Emily of New Moon - chapter VII
I have just started reading lm montgomery's Emily, and holy cow what is wrong with you ellen greene??
my very strong head canon is that isle and emily are meant for each other.
At least they both met as adults this timeā¦

why aren't any of you making memes about LM Montgomery's Emily of New Moon series? Do I have to do everything myself?
@no-where-new-hero
Any thoughts on WHY it had to be Walter?
so many??? is this from an old tag? š§ speaking very generally, i think it āhad to beā walter bc he's kind of intentionally portrayed as one of the least traditionally masculine male characters in the series. imo maud chose/marked him as the Ultimate Hero, not only in hopes of broadening the āacceptableā definition of manhood, but also to elevate a feminine, rather than masculine, moral framework.
love and light to anne of green gables but we have enough anne of green gables adaptations and they are all so beautiful. i want emily my gothic witch princess to truly have her time in the sunlight where she gets to be the insufferably stubborn little freak we all know she is.
something about Singer Sargent's work always makes me think about Teddy Kent...like he would have seen the beauty of the world and people through similar eyes...
Diana Blythe is one of my absolute favorite Blythe kids, and I saw you mention in a previous post about her being engaged to an officer in Readying Rilla? I would love to hear more about where that came from, when you have time. Her romance sounds like the stuff of Anneās young dreams!
yes! it is in readying rilla! it was rather ambiguously struck out, while still yet persisting in the sequence of notes officially given over to maudās typist (the j note similarly mentioned btw is just a comment about the size of someoneās feet), so itās unclear whether or not this was meant to be maybe squished in somewhere else or if it was purposefully cut altogether.
here you go:
i think thatās really cute though ā the idea of practical di having a fantastical romance with some dashing overseas hero, very young anneish indeed. myself, i rather like to fancy that this overseas fellow is in the royal navy even though āsoldierā implies a land based duty lmao, so di might live out some of those funny āunremorseful pirateā-esque fantasies exchanged between her and nan and jill, in the blythes are quoted! this is also probably more interesting a manifestation of di shaped romance than the one-liner we get in tbaq about a certain mysterious āaustin boyā from the glen, that people speculate sheās engaged to as well. unlessssss this is the same guy? idk idk. āaustinā was a brand new surname for maud to throw into the glen mix, š§š§š§š§ ⦠though, on the other hand, iām sure the glen folks wouldnāt have referred to an officer as a āboyā! soo.
interesting to me that between Davy, Paulina, Bruce, and Jims, our dear little Jims is the only one LMM comes close to pulling off imo. However for the sake of argument (and to echo an earlier poll!)
who is the most well-written character?
davy
paul
bruce
jims
I personally love and buy them allābut why did you call Paul Irving Paulina? What am I missing?
LMAO because I have a friend named Paulina, and autocorrect did its thing 𤣠poor Paul!
I automatically assumed Pauline Harris š¤£

This chapter has me wanting to know more about Hannah! She married young! Her husband sucks! She's kind! She's Rilla's friend! She keeps her doors open to all!
i think itās sooo interesting that hannah is a brewster too (even if she only married in). we learn in tbaq that the brewsters (the chapter with little walter jr pat, āthe cursed childā) have a weird relationship with the blythes (āthere was some distant relationship between dr. blytheās mother and uncle stephen [brewster]*ā), sure, but itās in the same chapter that also we hear, ānobody in the brewster clan, it seemed, approved of the blythes.ā sooo it basically deeply tracks that hannahās husband sucks, bc that chapter of tbaq spends 75% of the text reinforcing the same notion (pat is bullied by these people ā heās scared of his aunts and uncles, thinks theyāre only pretending to cry at uncle stephenās death, etc etc).
*iāve seen a total of (2) scholarly takes on this, but most seem to agree/take this to means theyāre cousins. the text in this line in saying that pat wouldnāt have been allowed to visit ingleside if it werenāt for the aforementioned ādistant relationshipā ā and it seems stronger to suggest this means a distant familial tie vs the vague friendship of an uncle, but ofc a grain of salt is necessary here
