- cherry wine is about domestic abuse. it’s now called a cute proposal song.

- too sweet is about seizing the day and ignoring healthy habits in favor of having more fun with unhealthy ones. he’s actively critical of himself in the song. it’s now called a song about thinking you’re superior for drinking black coffee.

- take me to church is about worship as a metaphor for sex. it’s called a religious song.

- eat your young is a song about war and political greed. it’s called a song about sex.

- now, the strongly political message of nobody’s soldier is being ignored in favor of calling it a metaphor for hozier’s relationship with his fans.

when are we going to stop simplifying hozier’s music down to cute little cottagecore bogman forest music? maybe you dont want to hear this but i don’t care. quit listening to hozier for the aesthetic. there’s a reason why empire now, foreigner’s god, butchered tongue, etc. songs with unignorable political messages are among his least popular songs.

especially the fact that people have made cherry wine a cute song is infuriating, because the sweetness of the song is an intended part of the message. The song is intentionally setting up a contrast between the tenderness it's sung with, and the abject horror of the lyrics, because that is a common experience with abuse. Lots of people hate their abusers, but lots also love their abusers! Many people who stay in abusive relationships have deeply compelling reasons for saying! The lyrics "it's a crime/she's not around most of the time" and "it's divine/I have this some of the time" are both so beautifully bittersweet, as they SHOULD be!!!! Just taking the sweetness and tenderness is using one of the most powerful tools of the song and divorcing it from the unbelievably impactful original context.

Also while I'm here the song is just. so lyrically brilliant. Going from "the way she tells me I'm hers and she is mine" to "the way she shows me I'm hers and she is mine"? Beautiful way to show the escalation of abuse, from verbal to physical. also one of my favourite things in the song, that I haven't seen discussed that much, is the parallel in the ice/fire imagery in the first and last stanza. The song opens

"Her eyes and words are so icy/oh but she burns/like rum on the fire"

here, it's setting a baseline that's like, unhealthy, associated with ice. Coldness from a partner is cruel, but the imagery of "rum on a fire" is more intense, it gives this picture of someone cold and distant who occasionally blows up, and with the physical abuse in the song, it's easy to picture this dynamic. BUT!! the last verse starts with

"Her fight and fury is fiery/oh but she loves/like sleep to the freezing"

and so as the abuse has progressed, the old escalation (blowing up, fire association) has become the new baseline!! And the escalation is now also associated with cold, but "sleep to the freezing" specifically evokes death. Everything about this song shows the situation getting worse and worse, and the love the abused still feels for the abuser. It is a masterpiece and I love it. Give hozier some fucking credit!!!!!

Obviously, Hozier's "Cherry wine" is old news by now and I think there was a similar comment on YouTube, BUT I keep thinking about that one moment:

Just like she throws with the arm of her brother But I want it It's a crime That she's not around most of the time

There's an intentional pause after "It's a crime" line, which suggests ambiguity: his partner being physically abusive is a crime, and probably he realises this, but it's not easy to acknowledge that and walk away, there's attachment, so he just goes "it's a crime... That she's not around most of the time".

All this to say that I just love Hozier's music so much. And what moments in his songs keep you up at night?

I find it interesting how even in the abusive relationship he describes, he still is obsessed with his lover. I want to be upset for him, because he's being abused, but the song is so positive in its melancholy and he's so certain of his feelings, I feel torn. He practically worships the ground she walks on, but I can't help but feel sad that he's been manipulated in this way

a favorite quirk of mine that i find in hozier’s music is using self sacrifice to express affection. like honey that is a really messed up view of intimacy !!!
