Cup of Culture
Take a bowl and go fishing with you. This is what I’d do if I weren’t home. Just sail the boat. This is ahi tuna poke. I really enjoy this dish because the practice of pescatarianism is a healthy transition from a vegetarian to an omnivore.

Veganism Update: 6 months later
Your friend V here is no longer the envied soul of Veganism. She lasted her vegan dietary trial for 2 weeks before noticing symptoms of fatigue and decreased vitality. V embraces the vegan movement but is just as accepting of her omnivorous peers. Eating eggs and toast with hash browns on the side has become a tradition of her weekend brunches. Not only does egg provide protein, it is the only non-meat product that contains healthy cholesterol and vitamin B12 for nerve functions. V concludes from her transitioning diets that, the reason she does not enjoy meat as much as a typical omnivore would, is due to the excess oil present in meat culinary practices.

Does decaf coffee have the same health benefits as regular coffee?
The unfiltered truth:
Decaffeinated coffee still contains a small amount of caffine, but the regular standard of a decaf beverage has at least 97% of the caffine removed, either through chemical solvents or the water method. This means whatever caffeine left to be consumed won’t affect the anatomy the way regualr coffee does.
Both kinds of coffee, when consumed on a large scale (3 cups or more), conduce to blood cholesterol increase. Aside from this undesirable truth, coffee is an essential to practically all of us.
Pros of Caffeinated beverage (based on studies online, these claims might not have the same level of effect on everyone):
-Analgestic effect similar to those in pain relievers
-Prevention to Parkinson’s disease
-Reduction in asthma symptoms
Pros of Caffeinated and Decaf Coffee:
-Lowers blood sugar and elevates resting metabolic rate, therefore prevents the symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes
Cons of Caffeinated and Decaf Coffee:
-Heartburn
-Irritation on stomach ulcers in susceptible people.
-Stimulate the nervous system enough to boost blood pressure

Veganism is for the environment, diets are the body.
After the 74th Annual Golden Globes ended, I browsed through my channels and KQED’s “Eat Fat Get Thin” program caught my eyes. It wasn’t so much the title display, but the fact that it was a revolutionary concept in nutrition and health. I started committing to Veganism on a health basis, so my long-term exposure to American health education didn’t at all prepare me for fat advocacy. The nutrient “fat” usually turns me away. However, I’m beginning to rethink my dietary consumption after watching tonight’s talk show by Dr. Mark Hyman. Here’s what I got.
“You only want to eat foods that rot, even flies won’t land on that block of margarine.”
Fun fact if you don’t already know, most margarine actually aren’t Vegan, since they contain whey or lactose ingredients.
On that note, I highly suggest that you remove any butter alternatives from your grocery list, shortening included. Unless you are an old class baker who prefers her puffs and fluffs. Shortening can last in the shelf for up to 30 years, as I learned from tonight’s episode. Anything that has such long shelf life won’t help regenerate growth, and has no advantageous nutrition (except for surviving on desolated places for an extended period). You get the picture.
However, to most common misconceptions, Saturated fats are not bad for you. It is among several kinds of fat that keeps you going. Saturated fat does not raise the saturated fat in your blood, sugar and refined carbs does.
Here’s what you need to know:
Eating fat speeds up your metabolism, cuts your appetite and cravings.
Healthy plant fats to include in your Vegan diet?
Olive Oil
Coconuts (MCT Oil)
Avocado
Nut and seed oil
Do eliminate trans fat or hydrogenated fat.
Don’t avoid Omega-3 fatty acids
Omega-6 Fats (in soybean oil, safflower oil, corn oil..) are deadly.
“Food is the most powerful drug on the planet. That’s why weight-loss and health is based on what you eat and not how your eat.” -Dr. Mark Hyman

(via https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_n6q_qXvnU) Some Vegan facts! What?!
A mini recap to give you a refresher on the animal-friendly proteins that can be easily included into your diet. Some of these like nuts, seeds, and avocado are also vital as plant-based fat.
Let’s have some fun with our Vegan boss Patrik Baboumian!
Magical Taco! Tastes so zesty without any cheese, meat, or sour cream. Just a variety of veggies!
Try these:
Tomatoes, green bell peppers, red onions, black beans, yellow corn, lettuce.
Top with medium salsa and cilantro.
Lightly grill taco shell, which is just flour tortilla in here.
Vegan Marshmallows
If the holidays had you feeling like some sort of an outcast for not being able to enjoy a classic cup of hot chocolate, or roast marshmallows by the fireplace. Worry no more! Because Dandies created their very own Vegan marshmallows and they taste better than your regular gelatin fluff.
Just to up my pitch, I will share with you Dandies’ exclusive recipe for Crispy Treats while I am chewing on the big friendly marshmallow.
Dandies Classic Crispy Treats
1 10 oz. bag of Dandies Marshmallows
5 Cups Crisp Rice Cereal
2 Tablespoons of Margarine
2 Tablespoons of Coconut Oil
In a microwave safe bowl, combine Dandies, margarine and coconut oil. In 30 second intervals, with a quick stir between each, microwave mixture until marshmallows are fully melted. Mix in cereal and stir until evenly coated with marshmallow cream. Press mixture into a 9″ x 9″ pan. Once cool, cut into squares and enjoy!
P.S. As a friendly reminder, get Dandies at a grocery store (the more hip the greater chance they’ll carry it) instead of through online orders, it will save you $2 even before shipping.
My only treat of the day after getting back from yoga class. This is a sweet, chewy, bite-sized treat perfectly proportioned into a 1.4oz pouch. The crumbling bits of granola and dried fruits are ideal as garnish for Vegan yogurt. The package does a good job tricking my eyes into believing they are choco-chip cookie dough, and their sweet factors do not disappoint.
Give yourself a try!

Can V Keep Up with Veganism?
The struggle is real. The taro bun my mom brought home is tantalizing every inch of my taste buds. If I say chocolate, can you relate?
To be completely real with y’all, V’s main motivation for committing to a Vegan diet is so that she can change her eating habits for the better. Turns out, it’s not as idealistic as it sounds. It takes immense mental efforts to cut out the long-term addiction to additives/sugar, which are present in 99% of the processed sweets available to us (not from statistics.) Sad right? There is no reason for us to be injecting chemicals into our body when we can ingest natural whole foods from the Earth. Don’t use Veganism as a justification for eating junk foods, let it be the reason behind an improved, plant-based diet.
