is anyone else annoyed that "ai" encompasses both chatgpt and tools we train to do repetitive tedious work for us. and by the ripple effect of articles like "scientists develop ai to detect cancer early" that make people argue for the merit of chatgpt or become anti-medicine. and by the general state of the world and society

they dont tell you this but like half of adulthood is just washing the same FUCKING pan
WASHING THE FUCKING PAN AGAIN!!!!!
Your doing so good at increasing your skill stat in pan washing. I'm so proud of you. Best pan washer out there.
this is so nice thank uā¦.
the only piece of book canon Iāll accept is that ilya wore the hawaiian shirt as a bit and then got there and wanted to die of embarrassment because omfggggg why was he wearing a stupid fucking hawaiian shirt in front of his ex
When youāre just trying to be SILLY because deep down you are SAD and trying to be your old self full of WHIMSY but then your EX walks in looking HOT as FUCK and stylish as SHIT and now he wants to TALK to you and is maybe FLIRTING and you gotta LOCK IN to see if heās newly single so you can FUCK later but he is BAD at SOCIAL CUES so you are trying SO HARD to be so COOL and CASUAL in your STUPID FUCKING HAWAIIAN SHIRT you bought at fucking WALMART that you wore as a BIT but he doesnāt KNOW that so you just look STUPID while he is sitting there being HOT and OK yes he IS single and now you gotta LOCK THAT SHIT DOWN and be super COOL and SEXY and NOT DESPERATE while calling him CAPTAIN and wearing your FUCKASS HAWAIIAN SHIRT
There are multiple chapters that are set in hospitals where the characters are attempting to recover from injuries that never fully heal. I must once again stress that my experience in WWI was perfectly normal.
There is a giant horrible mudplain full of unrecoverable and perfectly preserved dead bodies that the characters have to walk through in a land where the air is poisoned gas, and on a compLETELY UNRELATED NOTE: WWI WAS TOTALLY FINE AND NORMAL!!
And why are you all saying lotr was also a way for me to process the trauma and horror I experienced watching my own sons and students fight in WWII. Just because one of my characters longs to fight alongside her loved ones to save her country instead of being told to stay put, keep calm, and carry on while the world around her completely falls apart and all hope seems lostā¦..made to silently bear witness to the death and destruction of her people and the lands she is unable to protectā¦.
Yes, I began writing these books during WWII while my sons were actively on the front lines, but my experience watching the young people I loved and taught dying to save me and my country from invasion in WWII bc my generation did not in fact end all wars WAS TOTALLY FINE AND NORMAL!!
Everyone thinks the fantasy is in the elves and orcs instead of the idea that a group of friends all survived to go home. I must once again stressā¦
When my mother forgets a wordļæ¼, she is the queen of coming up with new words. Words that would take a third National Treasure movie to fully decipher.ļæ¼ I was talking to her yesterday, and she said this: āYou know the time for los jibbities is coming upļæ¼. You must be so excited!āļæ¼ Oh, is it time for los jibbities already?ļæ¼ I must have missed it on my calendar. ļæ¼Are we celebrating something? āOf courseļæ¼! We should all be celebrating, shouldnāt we?ā ļæ¼OK, so los jibbities is a happy thing.ļæ¼ Itās not like something is giving you the heebie-jeebies, which would have been my one and only guess.ļæ¼ āLos heebie-jeebies? Now youāre making things up.ļæ¼..and this is my show.ā Youāre right. The time for los jibbities is coming upļæ¼. Is this a season? āYes, the season for love. The season for pride.āļæ¼ OK, los jibbities. āYeah, sound it out.ā Losā¦jibbities. LGBTs! āSĆ, mira cuz youāre gay!ā āYou couldnāt just say pride season? You couldnāt just⦠*laughs*
HAPPY LOS JIBBITIES EVERYBODY!!!
