Last year, about 3,000 species became extinct. It is 2011, and the Earth's 6th mass extinction is now. Let us enjoy its creatures while they are still alive. This blog is dedicated to endangered animals to appreciate their elegance and raise awareness of them, so that they might be remembered forever. Feel free to share animal ideas, suggestions, or FOLLOW for an animal-a-day! :) Key: NT -- Near Threatened VU -- Vulnerable EN -- Endangered CR -- Critically Endangered EW -- Extinct in the Wild EX -- Extinct :'(
The Imperial Woodpecker (Campephilus imperialis) is – or was – a member of the woodpecker family Picidae. If it is not extinct, it is the world’s largest woodpecker species at 56-60 cm (22-24 in) long. Population Estimate: 115
Range: Australia, now exists only in a preserve
Primary Threats: Competition with livestock, habitat loss, invasive plant species, shallow gene pool
Population Estimate: 10,ooo- 25,ooo
Range: Tasmania (Australia)
Primary Threats: Devil's Facial Tumor Disease, shallow gene pool (low diversity), cannibalism
This devastating disease caused the species to decline from 150,ooo in the 90's to the present estimate. Cannibalism increases transmission.
In the past, the Devils were highly persecuted and killed on the basis of predation on domestic animals. They were considered "pests". At one time, 5,ooo were poisoned annually.
Introduced predators, such as dogs and foxes, as well as road-kill also contributes to decline.

Population Estimate: 2o,ooo
Range: France, Romania, Russia, Spain, Ukraine
Primary Threats: Habitat Loss, loss of its natural diet (crayfish), hunting, and introduction of the American Mink.
Reduced 85% since the mid-1900s
The American Mink is much larger than the Euro Mink.
Population Estimate: 1,ooo
Range: Madagascar
Primary Threats: Madagascar Sapphire Mining, Habitat Loss
Perhaps the most dangerous threat to all animals native to Madagascar is the sapphire mining industry in Madagascar; it's threatening the existence of of preserves. (See http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2005/aug/07/conservationandendangeredspecies.internationalnews)
