WHAT

I had the honor to take RWS 1302 with Audrey this spring. I got to meet a lot of great people. Since I had taken RWS 1301 as a dual credit at EPCC, I did not know what to expect, but it was great!

SO WHAT

Taking RWS 1302 was a pretty challenging course, the kind of class that makes you get out of your comfort zone. This actually helped me be a better student, someone who takes the extra step. This course helped me in every aspect, especially in my creativity and writing, which pretty much sums up my major.

NOW WHAT

I will apply everything I have learned in my studies. The researching helped me become a better learner, therefore a better student and member of society. I will also apply everything I have learned into my life and further research, which I hope to continue.

FUTURE STUDENTS

My advice to you is be prepared for such a cool, yet challenging fun class. It is not hard, I promise. But you will have to be active and hard working. The assignments will be very interesting and enjoyable, I swear you will learn a lot of valuable information. You will practically finish the class as a future amazing scholar. I guarantee you will meet some pretty awesome classmates, whom you will work with and probably spend a crazy Saturday with. (cause we did!) Anyway good luck, study hard, do not leave things for last minute, and have fun! You will love this class.

Week 16

What?

Sitting here thinking what  I learn, i notice that even though my research skills where vastly improved by getting knowledge on all the available databases and other resources. This course has thought me something else.... In the class we developed a sense for diversity and cultures. To research about something we cared about or that could potentially affect us. In this process we learn to communicate with one another and really see writing and research in a real world setting.

so What?

Learning to communicate effectibly is key part in everyones future careers. As an engineer i though this was just another basic class, something i was forced to take. However, I now find that this is very well an extremely effective class. Whether I actually learned a lot or just simply realized the importance of effective communication skills. 

Now What?

I will continue to find ways on how to convey my ideas into projects. In my career it is essential to know how to speak to the public, to the contractor. Not everyone speaks “engineer” and learning to distinguish that is very important. Knowing the target audience and being able to attract  their attention is life and death in my field. During one of the assignments I was able to meet a couple of people and some projects came from that experience. This has encourage me to go around campus and find others with similar interest and do something different. I encourage everyone to take the initiative and find others within your collages to start a project you might have in mind. There are others just like us waiting for a push.

Tips?

If you are new to this class... Just be open minded to everything, from tumblr, to the research. Even when some content is optional, do not skip or miss out on it. This class is about becoming effective communicators, learning to network. This is the single most important thing in collage and for any career. Don't hide in a bubble, do not wait last minute to do the assignments (trust me on this one) DO ALL THE ASSIGNMENTS GET ALL THE A’s!!! ..... IF you happen to be a new student and reading this... reblog, ask me a question or two ill be happy to help!

WEEK 15

Part A: I want to start by making some sort of quote that talks about the issue of diversity some quote that can appeal to the audience’s feelings and then I would explain the quote or tell my opinion about it and then put an image with information to have logos and try to get all my information from scholarly articles to have the ethos. The logos I would use is this one:

Part B: There are several opportunities for minorities that come from different countries to study in the United States already but a lot of these opportunities are unknown by those people so I want to focus on remarking all these available opportunities and then start talking about the other issue which is economy outside the school, like affording an apartment, food, gas, etc..

Part C: In order to have more diversity in the work force we need the diversities to study science and get a degree without dropping early or changing their minds and get into another kind of field, I want to persuade my audience by showing images and probably a video that way I can get into logos and pathos, the ethos would come in the video due that most of the videos related to my topic are professional interviews and the idea is the same in everybody, STEM is great and we need more diversity, more people that are interested in this field.

Ethos, Pathos, Logos FTW

SECTION A: THE ATTENTION GRABBER!

I would start by giving some feedback to the audience on the rates of how many minorities are working for federal agencies. This articles and evidence will give my website more credibility as well as add to the logos!

