i think there'd be alot less discourse around "fanfic vs literature" if more people treated fanfiction as it's own medium with it's own strength and weaknesses, rather than comparing it to traditional literature, because most of what i love about fan-fiction just straight up does not work in original fiction. at all.

and when i said "original fiction" i don't mean "canon fiction" or "published fiction" i mean "fiction that isn't already part of a long running series" because most fanfiction only works because it's an unofficial continuation of an already existing work, and that's not a bad thing to me, because there's stuff you can do in fanfiction that you couldn't do with new characters, it's why alot of modern tiktok romance sucks, because it assumes people like tropes for the sake of having tropes, and not specifically they like seeing characters they ALREADY LIKE doing them.

FanFiction also requires less of the readers in some way…like the first 100 pages of a book are introducing characters and lore, setting the scene. But FanFiction knows you already know the characters so the readers doesn’t have as much work figuring out the background and can get on with jumping in feet first and being immersed in the story right from the start. There is an element of psychological safety in knowing who everyone is already and knowing a story will have somewhat predictable elements whilst still being a totally new experience for the reader, and often more satisfying by allowing them flesh out theirs favourite characters more so than in the original works.

I'm posting this here because yes it's visually beautiful, but more importantly it shows the process of learning. It's not easy. It's scary. There's not a lot of people doing it.

It's beautiful because of the effort, not in spite of it. I feel like we don't value the effort of learning in social media posts, and this was incredibly done.
