linguistics is fun because you get to learn things like “we don’t actually know what a syllable is” and “dont ask what the difference between a language and a dialect is”
It is so ridiculously easy to gain a reputation for being competent by just reading signs.
This is not metaphorical. I mean actual, literal pieces of paper/plastic/metal/whatever explicitly erected to inform the public.
“How did you know this was the right trail?” I read the sign.
“Wow, how did you know what that flower is?” There’s a SIGN.
“How did you know we needed to use the side door?” THERE IS A SIGN POSTED ON THE FRONT DOOR.
Just…why are we having such different experiences of the world? People can read. I KNOW they can read. There’s nothing wrong with their vision.
Just. READ. THE. GOD. DAMN. SIGN.
This also applies to:

i find it disappointin’, though never shockin’, that an abundant amount of African languages like Wolof, Fula, Yoruba and more have a gender neutral pronoun naturally and yet i still have to hear people speak of they/them as a purely American thing? i know there’s an effort to ignore Africa in every single kind of global conversation but god damn nigga this shit is ridiculous. cause it ain’t just there, it’s abundantly there. everyday i’m proven more and more how possible and real black neutrality is; i really will make it my mission to prop up Africa more on this page, cause its place outside neutrality and transness in general is sooo unbelievably undeserved. y’all all neu black people too, never forget that.
"I am not a vessel for your good intent" goes hard as a line from a disabled perspective. Abled people care so much more about being their idea of a good ally than they do actually being a good ally. They shove their good intent right down your throat and then act surprised when you tell them they're suffocating you.
[ID: An image of a sign with a blue background and with a graphic of a stick figure in a wheelchair at the beginning, resembling disabled parking space signs. The text below the stick figure reads "I am not a vessel for your good intent." /ID]
This.
Today in perisex people likening being intersex to pollution...
"The prevalence of intersex individuals is up for debate although it is probably somewhere between 17000 to 500 ppm"
Really evokes the sense that intersex people are spread out in the atmosphere, or maybe the ocean. O_o
~*~ imagines intersex people just floating around in the atmosphere ~*~
It's bad enough that perisex people talk about pollution in the "it's making the frogs intersex!!!" kind of way. But using "ppm" like being intersex is the pollution was a new one for me!
(For the record: 1.7% is the most common estimate of intersex prevalence that is accepted by the intersex community. This is actually a somewhat old-fashioned estimate, as more recent research puts it more around 2.5%. Anybody trying to sell you a number that is orders of magnitude less common is trying to convince you that most intersex people aren't intersex.)
Ultergender: an intersex individual whose gender does not align with what was assigned at birth (may or may not identify as trans)
[alt text: horizontal symmetric stripes of purple, yellow, and white. As a blazon: per fess purpure, or, argent, or, and purpure.]
This is a sensory recolour of the existing ultergender flag! I wanted a version that would be easier on my eyes. The bright yellow in the original flag was giving me some eyestrain.
Free to use! ^-^
Me: "Damn people are REALLY BAD at knowing when to tag their eyestrain art/images...either that or they just don't care about photosenitive epileptic people like me. I feel really sad now." Person: "But Allison, what if they just don't know or understand what qualifies as eyestrain and what doesn't?" Me: "You know what? That could be a factor...While it is always better to be safe rather than sorry (so YES people should always tag eyestrain even if they're unsure if it "counts" or not) maybe you've got a point?"
Anyways! HERE'S YOUR HANDY GUIDE TO WHAT CAN COUNT AS EYESTRAIN! I'm pulling this straight from the Artfight rules page about what needs to be labeled and filtered as eyestrain because it's VERY helpful and VERY accurate! I also know not everybody has an AF account and might not always have access to this handy guide, and this is an important resource; That's why I'm sharing it here! (under the cut)
PLEASE TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY!!! THIS IS ABOUT THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF OTHERS!!!
Pro tip: when you see a brand new slang term, your first question should be how that term has been used in AAVE for the past 20-30 years.
It's wild to me that the word "hermaphrodite" got the connotation it has. Like, "Ah, yes, those freaks, those disgusting monsters. What best word to insult them? I know! Let's name them after the beautiful child of Hermes and Aphrodite, the glamorous Ancient Greek god of marriage. That will show them." Like. Why the fuck is that not a compliment? It should be.
Really? As in referencing a myth where a rapist prays to the gods to be never separated from her victim, and is *rewarded* by having their bodies merged into one? Without *any* consultation or consideration of her victim?
Idk i can't say I'm surprised a myth with such violent bodyhorror wound up being used to violently dehumanise people ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
an interesting linguistics find! so I'm reading this text from 1908 and it keeps referencing "hp" in the context of "not being at full hp" "applying your full hp to a task" etc
and I'm like....... okay that is a perfectly normal way to describe energy and reads totally clear to me, but I KNOW you don't mean hit points/health points which is the first place my brain goes, so what are YOU using hp to mean
and it's not explained in-text, which means it was common enough to not warrant explanation to the 1908 audience, so gotta look elsewhere
horsepower. turns out it's horsepower.
and I'm absolutely FASCINATED that a commonly used initialism from 1908 now stands for something different AND YET the contextual meaning is still the same to a 21st-century reader
I could hand this guy my nintendo switch and he'd be like, ah yes I understand, this ''''pokemon'''' loses horsepower throughout the fight
language is amazing
[alt-text: two versions of intersex flag, first one has colours which are lighter & desaturated. Second one they're both darker & desaturated. As a blazon: or, an annulet purpure.]
I made two re-colours of the intersex flag for when eyestrain is bothering me! ^-^
im being so serious when i say this but we need to bring back the "my genitals are none of your business" "if gender is whats in my pants then my gender is some loose change" mentality from the late 2010's because too many people on here are openly flirting with exclusionary people who spout enbyphobic rhetoric. stop caring about what people's agabs are you assholes. they literally mean nothing. they're not a zodiac sign or indicative of people's character. you are not wholly pure or wholly evil because of your assigned sex. you're just a person.
"what genitals do you have?" Is sexual harassment regardless if its from a security guard or a chronically online furry