SECTION B: THE POLICY CHANGE

To solve low employment on minorities we could have minorities fight for better representation. An example could be Congress, Congress is supposed to represent the population of each state, by passing laws that push for this equal representation we can have a better change in all federal jobs.

SECTION C: CALL TO ACTION

In order for this inequality problem to be solved minorities would have to stand together and take ACTION! Writing letter to Congress, for equal representation not only in Congress itself but to required federal agencies for a minimal quote of personnel diversity

Week 13

Hmmm… Sounds like a great idea!!

a. I am commuting the rest of this week to continue to find further information to improve our project!!

b. My group will be meeting to put everything together! I will be spending a portion of everyday to Find new information and try to conduct and interview with an academic scholar.

  c. My group has decided to gather information that will help improve and tie everything together! Such as new interviews to improve he documentary.

d. I will continue to find different scholarly articles to contribute to our project as well as try to interview academic scholars.

e I am concerned on how everything will turn out! I’m nervous to see the final product but I’m sure we will do great!!

f. I am comfortable with being able to get accurate and fitting information for our project since I have amazing group members!

Week13

A. I have been searching for anything that can tie in to our project, basically any day that I have off I use to add information to be ready when we all get together. B. We are meeting later this week on Saturday at 5pm to put all of our ideas together. C. I will address information from various sources As well as music, and ideas on how to present the material in the video. D.i have spent time and research to give my group adequate information that I think will benefit our project. E. I am concerned with being able to project all of our findings into the iMovie program. I have never used it before so I am a little anxious to see how everything is going to play out. F. I am comfortable with my groups background as I believe is going to really all come together and bring the best information together and create a great documentary.

Week #12

Group STEM! 

Part 1.

A)Topic: Diversity of Women and minorities in STEM

Our topic is on Diversity of women and minorities in STEM with a focus on how the minority women in STEM field are underrepresented. We will discuss why there is underrepresentation of women and minorities in science fields and will work to find the solution to encourage them to join the STEM field if they are interested in it. We will discuss the reasons why women and minorities choose not to take major as science subjects.

B)What we all think about the diversity in Stem Is that we do have diversity but it is not enough. Surely we all can see diversity in STEM but we want more women to be in STEM. You could easily see that women is lacking in STEM and of course women can make difference if they are with us. More effort should be made to attract more women and even minorities because diversity totally helps and it brings positive impacts to every one of us.

C) We chose to persuade women and minority groups in STEM on our video. We pick this audience as our targeted audience because without them there would be no noticeable diversity in STEM. We are targeting them because we are part of those audiences and we want more of our people in STEM.

D) One of the possible solutions for the lack of diversity is increasing funding for minorities and women in STEM at all levels. Although there are already plenty of scholarships at the undergraduate level, there is not enough for minorities and women seeking to obtain a masters or Phd. Another solution is to create retention programs at universities so that students who enter STEM majors stay and complete their degree. For example, study groups can be created in each class that will include all students so they can develop a sense of belonging and reduce the likelihood of changing major. These solutions will, over time, create more role models for people from all backgrounds, ethnicities, and genders, which will in turn make STEM majors more approachable by all people.

PART 2 

For this individual post I am focusing on Ethos and Pathos of the topic. 

Ethos: Participation of women in science is very important as there is very less role models for young girls. I interviewed Dr. Tuna Baruah a physics associate professor at UTEP for my primary research and she said that girls need to join Physics field so that there are more of them who can be role models for young girls interested in science and there will be more facilities like child care and health care for women. 

Pathos: In one of the scholarly article that I used for my Literature review, gives us the statistical data of women in physics.. Author  Barthelemy, Grunert, Henderson states that, “The dearth of women in academic physics is obvious through both anecdotal and statistical data. The field, at the undergraduate level, is around 78% male and 22% female. The discrepancy of men and women majoring in physics is even more staggering when considering that women earn around 57% of US bachelor’s degrees.”( 2012, pg-66) This is a data for physics subject but the numbers are similar for all STEM- (Science, Technology, Engineering and Science”) subjects and we can see that women are underrepresented. Women themselves are a minority in the field of STEM and the small portion which represents women are mostly white women. We don’t have much women of color in STEM fields and it is an issue that needs to be discussed. Because diversity in STEM is just not for the sake of diversity but to change the STEM field with different ideas and knowledge contributed by different genders and race.

