Happy Workers’ Day! My great-grandmother started working at a woollen mill when she was eleven. She was so small they had to find an apple box for her to stand on. When she was nineteen, married and pregnant, she went on strike alongside her mother and the other workers to protest working conditions and inadequate pay. The mill owners responded by calling the police and setting dogs on the mill workers’ picket line. The strike was broken and my great-grandmother was forced to beg for her job back, at a reduced salary. Unions allow people to stand up for themselves; they give individuals collective strength.
Support the workers of Amazon and other big companies who protest that these corporations put profit before the people who work for them. Support the frontline workers who are daily putting themselves at risk to keep communities functioning. We can make the world a better place if we stick up for each other.
