struggled to put this to words for awhile but. as someone raised with a catholic understanding of discomfort/pain/pleasure in my adulthood its become almost an obsession of mine to discover healthy/necessary discomforts and play with them and then fully indulge in delights otherwise. like i think it makes life worth living

if you have no idea what i mean i can like. explain. part of catholicism *in the way i was raised in it* and a lot of other people i know discomfort/pain/unhappiness were like. the expectation. suffering was simply part of being alive and to indulge in alleviation from suffering was only allowed if you *really deserved it*. anything less would be considered overly indulgent. im not catholic anymore and i am aware this doesnt reflect the practices of everyone who is, BUT i do also know when i talk about this it resonates with a LOT of people.

what this looks like in adulthood is believing that suffering = good, hardworking and comfort = bad, lazy, greedy. and for awhile to buck this, i leaned FULLY into being hedonist, i LOVED being 'bad lazy greedy' because i had to learn to love it in order to not hate myself for it. part of leaning fully one direction is to break off clasps that might be holding you back from really understanding your former constraints. its why i never try to intervene or lecture people at this stage but its not one you can stay in and still grow up. eventually there are things that will make you uncomfortable or even suffer a little that are actually, well. good for you.

discerning the difference between 'good discomfort' and 'self permitted harm' or 'not asking for help when it is fully available and appropriate to ask for' is now something i love to do. its like a game for me because there is rarely a purely black and white answer. you need to be uncomfortable in order to understand people who are not like you. you need to be uncomfortable to address the ways in which you might be hurting others so that you can correct that behavior instead of continuing to ignorantly exist within it (because it is easier and more comfortable to do so.) but by doing these things you will be happier, a kinder person to others, and typically youll make friends along the way too.

good discomfort or good suffering to me has become like. its like a feeling i chase. now when something scares me or makes me uncomfortable i want to run head first into it. i want to understand why it does. i hate the idea that i may be complacent or unchanging in ways restraining me, and now that ive bucked outside restraints that would demand me to be uncomfortable to apologize for living, id like to be uncomfortable on my own terms so that i may really, fully live.

you can only do this yourself. and you can only know when youre ready to do this yourself. and it doesnt look like, nothing is wrong at all and everything is comfortable and good for you. sometimes it happens when everything is at its absolute worst and instead of running to whats comforted you before you run head first into what scares you the most. sometimes being scared is why you got into that situation in the first place.

theres a lot of pain and a lot of misfortune thats out of our control as individuals, but what feels good about this, for ME, is that i control it. thats the point of embracing fear, sadness, shame, discomfort... they should be yours.

They have even managed to get Nintendo DS games to work on this thing! You press r2 to bring up the second screen and l2 to use the virtual stylus. Games like Pokemon Black and Mario Kart DS work great!