Week 12

Diversity for Woman in TV Broadcasting

Purpose:Broadcasting is an area that people use in order to communicate, entertain, and debate on any topic of their liking.There are many ways of communicating such as film, radio, or television. The problem is there is no equal representation of genders. Men have the majority lead in all areas of broadcasting, specifically in the role of news anchor. Whether they always have the leading role with a female co-host or larger segments. 

Audience: Our intended audience includes men and women over the age of 18, females pursuing a career in broadcasting or film, and those who watch news.

Solution: Our solution is to empower women to pursuit the career in the male dominant field, and inform them of laws that help them. Finally to encourage the  audience to take part in petitions and movements for gender equality.

Ethos: “Both scholarly and industrial research points to the barriers that woman face in the broadcasting industry. In an outgoing study of communication undergraduates and graduates, Becker finds that woman consistently outnumber men as communication majors at the undergraduate level,” (Books, C, 2010). Men still hold majority of the job positions even though more women major in broadcasting. 

Pathos: “Female mentors can help teach and inspire young women. Networking helps empower woman in the industry. Creativity and willingness to implant new management styles help to reform corporate media culture,”(Books, C, 2010). Woman have the ability to make a difference when given the chance.

Advocacy: “ Companies and associations could also institute internship programs for graduate and undergraduate woman in which they shadow top executives. Such internships provide students with glimpses of management and ownership opportunities,”(Books, C, 2010).

For example, Turner Broadcasting System Inc. provides a paid 11-month training program called the Turner Trainee Program or T3. This program provides mentoring and job skills development, helping recent graduates jump-start their careers (Turner, 2008). This can be very beneficial to becoming successful in broadcasting.

Reflecting on our research skills.💯

This research has been a long ride, acquiring all the information and being able to put together a quality paper has been a unique journey. However, this experience has been a lesson for me. I learned so many things from this assignment. For starters I became more knowledgeable in my field. Nursing is a great career to take on, however many people don’t know why is much more important for me, a hispanic female student to undertake this challenge. In current time there is a very small representation of Hispanics in nursing in the United States. Conducting this research gave me the strength to move on with this dream that I have , which is becoming a nurse. Not only will I represent my people but I will also improve the quality of healthcare here in the United States. Mrs. Grijalva was a great interviewee that also transmitted great energy in this project. This was my first time I interview a person for such reason. It was a pleasure to work with her. Not only did she helped me with this assignment but gave me great advice for the future. 

Now I see that this experience was not only helpful for this assignment but for future experiences. I understand how to conduct and interview, the way behave, and what to expect. With this project I created a network that I can use in the future. As for my actual research, now I know where I stand. I know what to expect and the struggles that I will face. This experience definitely made me a more mature individual and well informed of the field I want to get into. 

Knowing that a small percentage of Hispanics in nursing is present here in the United States makes my research very useful piece of information to show awareness of such situation in hopes of motivating more Hispanics and there minorities into the involvement of becoming nurses. I created network with Mrs. Grijalva at The Hospitals of Providence, which in the future could be my first employment opportunity. Now I understand that this assignment is much more than a research paper but an opportunity and skills builder.

