”How come you’ve never seen the Amazon rainforest if you’re from Brazil?” big country
Here, this should make it clearer:
Wait, hold on, I can illustrate it in a funnier way
There’s around one and a half Frances between me and the Amazon rainforest.
I had no idea “coach” could also mean “bus” until like, a second ago and I stared at your reply in disbelief for a good minute because I thought you were telling me to do the trip in a horse-drawn carriage. I was like “Coach?! Like Cinderella?! Where would I even get- that HAS to be slower than a car!”
keeping getting people asking what happens if a gag candidate gets elected to parliament and im like well they become a member of parliament
they're not a separate category from real candidates. theres simply no rule that precludes running for parliament as an intergalactic space warrior.
Recently saw the trailer for a romcom with a premise I keep thinking of as "the purge but for sex" where single people are only legally allowed to fuck once a year (but our two hets are looking for Real Love, of course) and I'm just not straight enough to suspend my disbelief for this at all. First of all this is set in a christofascist dystopia and I don't think they know. Secondly I cannot imagine a world where this would actually stop literally anyone. They're gonna reinvent cruising culture but for straight people
It's like they desperately want to write Mating Cycles/In Heat but they're too afraid to get that weird with it. Also the guy is really really really ugly but I'm a lesbian so this is just my sacred duty to think that. I digress. Absolutely mind boggling to not only hit the "in a world where straight white people are oppressed-" romance plot, inexplicably centered around premarital sex, but *also* feel weirdly anti "hookup culture" or whatever like "But SHE'S not a SLUT like everyone else" this feels like the culmination of everything about the mainstream romance genre that pisses me off
This was one of the previews before Evil Dead Burn and it honestly might have been scarier (barely joking) if only for the absolutely insane level of "the author's unexamined biases" going on
I feel lied to. This is where the bugs bunny NO meme cokes from
Ah lads they fucking rotated him

This is an absolutely FASCINATING cultural snapshot.
@21st-century-minutiae
In the early twenty-first century, symbols of the United States (such as the flag or the colors red, white, and blue) were co-opted by fascists, as part of a cultural trend with clear roots in the twentieth century. As such, in order to avoid signalling support for the coercive elements actively looting and destroying the nation, people seeking to celebrate the nation on its official founding day (the fourth of July), looked for new symbols.
In the year 2026, the fascist, infantile, compulsive liar president of the United States, in one of his many fits of egomania (and desire to steal money), got it into his head to renovate the Reflecting Pool, a component of the Lincoln Memorial found in the United States, to make it look more "blue". He instigated an overpriced renovation, giving the contract to a political supporter (and likely pocketing some money via kickbacks) ignoring standards and procedures that were in place to enure quality and prevent corruption. The stooge company drained the pool, painted the bottom blue, and refilled the water (not before the president had his motorcade drive across the bottom of the empty pool for some reason, damaging the renovation).
The new, darker color resulted in the water heating up, and the previously clean pool being filled with algae.
The algae served as a symbol of base reality, demonstrable proof of the grift and idiocy and senseless destructing inherit to the presidency in a manner that violates the fragile ego of the idiot and the corrupt brownnosers serving him. In this way, algae became a desirable symbol in the year 2026, as documented above.
its really darkly funny that so many public figures keep dying "of cardiac complications after a brief illness" like wow y'all are Never ever going to say the word COVID huh.
Like it may very well be covid, but this specific cohort of guys are statistically speaking lifelong fans of uppers, and they are also extremely never ever going to say "cocaine-induced stroke."
They're also just... elderly? It's really not unusual for folks in their 70s and 80s to die of heart attacks.
Graham apparently has family history, I saw it reported that his dad died at 67 of a heart attack, and the poster was speculating Deep Vein Thrombosis could be the cause of his sudden death. Anyone on long plane flights is at risk, and Graham DID just fly to Ukraine and back on a short turnaround.
Okay but COVID, a neurovascular disease, does in fact increase chances of literally any disease and people are ignoring that it does and that it is still circulating. Maybe Graham didn't have COVID immediately before he died, but COVID could have been a factor, and plenty of younger people have died of "mysterious" cardiac complications that not naming COVID as a risk factor is a blatant pattern.
Anyway 🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀
A former case of COVID definitely increases your risk of cardiac events, yes. I don't know if that's a bigger factor here than family history/possible blood clot from plane trips/being fucking old. I don't like OP's framing of asserting "all these deaths are COVID but They won't talk about it." That's conspiracy talk and we should do better. We can absolutely talk more about the long term effects of Covid infections without assuming they're the main cause of death for public figures.
absolutely fucking wild to me that you are taking a tone of someone who is so smart and objective and skeptical of this ✨✨conspiracy talk✨✨ while in effect trying to shut down conversation about how 1. covid has been a factor in many deaths since its emergence and continues to be now in 2026, and 2. there is a strong and easily observable interest on the part of those in power to ignore and downplay it as a factor. these are both facts.
You're not increasing the quality of this discussion. You're injecting unnecessary skepticism about something that is doing a huge, HUGE amount of harm to countless people. Never once in my post did I say "I think every single sudden death after a brief illness is due to COVID and nothing else." I said that COVID is almost certainly a factor in many of these deaths and that politicians and legacy media never actually say that when discussing them. Both of which are true things. If you have not seen the intentional downplaying of the impact of this disease, you are not paying close enough attention. As someone impacted by it directly and who is seeing the impact of it play out, totally ignored and unacknowledged, in my community, I need you to understand that your rhetoric here DOES HARM.
any further attempt to lecture me about "doing better" will result in being blocked. have a fucking day
you should have seen me a couple of years ago!
random anecdote for father's day: one time during a long car ride my dad asked me, "you're familiar with Murphy's Law, right?" and i was like "isn't that the one about how anything that can go wrong will go wrong?" and he said "yeah, exactly" and i said "why do you ask?" and he went "well, have you heard of Cole's Law?" and i said "no, actually, what's that?" and he said "it's mostly lettuce and carrots with a little dressing mixed in"
I wish I’d had math education that worked on me. teachers used to give me those logic worksheets during indoor recess because filling them out would visibly delight me. everyone thought this was evidence that I’d be very good at math if I just “applied myself”.
unfortunately no one listened when I explained that the numbers all had distinct personalities and that equations were complex relationship dynamics that often upset me. teachers would blink, shake their heads, and kind of quietly warn me not to say stuff like that out loud. because no one had heard about synesthesia and I showed no other signs of psychosis, I just went on sucking at arithmetic and not learning my times tables because 8 was cruel to 5 and I didn’t want to force them to interact.
but man. imagine. imagine if someone had bothered to help me figure out how I could have used this to my advantage. there is a whole math-related portion of my brain that went undeveloped because adults were like “if we don’t acknowledge the way this young child seems insane, maybe it’ll go away!”
and it did go away, mostly, well after that developmental window had closed.
there's this weird thing people fall into online a lot, where people assume that if the [perceived-to-be-inferior] version of [activity] is discouraged then people will, naturally, do [perceived-to-be-superior] version of [activity] instead. When really it's just as (or more) likely that if [perceived-to-be-inferior] version of [activity] is discouraged people just won't do it at all.
audiobook listeners are not necessarily people who would otherwise do a lot of traditional reading if audiobooks did not exist, many are people who simply would experience zero books. Booktok romance readers would not necessarily be reading the classics if booktok did not exist, many of them would simply not read. Fanfiction writers would not necessarily be novelists if fanfic wasn't an option, many would just be people who didn't write. You know?