I think fanfiction as a medium is different enough from mainstream literature in the tools it offers writers that it's a shame that it's not talked about more often. And it's not me saying "fanfic is better than books xD" because that sort of mindset is a symptom of people who aren't particularly well read in either medium. I'm just speaking of like... The little things you get to do with a fanfic that you genuinely can't really do in an original story.
I had a big fanfic in a previous fandom where one of the big reveals was the involvement of a kind of infamous villain, whose presence was built up to and foreshadowed through the whole fic until his reveal without ever mentioning his name, so that the name drop would be a gut punch. It worked especially well because of who the villain was and his presence in that fandom space specifically (it's very complicated) and if it was an original story this reveal wouldn't work at all the way it was written in the fic. Because if you don't have a predisposition to think about that character and his relationship to the hero in a very specific way, then just seeing their name won't do much to you; the reveal and the recontextualisation it pushes upon you hinges on your previous knowledge of the source material.
I think it's an interesting tool fanfic authors are given. One of my favorite fanfic of all time is partially a re-imagining of its source material's canon, and something it does is introduce antagonists much earlier in the story or deepen npcs' stories. It then works to evoke a tragic irony that again wouldn't work if you didn't know the source material, and it's something the author obviously has a lot of fun with.
You could call it cheap or a crutch and I mean, yeah, sure, it is a little bit: the fanfic relies on previously established emotional bonds and stakes to achieve its goal, and in some cases it saves the author from having to 'properly' build up its stakes. But I think it's INTERESTING that it has that tool at its disposal. I think it's a fun thing to play with and I think these built in expectations and emotional bonds are especially why I find story driven aus in particular to be fascinating in the amount of ways you can play with them. You know??
Love love love how Persuasion opens with Elizabeth saying no one will want Anne in Bath and then in Bath Anne's dodging admiring glances and engagement rumors left and right like Neo with the bullets. Jane Austen was cackling over her inkpots, I just know it.
The real problem with both "Persuasion" 2022 and Mansfield Park 1999 is that they didn't just change Anne Elliot and Fanny Price, they turned the main characters into people to whom the story could not happen. I do not believe that "Anne" 2022 would have been persuaded to give up Wentworth by her family. She's just not the kind of woman who would be. There was no reason for her and Wentworth to not get back together almost the moment they saw each other, because her personality was so different that them staying apart was illogical.
Jane Austen, whose personality was bestowed on "Fanny" 1999, would probably not have survived at Mansfield. She'd have been sent packing to Portsmouth years ago. She would have gotten in a fight with Mrs. Norris. Fanny Price's personality is just as vital to the story as her being pushed down by abuse. A different personality would make her into Jane Eyre and Jane Eyre famously did not get to stay with her wealthy relations long term.
So often, the events of the story are very tightly tied to the personality of the characters, which is why alterations to the character ruin the story. P&P 2005 gets away with making Darcy shy and Elizabeth more angry because that story can still be achieved with those traits. It's less interesting than canon Darcy's arrogance and snobbery, but it works. A snarky Fanny Price makes the story fall apart. Anne Elliot despising her family makes her story illogical.
You cannot just take a completely different person, throw them into a story and expect it to happen in the exact same way. It wouldn't.
Mr. Collins would be such a fan of ai. He would love it. He would have it write scripts for him to use for complimenting people. He'd ask it what to do in social situations and then when someone would tell him "I think that's a bad idea" he'd be like "my dear madam it's so good of you to be concerned but I think the highly esteemed Grok knows a little more about this than a lady like yourself" and then he'd go humiliate himself publicly.
I want to make a post about how hard it is to properly understand what's going on in another country, and how easy it is to misunderstand news coming out of another country, but it's hard to do without sounding either condescending or naive, so I'll start with personal examples and work my way up to it.
