Characters will make a very nuanced choice that makes sense for their story arc and internal conflict, and audience members will be like "is anyone else going to misconstrue this in the most black and white, bad faith manner possible?"
the issue with growing up in the 2000s and 2010s was like there was this really big push toward "accepting your weirdness" overall but they meant like idk wearing mismatched socks or something not being tangibly beyond the norm in any way shape or form
STAINED GLASS LAMPS ā”Ėāā”ā§ā
I love the kind of tired that comes from a lot of fresh air and a little too much sun
In France if you suffer from hair loss as a teenage girl and cannot afford a real hair wig the school will try and force you to go to class bald. The school will make you buy a chemotherapy turban, you will buy two different so that the school can choose which one they prefer and you will prove that they are chemotherapy turban and not hijab but once you wear it they will change their mind and say it looks too much like a hijab and insist on you going bald or buying a real hair wig that you cannot afford.
If your doctor makes multiple documents confirming that you suffer from alopecia because of stress and the medicine you have to take for your epilepsy and that wearing a bonnet or something is recommended for your mental health as youāre not ready to go out bald in high school as a teenage girl, instead of admitting they are wrong the school will accuse the doctor of lying and report him to the Ordre des MĆ©decins (equivalent of the General Medical council). Your doctor will find himself asking you for a document stating that you are not Muslim in order to defend himself and prove that no he wasnāt colluding with you so you could wear a substitute for hijab.

In France if you are a North African nurse at a public hospital and wear a fabric surgical cap they will try to make you remove it because apparently itās a hidden hijab. They will accuse you of going against secularism and when youāll argue that they are discriminating you by assuming youāre Muslim for a surgical cap on your head they will change their angle and claim that you should wear nothing on your hair because you wear the same surgical cap in multiple bedroom which is unhygienic apparently (which is a bullshit argument cause you wear the same scrub/uniform in different bedrooms as well). They will go as far as claiming that disposable scrub caps (you know the thin papery ones?) are not okay to wear in a hospital even if you change it regularly. And then they will fire you for a lack of hygiene because you wear a surgical cap.

All of that will be done in the name of secularism and womenās right despite having nothing do with either quite the opposite.
The teenage girlās story is also not just about racism and Islamophobia itās also about ableism as the girl is convinced that the real reason the school is trying to push her out is because she had an epilepsy crisis in class and nobody knew what to do and the school nurse was absent. It could have ended badly had her best friend not known what to do to help. Apparently it was bad enough to cancel class for the rest of the day and the teacher was shocked to the point of ending on sick leave.
oh and don't forget that many parts of France mandate by law how much skin women must show in swimsuits, which they claim is about not getting street dirt in public pools but which is disproportionately enforced on Muslim or even just Middle Eastern/North African women
(and of course is also some forced nudity misogynistic bullshit in general, to boot)
we need to bring back the phrase "what business is it of yours" in a big way i'm serious
i know you can just say "none of your business" but phrasing it as a question with a jarringly formal tone is the ideal way to shoot an overfamiliar unwelcome overture dead in its tracks and force the person making it to confront the boundaries they're taking for granted + it would really piss people off which is funny
weāre about 60 days away from 2013 just think about that for a sec
quanto mi odio quanto mi odio quanto mi odio quanto mi odio quanto mi odio quanto mi odio quanto mi odio quanto mi odio quanto mi odio quanto mi odio quanto mi odio quanto mi odio
Look y'all, this reveal means so much to me. So many times in movies these days there are big reveals for the audienceās benefit that mean absolutely nothing in the context of the story or to the characters in it. Iām talking the Thanos cameo in the Avengersā stinger, Iām talking Benedict CumberKhan in Star Trek, Iām talking about every hackneyed āThis character is actually this other characterā when in universe nobody knows nor cares about their true identity.
But here? This reveal? This is a Big Reveal for us, Peter B Parker, and Miles, all on different levels. We and Peter both know Doc Ock is a portly dude, not a woman. We know the name Octavius⦠Otto Octavius. But when she says her name is Olivia Octavius weāre clued in to the fact that Doctor Octopus is a woman in this universe. And she has Peter captive.
Miles, if he was paying attention in science class earlier in the movie, would have known her name was Olivia Octavius, but that doesnāt mean anything to him, why would it? Liv has apparently been very good about keeping her supervillainy a secret. Sheās in educational videos shown in high-schools. So to Miles, the reveal here is this scientist lady, who he knew enough about to know was the head scientist at Alchemax, is a supervillain. He gets the reveal a second or two after Peter.
And the movie? It was dropping hints the entire time, confident in our expectations blinding is to the truth. Oliviaās name was partially visible when Miles got to science class. Her glasses are octagonal. The lights in her lab are octagonal. We know sheās working with the Kingpin. Why wouldnāt she be a supervillain? Because sheās hot? Hell, Peter even says he needs to reexamine his internal biases. Maybe he was telling us that we should too.
Itās a reveal for us, and for our heroes. It means something, both in-universe and out. And that makes it infinitely better than other similar reveals.
Iām not reading all that I want her to dissect me
