Vessel remembers what it felt like to dance; They do not.
genre and tags: Vessel / Sleep & Espera; mild hurt/comfort; daydreaming; Sleep Token is a band but not fully human; a little sad but that's a given; mostly wholesome; Espera are three of the same; very minimal editing
word count: 410w
author's note: Sleep here is mostly referred as she/her but also uses they/them. You'll understand.
Cross-posted to ao3.
His eyes follow the twirling seed as it floats past his bent knees, dancing carefree in the early morning breeze. The feathery dandelion gracefully lands on the ground, where the wind drags it further away from him. It reminds him of the ashes snowing from his favourite tree, of the raining leaves before them.
Once upon a time, he used to sit outside with his legs stretched out, back when the wind tickled his cheeks, and his hands weren’t yet stained.
“What are you thinking of?”
He watched the orange leaf nimbly spiral down to his feet, the way it spun to a secret melody known only by the other falling leaves.
“The leaves. This tree. This place. Everything here seems to breathe music. I’d like to know how that sounds.”
She looked at him amused - he was a curious one, always taking her by surprise with his remarks. She got on her feet and extended a hand to him, beckoning him up.
“What are you doing?”
“WE are going to dance. Come on, join me.”
Another dandelion seed waltzes past him, undulating so slowly he could easily pluck it from the air.
He holds himself instead.
They danced beneath the warm glow of the browning tree for what it felt like an eternity, until the last leaf had at last fallen to the ground. She ignored the stray tear running down his face; he pretended not to notice the way Her eyes burn with hunger.
“Can’t we stay here a little longer? While we’re still whole?”
She smiled.
“What are you thinking of?”
The question pulls him out of his memories; he had forgotten she was sitting beside him. He wonders if she even remembers – if any of Them do.
“Nothing, really. Just getting some fresh air.”
He searches for her eyes beneath the mask, hoping to find more of her beyond the way her lips curve.
“Do you… want to dance with me?”
“Pfff, what?” she laughs in disbelief. “Are you alright, Vessel?”
“What’s so funny?” Another of Them joins the conversation, with a silent request of help with her own hood aimed at her sister.
“This guy wants to dance, apparently.” The two women giggle as they adjust each other’s clothes.
“We’re up in like, fifteen minutes, Ves. Have a little patience.”
He watches the way they merrily chat amongst themselves, oblivious to the memories he carries alone.
“Ah, it was just a joke. I should get back inside.”
author's note: I hope you liked it! My idea was to make Espera a sort of triad fragmentation of Sleep post-Vessel (so after he formally joined Them), but since I want to keep these ficlets short, I'm not too confident if that was apparent or not.
Please keep interacting with this post because when I come to tumblr to procrastinate, this shows up again in my notifications and guilts me into writing again
a Tumblr-exclusive anniversary celebration of the albums Even In Arcadia and Take Me Back To Eden by the Sleep Token collective.
(more info, prompt list, guidelines, and faq bellow):
Starting on the 1st of May, everyone is invited to participate in this event with their own work (or by simply enjoying and sharing all the beautiful creations of your fellow brethren), under the tag #takemaybacktoarcadia <- follow for any updates.
There will be a choice between two prompts related to both albums every other day, for a total of 10 prompted days over the course of 19 days, culminating on the 19th of May, TMBTE's anniversary. This should allow everyone enough time to contribute with something, with the rest of May prompt-free for everyone to catch up!
The main goal is for everyone to have fun and make this Month extra special and Sleep Token focused, given it's EIA's first anniversary (on the 9th of May), and TMBTE's third (!!!).

FAQ
What is this exactly? How did it come about?
I originally came up with the idea to have a Sleep Token fandom event in May, as it is Even In Arcadia's very first anniversary, and the fandom at large is a bit dormant, given the band isn't currently active. That being said, I couldn't have done this without everyone's feedback on this post (and outside)! Yay friendship!
Erm, exqueeze-me sauce, wasn't this an Arcadia event? Why is TMBTE here?
As pointed out in the replies of the post linked above, May also marks the anniversary of TMBTE, the beautiful and wonderful album that brought in a huge part of the fandom, myself included! It'd be a shame to pass this opportunity up!
What type of work can I do? Does it have to be "finished"?
Anything goes! Visual fanart, a gif edit, a music cover, fanfiction, a baked good, a meme, a 3D animation, etc. It can be something as small as a sketch or 100 word drabble, or a fully rendered artwork. The sky's the limit! All you need to do is choose one of the prompts (or do both! your choice!), make your lovely art, post it on Tumblr (you can link it to your Ao3 or Youtube), and tag it as #takemaybacktoarcadia, as well as the main Sleep Token tag, and whatever others necessary.
I only ask for it to be Sleep Token-related (numerals, Espera, crew, crusty god Sleep, Fuckass Ferry). Including OCs is fine, but please no fandom cross-overs (unless it's like, a Bilmuri x ST thing for example, ykwim).
What if I miss the day? What if I can't create anything?