Awesome, this is exactly what I experienced. It is great to see that others are also taking what this class is teaching us onto the real world. And to have minorities empowered and able to achieve whatever they want. Its good to see you have created networks and hopefully they are useful in your career, wish you all the luck, and I'm sure you will represent and motivate not only Hispanics and Latinos but other minorities as well. :)

Week 11

So what have i learned so far? Simple, EVERYTHING. At the beginning of the semester I was still unsure on how to write a proper academic paper. Expecting simple open ended essays with no real research on a topic, more of writing my personal experience, this class took me into an unknown road. Research. Simple enough i thought, to my surprise that wasn't the case, it wasn't just a simple google search. Luckily with the information and examples provided in class and the same tumblr assignments that broke down each step every week. It allowed me to understand and generate my own research from finding sources, to using multimodal sources to capture the attention of the viewer, and of course learning to cite my sources was important. Lastly but not forgotten i learned to properly set up my paper, which was completely new for me. 

Reading this you probably wonder. All this new learning is fun and all, but why does it matter? Well, it helps me get a passing grade in the class, it helps me not get spelled for plagiarizing, and it keeps me up at night looking for the write sources. In all honestly, it goes beyond the class, as an Electrical engineer it might not spark an immediate response, but i do plan on going to law school, and i can come up with an endless list on why being able to do my research, relevant research for that matter, finding credited sources, and being able to grasp my audience’s attention is very important. Lastly I gotta say that as a first time tumblr user i came very skeptical to how all of this could possibly work, but besides the awesome blogs in this site, it is important to realize that we can communicate with other users, classmates, look at examples of the work we need to accomplish, nothing could be more accurate than the most current examples. This way of learning is very unique and in my opinion a great way to learn. 

Well unlike the fish in the gif above, the information learned in this class does not have boundaries. This semester we have learned so much about disclosed communities, minorities, social media, and other way of communicating problems, news, or anything we like to get across society. We have learned how to do it, to recognize who we are speaking to, why they care, and i think this will help everyone in every field of study. Engineers communicate with one another and they need to understand their audience, same principle goes to law and their language, communicating with a  judge and a client, learning to differentiate the audience is key to achieve the best possible communication setting,  specially to get ideas across. More than a writing class, the communication skills embedded within this course are something to really hold on to.

Methods & Interview Material

What are the requirements for this section?

These are basically the instructions for doing the research methods page. The research methods thing was kind of confusing to me at first so I did a little research to try to understand it better and I found a video that talks about different kinds of research methods.

We also need to send an interview request to someone in order to have our primary source, we need to try to record the interview, if we get the interview send the person a confirmation email. I will leave you a video about a good way to do an interview.

Week 10 Title Page, Abstract, Reference Page

The title page, for a long time I thought it was only the centered title of course and my name. Little did i know there is a lot more to it. This is what i found.

This gave me a clear idea of everything i needed to start writing!

The Abstract is the next thing to worry about. Whats the abstract? 

well the definition did not help what so ever... Later i found this:

Then lastly to serious business, the citations. No body is trying to get expelled here!

Good old Purdue Owl  had a very interesting “Basics” of citation but it didn't really make me comfortable enough, so i looked for something friendlier to my brain.

MAJOR: Mathematics w/concentration in Actuarial Science

My topic that I am doing at first glance may not reflect my major and may seem confusing.  But let me explain why I chose to write about “Women in Combat Arms”.

1.  I served 20 years in the U.S. Army as an Infantryman and I feel obligated to keep up with major changes in policy in the military, especially such changes are to occur within my previous occupational skill which women were always precluded from participation within.

2.  Additionally, my degree can be translated to jobs within the government whether Department of Defense (DOD) or another department that requires such a degree.

I chose Dr Valero because he is a Professor at the NSSI and his research interests include U.S. Intelligence, National Security Strategy and Modern Warfare.  Additionally he was on the faculty at the Department of International Security and Military studies at the U.S. Air Command and Staff College. What I hope to gain is knowledge on the “impact of women serving in combat related occupational jobs”, such as good order and discipline in the ranks and adjustment to change.

I chose Dr Boehmer because he is a Professor at the department of Poitical Science and his research interests include International Security.  What I hope to gain is how foreign countries such as (Russia, Middle East and Africa) which hold women in low regards, how our military would be viewed once women are allowed acceptance in.  Additionally, I want to know if those perceptions from those foreign countries hold true, will they become more aggressive against the U.S. Military.

