up your “User Page”. Not only will this provide a secure environment for your assignment, but it will also assist with proving your identity should anyone think to question you.

She’s in a floaty, pastel colored dress—blush or mint or lavender, he doesn’t really notice—and she’s dancing with Nott, spinning around in a tight, gracefully calculated circle, her hair a gleaming wave of perfectly smooth, meticulously styled cornsilk; and she has freckles, maybe, and blue eyes, no green eyes, and she’s slender in a way that looks like it takes effort to maintain, her cheeks the slightest bit too sharp, her ankles the slightest bit too flimsy; and she’s giggling conspiratorially with Parkinson over by the punch bowl and she’s whispering encouragingly to Bulstrode out in the gardens and she’s smiling shyly, no, slyly at one of the older boys from Beauxbatons, letting him kiss her hand and tuck a winter white rose behind her ear, and Harry’s never spoken to Daphne Greengrass before, has never even thought of speaking to Daphne Greengrass before, but—

“Oh,” she says, suddenly, catching his eye with a curious, somewhat bemused tilt of her chin. Her voice is slower and quieter and higher-pitched than he’d expected it to be. “Harry Potter. Did you need something?”

The word strikes him as inadequate, almost offensively underwhelming, but he isn’t sure if there is a word for how carefully—hesitantly—radiantly she fits beside him; because there’s the blurry, strawberry-pink line of a pillow crease on her face, already beginning to fade, and long, curling tendrils of hair escaping the sloppy, oddly complicated looking braid she has hooked over her shoulder, and the sunny yellow polish on her nails is flaky around the edges, peeling off in haphazard little slivers, and she’s licking pastry icing off her lips, the tip of her tongue delving in and out of the microscopic, crescent moon chip in her front tooth, and Harry’s fallen in love before, and he’s fallen out of love before, and he’s lived through what he assumes is a fairly average number of breakups and regrets and one-night stands and relationships that were fundamentally impermanent, always, easy enough to ignore, if he wanted to, easy enough to erase, if he needed to, but—