Once I saw a world map showing which countries have ever had female heads of state, and which ones were always lead by men. And Hungary was coloured in as having had a female head of state and first I wondered if it was a mistake, then I wondered if they meant the eighteenth-century Habsburg Empress Maria fucking Theresa, then I remembered that Hungary did actually have a female president between 2022-2024. It's just that the president of Hungary had been a ceremonial role for decades. Political leadership is in the hands of the prime minister and his cabinet, the president at best provides some symbolic moral leadership, but mostly they're just window dressing. Katalin NovƔk, our sole female head of state, never did anything but smile in photographs, and then she was discarded the moment OrbƔn needed someone disposable to scapegoat for one of scandals. Hungary has never had a woman in a democratically elected head-of-state leadership position, but if you don't know that, you might look at the map and assume our society is far more progressive than it actually is.
And this isn't new. The Hungarian State Socialist system really prided itself on social mobility, and despite them being a dictatorship serving their Soviet overlords, I'll admit that they did facilitate social mobility for women and for the working class. But real social mobility is slow and boring, it takes years if not decades to see the results of poor children going to school and poor adults going to night school. But the party wanted big showy immediate results, so they just picked people and put them in nominal positions of power, mostly for show. Look, there's young female factory workers in our parliament! Yep, because you picked them up and put them there, with like two months of "political training." They are backbenchers who do literally nothing, and the parliament itself does next to nothing. But an outsider who had no context, and operated under the assumption that actual political decision-making took place in the Parliament of State Socialist Hungary, might have assumed that there was far greater social mobility than actually was the case.
The thing I'm working towards is: always be wary and skeptical of a country's self-presentation. Even if there's no lie there, you might be lacking a crucial piece of context. There's such-and-such diversity in the parliament: okay, does the parliament have actual power or is it at best an advisory committee? The citizens get all these benefits: okay, who gets to be a citizen, is there perchance a wretched underclass of non-citizens? There's social security: does it apply to everyone or only to employed taxpayers? There's socialised healthcare: is it functional or is it just a barn where we put poor people to die? People have such-and-such rights protected by such-and-such laws: are they enforced or are people consistently denied rights that they are nominally supposed to have? (The legal situation of Roma people in Hungary is not that bad, the problem is their actual situation, which is in large part due to nobody enforcing the laws about segregation being illegal.)
They werenāt lying when they said that as an adult you have to fight for your life to practice your hobbies
They also werenāt lying when they said that when you fail to do so your soul shrivels up inside your body and dies

I need an AU where Shane and Ilya end up training together one summer, before Irina's dead, and Ilya comes over with a Russian group of players.
It would be normal for Ilya to stick with the Russian players, to keep speaking Russian and only train against the other players.
Except Ilya loves playing against Shane, and Shane's obviously been cast out to the fringes by the English and French speaking players. So Ilya pulls Shane to the Russian group.
Right to the centre of it, bc Ilya's got the same charming pull to him even as a child.
And when the other Russian players say that Shane's too weird to keep hanging out with them Ilya says "fine" and leaves with Shane.
And Yuna who's heard so often from her son's teachers that he's always been on the fringes, who's heard from Shane that he "doesn't really have any friends at school", who knows his hockey teammates still think he's weird but at least he's good and funny, gets to witness her son get chosen by someone who was pushed to choose. Even if Ilya's struggling to communicate with her and with Shane, he doesn't go back to his Russian friends.
He doesn't go the "easy" route.
I just think Ilya choosing Shane when all the other kids around them can sense the different-ness of Shane's autistic ways would be so good.
Especially when paired with them being penpals but the letters stop for a couple months and Yuna has to prepare herself to talk to Shane about how Ilya's left him too.
Shane who finds a hockey training thing in Russia for the summer, applies and is ofc accepted, and when he shows up with Yuna in tow ofc Ilya is there and he looks so so so sad.
And then Shane calls his name and Ilya looks at him with disbelief. And Shane asks if he's okay and Ilya, who's never actually lied to Shane before, tells him that Irina's dead.
