One of my favorite parts of Return of the King--and something I'll never feel normal about--is at the end where Frodo is dangling off the ledge in Mount Doom.

The ring has been destroyed. He’s come so far, suffered so much under the heavy influence of the ring. He’s so tired. It would be so easy to just…let go, end his pain.

But Sam sees the look of defeat in his eyes and goes “DON'T YOU LET GO”. He didn't travel this far, fight so hard for his master, spend every waking hour trying to keep some semblance of hope (while trying to keep his own doubts at bay), watching as Frodo deteriorated right before his eyes--just for Frodo to give up at this moment.

He made a promise--"Don't you leave him, Samwise Gamgee." And Sam didn't; and he's not going to leave Frodo now. He's not going to give up on him and he won't let Frodo give up on himself.

So he reaches out for Frodo; and at his insistence, Frodo finds the strength to grab hold of Sam’s hand, finds the strength to keep going after everything they’ve been through.

(Because sometimes when you're at your lowest, when all you want to do is give up, a concerned friend determined to stay by your side makes all the difference.)

And Sam pulls him from the abyss. Even if the situation still seems dire for them, at least they have each other.