No worries! Participation in all days is not required - do as little or as much as you are able, no pressure! You'll have a day in-between prompts to post your thing (so, Day 1 (1st of May) includes the 2nd of May as well, and so on), and even though the prompts end on the 19th, this is a Month-long event! Catch up as you're able to (even after the month is over - more art is always welcomed here!).
If you can't create anything (or even if you do), you are very VERY encouraged to comment and reblog others' posts. Also not a bad time to bring back some older Sleep Token posts - put them thangs on circulation! Let's really annoy all of our non-ST moots lmaoo
How were the prompts chosen? Why didn't you include xyz?
When I first announced this event, I was preparing myself for every possible scenario, so I got about 5 to 10 prompts for each EIA song, just in case (the plan was always to have 2 per day, like the House vs Host divide). Then TMBTE came on, and I gathered yet another list of words from that album. The final list is the result of me combining keywords/themes that are common to both (eg. blood, dance, twilight), and album-specific ones, all grouped in similar/opposite pairs. I could do this for at least 3 more months lol.
I don't have any questions, I just wanted to say you're so cool and awesome and smart and hot tee-hee ooh mamma 🤭
Why thank you angel 💙 It was a delight preparing this event for us!
For any other inquiries, please reply to this post - someone may have the same question as you, and it saves me the trouble to explain twice! WORSHIP
If you're watching the Artemis ii mission and are loving all the space/lunar terminology, and also perhaps are missing one Mr Vessel Token, BOY do I got a fic for you!
So, I've been struggling a bit to figure out the ending of a short story I'm writing (and this is perfect for one-shots too), and how to plot accordingly (as in, where is this going and how do I get there).
I've been browsing through various writing resources and the like, and I figured I'd share the ones that made the most sense to me. Just in case anyone needs some references too.
(I'd also recommend to take a stroll through these sites - they have plenty of articles and resources on all things writing, including courses if that's your thing)
The Power of Endings (by M. Faber for the National Centre For Writing)
Very short and interesting article about how the ending should match the tone and language of the story, and how what you find most interesting or clever isn't necessarily what's best for the story.
"The appropriateness of an ending, however, is not just about what happens at the end, but how the language conveys those events. The pace and feel of the prose determines how the ending resonates."
How to End a Story (by M. Snaith for The Novelry)
She breaks down the characteristics of a satisfying ending in 4 main points. While I don't necessarily agree with all that (I find what makes a "good" ending to be too subjective and personal to each person), I thought her 2nd point about the plausibility of the ending to be a nice thing to keep in mind.
" We need to be able to look back at the story and know that there were signs all along. (...) To prevent yourself circling around the maze of your manuscript, you must type your way towards the end, even if it’s a wobbly ending that doesn’t quite work. By getting to the final page you’ll be able to look back and see where the strands of your story could best lead."
6 Tips for a Satisfying Short Story Ending (by P. Mountford for Writer's Digest)
A bit of a back-to-basics guide to work out the ending of a short story (the first paragraphs are all about short stories, the difficulty of nailing their ending, and how to get there). Nothing extraordinary, but very useful tips nonetheless, especially of you're stuck and need to look at things from a different angle. Highly recommend.
Concerning the climax and morality of a short story through a contemporary lens:
"In the coda—and not all contemporary stories have a coda, but most do—the writer helps the reader identify meaning without stating it as bluntly as O. Henry did. By leaving the work of interpretation to the reader, the writer allows for variety in how we might interpret the story. With ambiguity, the reader can continue to think about the story."
(This article also touches on the pros and cons of planning a conclusion, with inputs from other writers, which I really liked. It doesn't push for one or another, simply shows you the various routes to get there.)
dear everyone on tumblr who needs to host images elsewhere (e.g. to embed on ao3 etc), please give squidge a go!! it's free, it's nonprofit and it's geared towards fandom so nsfw images won't get deleted!! and please stop using imgur if you can because they blocked the uk rather than acquiesce to the fucking internet safety laws, which I can't really hold against em but it does mean all imgur pictures just show up as big purple boxes now
Not only is Squidge still around, it's expanded and grown! It is still run by the same guy, though now it's a nonprofit with a board and everything, and while they maintain all the old squidge sites as static archives, they have a new multifandom archive using the AO3 code at squidgeworld.org. They also host podfics and fanart.
For those younguns in the crowd, back in the day erotic fanworks--especially slash--was not welcome very many places. Walter was willing to host it, and has been a haven for NSFW fanworks since 1994. The various archives and so on hosted at squidge.org were never very large, compared to lots of other archives, but they were a necessary part of the fannish ecosystem, and I'm really glad that there is now a structure in place to keep the whole system running beyond just "Walter's a great guy willing to donate lots of time and money." Walter is a great guy! but like. it's good to have other people to help out and keep things going in the long run.
Reblog this if you want readers to come into your ask box and ask for the “director’s commentary” on a particular story, section of a story, or set of lines.
Or, send in a ⭐star⭐ to have the author select a section they’ve been dying to talk about!
