🚨 Surviving the surgery means nothing if she dies in the ICU.

My mother survived a high-risk surgery, but she is still in the ICU fighting for her life. The surgery was only half the battle we cannot afford the daily medication keeping her alive.

The Goal: We urgently need $465 for this week's ICU care.

The Crisis: We only raised $35. The donations have completely frozen.

The genocide of Palestinians continues every day in Gaza. Israel traps Gazans in a smaller and smaller area with no escape, and abducts and incarcerates adults and children in prisons rampant with torture and sexual abuse. They launch active military operations on a daily basis, using airstrikes and shelling to destroy lives and essential infrastructure. Israel maintains blockades on food and medicine to slowly break down people's bodies. Do not look away from this.

Even though they are living through a genocide and have no means if income, my friends in Gaza must pay for everything you and I pay for at steep prices. They have to pay hundreds of dollars in rent, $60 for a water truck delivery, $50 for a cooking gas cylinder, $30 for mobile internet access. All this before even accounting for the costs of food ($40 for a 25kg bag of flour, let alone anything nutritious). All this before the costs of medicine or healthcare bills.

Things that have been rotating around in my head this week:

There is no Ygor in the original Frankenstein novel.

There is a lab assistant with a hunchback in Frankenstein (1931), but he’s named Fritz, played by Dwight Frye

There is a nearly identical character also played by Dwight Frye in Bride of Frankenstein named Karl

In the lesser-known Son of Frankenstein, we do meet a character named Ygor, but he’s nothing like Fritz or Karl at all. He’s the village crazy guy who survived his own lynching and fucked up his neck after being declared dead. He speaks broken English and uses the Creature to kill the jurymen who declared him guilty. He is played by Bela Lugosi.

The pop culture concept of an Ygor character draws from both characters. He usually is a hunchbacked lab assistant who speaks broken English, and a lot of people who haven’t read the book believe he’s part of the story.

In other words, society Frankenstein’d a character into Frankenstein and pretended he was always there

This Fourth of July, I ask that you support Native Hawaiian independence.

The Kingdom of Hawai’i was illegally overthrown with the help of American businessmen and we have suffered under the iron grip of America.

Our land is simply seen as a vacation spot, my people are simply seen as tour guides and hula dancers. We have had our culture, our history, and our people turned into a commercialized joke by America.

The rampant tourism kills our islands with endless hotels, attractions and overcrowding. The housing and living costs are out of control because of the false “paradise” narrative. The Navy poisons our water and destroys our land. Covid has killed so many of my people due to the reckless and selfish nature of tourists. I have lost loved ones to this virus, because tourists “couldn’t stay away”.

My people have suffered. I have suffered.

We are more than your vacation. We are more than an aesthetic.

We are a sovereign nation illegally occupied by the United States of America.

Restore Hawai’i to Hawaiians. End the American Occupation.

listen I understand. they're amazing movies and I do think it's awesome that they were filmed here!!!!! but holy shit! it's the only thing anyone seems to be able to talk about when there is ANY discussion of these islands!! I would super love to be able to discuss our ecology, politics, culture, landscapes, and people without needing to hear about hobbiton every single time

I don't knowwww. it shouldn't be a huge deal but at the same time, the image an overwhelming amount of people have of aotearoa comes from those movies. our struggling ecosystems get overshadowed by fields and grassy hills and other non-native biomes that were explicitly chosen to depict the england-inspired fantasy land of middle earth. these same biomes only exist here because english settlers historically slashed and burned massive swaths of forest to create them, and now they're framed as famous and beautiful. mass deforestation of precious native forests. I don't know man. it annoys me juuuuust a little when every other post I make about this place gets a lotr joke plastered on it.
