Orcas Island, WA: named not for orcas but “Horcasitas” after Juan Vicente de Güemes Pacheco de Padilla y Horcasitas, segundo conde de Revillagigedo. He was a Mexican explorer. From what I can find the island was Lummi territory. Though they don’t speak about indigenous history much, if at all.

I brought this Tim Horton’s donut to my stepfather six years ago. He just found it in a file box still on a plate, lightly wrapped in cellophane completely untouched by mould or rot. WHAT ARE THESE DONUTS MADE OF AND WHY AREN’T WE MAKING EVERYTHING WE LOVE OF THIS INDESTRUCTIBLE MATERIAL
