begins as a third-year medical student ( through his current residency ) looking to enter emergency medicine. he has already proven himself that he can work under high-pressure and even though he's quick-witted around fellow doctors ( and competition ) , his bedside manner seems to surprise those around him for just how gentle and caring the often hard exteriored russian can be.

ilya   had   both   hated   and   loved   his   brother.   he   had   stuck   true   to   his   word   about   not   returning   home   while   making   sure   his   niece   was   well   taken   care   of.   if   there   had   been   one   good   thing   left   in   russia   ,   it   had   been   her.

seeing   sofya   so   much   older   now   ,   the   resemblance   to   his   mother   was   unmistakable   ;   it   almost   left   him   speechless.   it   pained   him   (   but   didn't   surprise   him   )   to   hear   the   lies   his   brother   spewed   about   him   to   his   niece   ,   but   alexei   had   always   been   the   jealous   type.

ilya   nodded   in   agreement.   "   it   is   nicer   here   for   shane   and   i.   maybe   one   day   it   will   be   better   in   russia   ,   but   .   .   .   for   now   ,   we   are   happy.   "   and   happy   to   have   his   niece   here   with   them.

"   i   want   you   to   stay.   "   the   words   come   out   casual   ,   like   he's   asking   hollander   to   grab   him   a   coke   from   the   fridge.   forever   .   for   the   night.   for   an   hour.   rozanov   will   take   anything   if   he'll   just   say   the   word.   he   won't   beg   ,   that   would   be   too   much   for   whatever   this   is   between   them.   and   as   long   as   he   avoids   eye   contact   ,   he   can   continue   believing   that   he   really   doesn't   care   if   he   stays   or   goes in the end ( but he really hopes he'll stay ).
