If I was remaking the Princess Bride I'd have Buttercup hire Vizzini, Inigo and Fezzik herself to help her fake her death and take her away so she could go and seek out the Dread Pirate Roberts and get revenge for Westley's death, and also get out of the marriage to Humperdinck, so she rocks up on the ship in disguise and this time Westley doesn't recognise *her*, but she realises it's Westley and she's just making loads of snide remarks trying to figure out why he's been merrily fucking about on a boat this whole time, meanwhile Westley's having a little bit of a bi moment about Buttercup-in-disguise but because he's loyal as fuck he's not going to do anything about it but they get into a fight and Buttercup is like 'Why the hell did you just fucking leave your girlfriend to fuck around being a pirate you could at least have written a letter' and he's like 'Oh I'm sorry???? What on earth would you know about it, this is none of your concern, I should've killed you when you came on board' and of course during this scene they're also having a very tense sword fight with Inigo making quips from the sidelines like a sports commentator, and Buttercup's like 'WELL WHY DON'T YOU JUST KILL ME THEN, FARM BOY???' But then the ship lurches to the side and she gets thrown overboard and Westley is like 'Oh my God I'm so stupid!!!!' So then he has to dive in after and pull her out.

Morning boost, for anyone who didnāt see it yesterday. :)
Some monsters donāt have to be conventionally fightable.
There can be win conditions like Donāt Die, Turn it Off or Avoid It. It might have a way to be killed but stabbing it until it works isnāt one of them. So hereās some examples, going from typical to more abstract.
1: Things like hydras, trolls or some such, which can be killed with one specific source of damage. A good thing to try is a troll type deal which the players and probably characters can go āthatās a troll, fire and acid it isā and then have neither fire or acid be the answer. So now you gotta work that out but once you do, as long as you can survive long enough to kill it, you can kill it pretty easily.
2: Thereās a thing that disables the thing. It is nowhere near the monster. Classic non-D&D liches, which are utterly unkillable unless you destroy their fingerbone, do this well. A robotic creature that canāt be taken down with weapons accessible to the PCs, where killing the remote operator fixes the problem right up, but nothing else short of an antitank missile will.
3: Things which donāt exist enough to be killable. The Color Out Of Space is a great example of this, a non-corporeal and non-visible entity which blights the land, robbing plants and animals of vitality, colour and nutritional value until they disintegrate and the land is left as nothing but grey dust. Find a way to get it to fuck off, thatās gonna probably work, but actually punching it? No way.
Some other ideas for combat encounters with unique objectives:
Capture a Target
Deep within the Sylvan woods is a legendary Unicorn. The party have been tasked with capturing it and bringing it back- alive.
While the PCs can do nonlethal and still have straight forward combat as an option, there is a lot more room for setting traps, grappling, etc.Ā
Defend an Area
The outlook of the war is grim, and the PCs have been tasked with defending a supply base until reinforcements can arrive, bolstering the forts defenses against the onslaught of the Lich King
This can be a great way to fill a session with waves of combat and show off some shiny monsters you have been wanting to try. If you want some fully non-combat challenges, give the PCs a set amount of time to prepare and see what they come up with
Raid
When the sun faded and shadows took hold the Ranger eyed the convoy of wagons through a spyglass. Seeing a light guard they smiled and made a signal in the air with their hand. Simultaneously the dark shapes of several humanoids crept towards the caravan, each figure holding flasks of oil to light the wagons ablaze
In a living world, despite the PCs level of power relative to a commoner, the bulk of work in a wide-scale conflict is going to be done by NPCs. But there are a lot of things in war- factories, farms, machinery, trade routes, etc. that PCs can potentially destroy, and those have a lot larger impact in a living world than killing a few dozen monsters, soldiers, bandits, etc. would have.

and for those of you who DONāT know what Iām talking about Iāll give you an example
42 + 29 = 71
for neurotypical people, they use the method we were all taught in grade school where you add 9 + 2 to get 11 and then move the extra one over to make 4 + 2 + 1 which equals 7 to give you 71
but the way I do it (as many other people with ADHD as Iāve come to find out) is this:
okay so you have 42 + 29. if you take 1 away from 42 and give it to 29 to make it an even 30, you now have 41 + 30 which is an easy 71
or, another problem: 53 + 88
round that 88 up to 90 and take the two from 53 so you have 51 + 90. but wait I can make this easier. take 10 more from 51 to make 90, 100 and now you have 41 + 100 which equals 141
itās justā¦so much faster? and makes so much more sense to me
also? the math teachers that always took off points for kids not showing their work?
fucking HATED that. as someone who could get from point A to point D in my head in a split second, I felt like showing my work was often a waste of time when sometimes it felt like I just automatically knew the answer
or, if I didĀ put down my work, I went through a process that wasnāt taught and would get points reduced anyway because it wasnāt the way we were taught just because my brain worked differently than the rest of the class. my answer was always right. they just didnāt like how I got it
