We don't talk enough about how infuriating it is to read the writings of a colonizer's impression on an indigenous land, as an indigenous person. Reading these writings is crucial to truly understand the colonialist mindset implemented at the time, but having to never gets easier.

As I read the recounts of an orientalist French achitect of his "travels" to a colony, how convenient it was to be in a country where he had all the autonomy and didn't have to follow the oh-so strict rules he had to follow in western countries. One moment, he is marveling at the beauty of the architecture, fascinated by the antique structures. The next, he is calling the very people who built said buildings savages.

I cannot stress enough how much Yue Qingyuan lacks this one thing called self-awareness. Imagine being the closest thing a flawed human can get to an angel on earth and also being 75% made out of self-loathing.

Yue Qingyuan’s acting began very early on, but it only became full-blown after he joined the Cang Qiong Sect. His shizun wanted him to be the perfect Sect Leader for the sect, nothing more and nothing less. His shizun taught him that was his one and only purpose. It stuck. At first, he was going along with it to have better chances at going back for Xiao-Jiu. When he stood, blankly staring at the remains of the Qiu Manor, that was when it truly did become his purpose.

There's a difference, though. The person Yue Qingyuan is — the person he thinks he is pretending to be — is not what his shizun would define as the perfect sect leader. It is what Yue Qingyuan believes is the perfect sect leader. There had been a time when he would have never trusted himself over his shizun's judgment. But Shizun's judgment did not help him get Xiao-Jiu back. It will not help Cang Qiong either. They don't need a firm, ruthless leader. They need a leader who is firm but lenient, decisive but kind. They do not need another Shizun.

One mistake that people around Yue Qingyuan often make with Yue Qingyuan is that they assume that him choosing to wear a certain design, practice a certain hobby, or to use a certain tool, means that he likes or at least prefers that thing. He never corrects them.

What makes Yue Qingyuan’s kindness his most outstanding trait is specifically the fact that he is at the top of the world. It's easy to preach kindness and compassion when you are at the bottom of the food chain; it only truly matters if when actually having the power, you still stand by that kindness and compassion. And he makes that choice every single damn time.

Yue Qingyuan is the type of person who'd give you a chiding lecture about how you should go to people for help and prioritize your health with his hands clasped behind his back. You'd think the hands are clasped for firmness and the seriousness effect but really he's just hiding the fact that he may or may have not accidentally or not accidentally snapped his own wrist and fractured the bone and maybe probably definitely needs medical help and you absolutely cannot know that because no one can.
