I can’t lie vine & early TikTok felt very “poverty as entertainment” and lolcow culture kind of bread this eco system that mirrors street show vaudevillian stuff. Hell I mean the TikTok shop is literally tourist vendor vibes & TikTok lives are filled with fortune tellers. What I’m trying to say is that globally culture has been so hallowed out and people in low income/low foot traffic areas realize they could farm themselves for entertainment purposes. Now it’s been over a decade of this autobiographical performance art the unfashionable do which has made the American suburbs seem like a mental prison more than they ever have. As they are pinned between both this desperate Internet hustle culture and this bizarre bourgeois influencer 2 week trend cycle & have nothing to themselves besides like youth sports/pageantry (also publically broadcasted) or MLMs. This is why I kind of am bored with the taste Olympics of it all because at the of the day I appreciate innovation and excellence in the arts, I think both extremes have evolved to only be good at one niche, and I often dip my toes into “low culture” because there’s more of an emotional reality there. I’m still exposed to what’s going on but I also know how much of a farce keeping up w the jonses can be. I need to know more about like, what true crime doc the CNAs are obsessed with than pretending Charli Xcx is reinventing the wheel w her pastiche of nostalgia & AI esque editorialization of everything
