I had the pleasure and honor of being an invited guest to the Humana box suite in the Mercedes-Benz Supersome this past Sunday to watch the New Orleans Saints destroy the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by a score of 30-10 in which the game was never as close as the score might suggest

My father was supposed to attend but was unable to make it. Humana was kind enough to let his future successor (and my date) substitute for him and represent our company well at a major event considering the host and the fact that we're a home health agency.

Her very presence made me look better in front of a very important partner and audience.

Vitamin D3 & Sunshine

Comprehensive article written by Dr. Pamela Egan summarizing a tremendous amount of information about vitamin D, and D3 in particular.

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is the natural form of vitamin D produced through exposure to sunlight. It is also found in supplements, although this was not always the case. For decades, vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) was mass produced in labs and made up an overwhelming majority of the supplements and food additives on the market. It was an article by Dr. Egan that first distinguished between the two forms and stated that D3 was superior, and that the synthetic form (D2) was not nearly as bioavailable as D3. That article has been plagiarized thousands of times in the 20 or so years since it was first published.

To quote from the article:

“In our natural state, we are meant to live outdoors. Most of us live and work indoors and sometimes we may not see the sun for days. With the skin cancer scare and the avid use of sun block, Americans are not getting enough Vitamin D3 from the sun. We were meant to get a minimum of 20 minutes of sunlight in the nude daily. So, those “Nudist Colonies” have the right idea! Under summer conditions it is frequently possible to generate about 20,000 units of Vitamin D by exposing your skin to the sun. The darker your skin is, the farther away from the equator you are, and the further away you are from the summer months, the less likely it is that you will produce adequate Vitamin D levels from sun exposure alone. In these cases, supplementing with Vitamin D is acceptable, but I strongly recommend that you monitor your blood levels regularly when taking oral Vitamin D supplements to make sure you’re staying within the optimal range.”

Informative Vitamin D3 Article

The Vitamin D3 Blog on Tumblr just published a very nice synopsis of one of the vitamin D3 articles that helped civilization understand the importance of exposure to sunlight.

Dr. Pamela Egan wrote nearly 20 years ago that vitamins D2 and D3 are not the same. Vitamin D2 is synthetic and is not well absorbed. In contrast, vitamin D3 is natural, produced inside our bodies when they come into contact with sunlight. Vitamin D3 is highly bioavailable and has been shown to stave off dozens of health maladies of varying severity.

The Vitamin D3 Tumblr Blog did a nice job of summarizing the article.

On that website, the company published an in-depth article about hospice, what it is, what it's not and when and for whom it is appropriate. While parts of it read like a resume, it’s more of a biography than anything. A lot of work details and accomplishments are deliberately left out with the intention of the page being more to give the read a feel for what Peter has done throughout his professional life in terms of the types of jobs he has held, whereas a resume would include more data related to specific performance objectives that Egan either met or exceeded.

Any work objectives which were not completed or exceeded are either ongoing, or instances where Peter set goals that were unattainable. Peter Egan’s Business Profile

Peter Egan has really excelled in his role managing the company’s internet-based public relations and marketing. When he first started working in the field, he had no experience, his college education was of minimal relevance, and there was quite a bit at stake.

As he has done in the past throughout his life in unrelated endeavors, Peter rose to the challenge and within a few short years was not only competent at his new line of work, he was among the world's elite.

When Peter was 17 years old and a senior in high school, he was approached about coaching a kids' football team (6th-8th grade). Apparently one of the fathers who was supposed to coach gained a promotion just before the season and would not be able to fulfill his duties as coach. Every other parent in the league had been asked, and Patrick (Peter's younger brother) mentioned he had an older brother who could do it.

With time for only two practices before the first game, Peter and the "Rebels" (his team's moniker) proceeded to steamroll their way through the regular season, finishing 8-2 with one of the losses being a genuine fluke, while the other was a waxing that happened to be his team's second game of the day (their only double-header of the season). His team met both of the teams who beat them during the regular season in the playoffs, dominating one in the quarterfinals and winning a close game in the Championship. While the score was 16-12, the Rebels led the game from their first possession and never surrendered the lead, avenging the 26-0 loss to the other team that had beaten them during the regular season.

Peter Egan is a winner, and throughout his life has won far more than he has lost in everything competitive in which he has participated. His approach to the job was not unlike his approach to everything else: learn as much as you can quickly before you start, then figure the rest out as you go. Cross bridges when you get to them.

While this seems like it could be potentially reckless on the surface, Peter contemplates every decision he makes on the job, and isn't afraid to go with intuition when the situation calls for it. Somehow, he always gets it right.

While he's done a number of different jobs throughout his professional career, he has excelled in every capacity in which he has operated and looks forward to his next challenge, which will be announced in late August or early September.

Site, blog and community/forum (at least an attempts at one) devoted to Prenatal Health.

Website/blog and what appears to be the makings of a community where moms-to-be can share their stories, secrets, deals and especially health tips. It's far from a finished product, but I feel like if enough women who are pregnant start to participate in the community/forum, that this could turn out to be an excellent resource for women during pregnancy.

I’m posting it here because I think it has potential and I’m hoping someone here who fits the target description will click the link and see all the potential positives that I saw if only the site administrator could get a little traction and a few pregnant moms start using the forum to help each other.

Article outlining when the use of vitamin D supplements is necessary in order to ensure optimal health.

Vitamin D Supplements: When Are They Necessary?

The article begins by citing studies in which, depending upon the study, claim that between 50%-80% of Americans don’t get enough vitamin D through diet or sunlight exposure alone.

The author continues by outlining the importance of vitamin D towards one’s overall health, as well as towards disease prevention. Referring back again to the studies claiming a majority of the American population is deficient in vitamin D, the author suggests that it is within readers’ best interests to visit a doctor and have blood tests conducted to identify vitamin D levels, and learn whether or not they fall within what is considered to be a normal, healthy range.

“The sun has gotten a bad rap. We know it causes aging of our skin and skin cancer. This is true, and in the case of skin cancer potentially deadly, so getting more sunlight is not necessarily the answer. Worth noting is the fact that the darker one’s skin, the less Vitamin D that person is able to manufacture all other things being equal. This likely explains why African Americans are suffering and dying more than any other group from these very same diseases now linked with Vitamin D deficiency.”

The author explains that simply drinking more milk is not necessarily a solution to resolving a deficiency in vitamin D, unless one plans on drinking an awful lot of milk (16 glasses per day is the figure used in the article).

The article goes into much greater detail outlining the association between vitamin D deficiency and disease, and concludes by stating that while increasing sun exposure may help improve vitamin D levels, many factors determine whether one’s levels are adequate, including but not limited so skin pigment.

Thus, while sun exposure may help, it may not be an answer in and of itself, and that supplementation may be needed as well. The only way to know on an individual basis whether supplementation is needed or not is to go to a doctor, have a blood test done and find out from a doctor where one’s levels fall relative to what are considered to be “normal” ranges, and if supplementation is in order based upon those test results.