I chose Dr Staudt because she is a Professor at the Department of Political Science and one of her research interests is women/gender in international development.  What I hope to gain is opinions on how big of an impact it will be around the world once women are allowed into combat arms jobs (Infantry, Special Forces, etc) once precluded to only men.  Also I want her views on how will other women from countries such as Afghanistan will view women in the U.S. Military that are fighting against males, would women there start standing up for there rights.

They also require 2.0 GPA or better and for the student to be enrolled in math 1411 Calculus 1 or higher.

The reason I selected professor Miguel Velez-Reyez  is largely due to his ethnicity, however he is also the chair of the Electrical Engineering Department, and he is a graduate from MIT.

Professor Wei Qian is also in my list because of his ethnicity, however he also attended three different graduate schools including University of Southeast, University of South Florida, and Notre Dame

Lastly my pick for Professor Scott A Starks is due to not being in the minority group, my research is on minorities but i would like to compare the graduate process of a non minority.

WEEK 5 BLOG MY RESEARCH EXPERIENCE.

My research project is on diversity in the military.  To start the magical process I wanted to find an article that encapsulated all the information that I needed for my research and I wanted it to come from a reliable source.  

Step 1 Go to University of Texas at El Paso Library website shown below

Step 2 click search and find

 Step 3. Under the Popular Databases click Academic Search Complete

Step 4.  I am a huge fan of EBSCO, but I want to narrow my search from the gazillions of articles on file.  So I click “Choose Databases”

Step 5. Once I arrived at choose databases I first deselect all of the choices, because I want the choices that best suit my needs.  So I scrolled down and selected “Race Relations Abstracts’” and “Military and Government Collection,”.  By performing this step it narrowed my selection down.

Step 6.  Click ok and it will bring you back to the EBSCO search engine.  Once I got there I typed “Military Diversity,” into the search engine.

Step 7.  Click search and that will bring you to the narrowed search that you have built. Below is my narrowed search and as you can see it narrowed it to 111 articles.

Step 8.  I scrolled down checking, first by determining if the articles title popped out to me and also it articles fell within the guidelines of of 6-12 pages in length.  Once I found something interesting and fell within the guidlines I clicked its title and and read the abstract.  Below is the choice I selected

Step 9.  First I read the abstract and the article had some appeal to me. Next I read the article and it had all the Rhetorical appeals; Ethos- Credibility (Author M.I.T, and goverment resources, Pathos- Emotions (Use of pics and tone in text) and Logos - Logic of the information provided seemed to me that the drawn down in force might be the reason for lack of diversity.

Step 10.  Last but not least I uploaded the PDF file of this article and a screen shot to drop box

ACADEMIC RESEARCH PROCESS 

1.So I started my research a little late due to work, but i came in confident and determined to get my full 6 points! How hard could it be its just research right?:p

2. Following the instruction I landed on this page, clicking on the tabs i struggled to figure out how to search. I had to step back and calmly read. The page was something more like a guide, it included a link which send me to the actual database. and I felt like this!

3. Its not so bad! i was running out of time, had to find the correct format, this part of my life i like to call “anxiety”. :(

4. FOUND ONE!! I finally got to a paper that match the requirements, it also was the perfect topic. Just when i was about to give up! I see the light, the abstract treasure me of my findings!

5. NOT SO FAST! i could not find the pdf download to the article. but i had time. I went back and did the same thing as in step two. After reading and taking my time, i figure it out!! Now just to save it, rename it something original “english research” that seem right ;)

6. Right CLICK to Heaven. I just had to click on the file and drag it on to drop box. Victory has never been sweater. The search wasn't too hard, it is actually pretty easy, and it could have been a lot faster. IF only i had kept my cool from the beginning i could have been less stressed! Now just save and done!

I just think you should look back at the intended audience and break down age, or something to make it less general. Otherwise very good!
