The rich, diverse, free web that I loved — and spent years in an Iranian jail for — is dying. Why is nobody stopping it?
“The web was not envisioned as a form of television when it was invented. But, like it or not, it is rapidly resembling TV: linear, passive, programmed and inward-looking.”
Ralphie and i made it to the top of bear peak!
“The vitriol currently aimed at the Veterans Affairs makes me mad. I understand the serious issues of unacceptably long wait times and bureaucratic malfeasance. But in trashing the VA as a whole, we're at risk of demoralizing the system's doctors, nurses, technicians, aides, therapists, social workers and other staff — the very people who do the heroic work of providing health care to 8 million veterans.“
“There's a version of me that exists in an alternate universe. He's still living with his boyfriend, printing money as a TV exec, and rocking two testicles. He's also miserable. His world never cracked open, and he's resting on a bed of regret, purchased from West Elm. Then, there's the me in this universe: a broke, ballÂ-less wonder, hurtling through life with renewed passion and purpose. There's a dizzying freedom in a blank slate. As we get older, we tend to forget this. We become enamored with our tethers, fearful of releasing the very things that hold us down.“
"For years men have been revered for undertaking journeys of solitude and they have been applauded despite the fact that they may leave behind their family or disconnect from society for such a journey. Society has made it comfortable for women to be identified as a fool, crazy, self-centered and reckless if we should embark on a journey for solitude and growth."
"Dogs make the very best travel companions; just ask John Stortz and his four-legged friend named Wolf. John describes himself on Instagram as, “Dude and dog bumbling around the west.” What follows is a collection of incredible photos of a man and his beautiful dog traveling all around the western United States."
Snow Day
"Deep scrapes left behind by glaciers from the last ice age are clearly visible, providing a bit of perspective to the 2-dimensional soundings on the nautical chart."
For nearly 50 years, Gore-Tex has defined rainwear. But now, thanks to an innovative new process that builds water resistance straight into any item of clothing, Voormi is aiming to end that domination. Here's why their material keeps you so dry.
In a nutshell
English breakfast: Full-bodied and rich. Originally a China black tea but now frequently includes a strong Ceylon tea component. May also include teas from Assam, Africa, and/or Indonesia.
Irish breakfast: More robust than English breakfast. Generally has a strong Assam component, giving it a malty flavor.
Scottish breakfast: Typically the strongest of the three. May include teas from China, Assam, Ceylon, Africa, and/or Indonesia.
"Why not give pilots the gust information without them asking?”
Aviation experts tell FOX31 Denver, they have not been directly given an answer to the question, but suspect it has to do with keeping flights “on time.” If a pilot hears a crosswind reading that may near the limit of the aircraft’s limitations (or his/her comfort level based on experience) the pilot has a right to ask for a runway change.
That can lead to delays as air traffic controllers are required to allow the aircraft to takeoff on a different runway where the wind direction is either head-on or behind the jet. Pilots even have the power to delay the flight until the wind lets up or changes direction.
Commercial pilot, John Fluerege, for example, says, “At most airports in the United States, if you delay your takeoff, you can be put back in line. It’s one of the don’t do’s in professional aviation. Don’t delay the line that’s taking off.”
"We follow the van to some rez housing northwest of Wounded Knee. Cars are propped up on blocks of wood, trash on the street. The dirt road is poorly maintained. We reach the destination. Parker buys a dreamcatcher from one of the men while the woman goes under the porch. The puppies, we learn, were born this morning. Parker and the woman pass out the newborn puppies and put them in a kennel. The mother, a black and white stray the woman had found a few days ago, is fat and needs coaxing to get out from under the porch and into the kennel with it’s litter."
"Beskind says as she gets older and faces new problems in the world, she's thankful she's a designer. "It makes aging more tolerable, more enjoyable," she says. "I enjoy the age I'm in. I think it's one of the best chapters of my life."
And for the bulging demographic of baby boomers growing old, Beskind has this advice: Embrace change and design for it."

"Being an active woman rarely involves looking picture-perfect -- and a new commercial shows that there's nothing wrong with that."