Yuna watching her son hold his best friend together and telling Ilya that she's gonna look out for him now.
Why are you using chatgpt to get through college. Why are you spending so much time and money on something just to be functionally illiterate and have zero new skills at the end of it all. Literally shooting yourself in the foot. If you want to waste thirty grand you can always just buy a sportscar.
Iām really starting to think you people donāt understand what university is for. Youāre buying the accreditation that you can do these things. It doesnāt matter how you do them.
I can assure you if you're going to school to be an xray tech or a surgical assistant it does very much matter how you do the stuff your accreditation says you can do. We aren't all business majors.
Yes, but you actually canāt do an X-ray without an X-ray machine and you canāt do surgery without scalpels. We already rely on technology for everything. Offloading cognitive tasks just frees us up to do more. If you can do your job with chatgpt, but canāt without, you can still do your job. Iām sure you would find university much much harder without access to google or the internet too.
Do you think scalpels are magic and do a little song and dance and perform the surgery themselves like Beauty and the Beast characters and the surgeon is there to conduct the background music
What do you think will happen when your employer, who hired you because they saw you have a certificate to say that you have specific skills and knowledge, starts expecting you to have and use those skills and knowledge and you can't because you think a university degree is just a piece of paper that you buy
"Offloading cognitive tasks just frees us up to do more"
When you're in school, the cognitive tasks are there for the explicit purpose of being brain exercises. It's weightlifting. It is FOR building your mental muscles and making you a stronger thinker and planner. "Offloading the cognitive tasks", then, is just Not Doing The Weightlifting. What happens when you pay for your gym membership and just stand around messing around on your phone? Nothing. Nothing happens. Just money leaving your wallet. Nothing else.
Using AI is a short term pleasure that is going to fuck you over in the long term, and by the time you realize that you didn't build the necessary muscles you need for the cognitive tasks required of your ACTUAL JOB (or, like, adult life in general), it's going to be too late to do anything about it... except going back and doing the real work all over again to get you up to speed.
And if your response as a college student is "Ugh i'm already good at this though, i don't need the practice" -- sweetie, you have no idea how good at it you could be though. If you're good at it now but you keep working on it, you're going to ASTONISH yourself in a couple years with how good at it you can get. I was a good writer when I was in college; I am an ASTRONOMICALLY better writer now, because I put in the work. But you have to lift the weights and build your muscles to get there, even when it's tedious. There aren't any shortcuts for this. You can be content with your own mediocrity, or you can believe that you're capable of growing towards brilliance. Which one will you choose, mediocrity or brilliance? You get to pick right now.
Iām a Surgical Assistant and that ChatGPT stan pissed me off so Iāll use my job as an example. 90% of our job as surgical assists comes down to memorizing the names and usages of the thousands of unique instruments and equipment and sutures involved in surgery as well as having the critical thinking skills to anticipate the needs and expectations of the surgeons we work with. Thatās a ācognitive loadā that cannot be pawned off on a computer. If I relied on ChatGPT to tell me what instruments to have ready for a case, it would create a composite of what the most likely instruments to be used in a given surgery and assuming that itās even accurate, it would be effectively useless if my surgeon didnāt use any of those because each doctor is different. Surgeons get pissed off if you give them the wrong diameter size suture, so why would I rely on a soulless algorithm to tell me what my surgeon wants? And if Iām not figuring out for myself what they may need based off my own learning and not machine learning then why am I even there? Thereās a reason robotic surgery still requires a surgical assistant and a surgeon to operate the robot, technology is an easement not a replacement for human labor and in college learning is the labor you should be doing.
A common thread with ChatGPT simps seems to be that they truly believe all labor is as easy as their cushy middle management jobs in the tech industry. āBuying an accreditationā might work there but can you imagine someone in the medical field not actually knowing the subject theyāre licensed or accredited to know? Iāll give you a hint: the word we typically use is malpractice.
