it's a common trope in garashir fics for Garak to mispronounce Julian's name in an exotic alien way, but what about the opposite?
Garak comes up to Julian and sadly confesses that his name is actually pronounced Gh'raaque and everyone has been mangling the pronunciation all this while. he doesn't want to make a big deal about it, but the lack of respect for Cardassian culture and language is making him depressed. Julian really takes it to heart and spends the next several days correcting everyone's pronunciation.
Then he find out Garak made the whole thing up just to troll him.
Personally love the Idea that most of star trek is reconstructed from personal logs. Because it plugs all the plot holes and explains a bunch of stuff like "why does the ferengi characterisation vary so wildly?" Humans are bigots
"why do the trills change appearance between tng and ds9?" Mistake in the logs
"why arent garak and Bashir fucking?" They are, garak keeps deleting if from the logs
I've been thinking a lot about the little ways we see Garak's character change over time, just in terms of how comfortable he is talking about himself and his past. Like at the end of The Wire, he's saying "haha what's up with Odo thinking I was in the Obsidian Order, that's weird," and he knows Julian knows that he absolutely was, but they basically both agree to pretend he wasn't and not talk about it. But then by Our Man Bashir a couple years later, he's just directly saying "your spy fantasy is stupid and unrealistic and I know because I actually was a spy." At some point in the middle there he got more okay with acknowledging and discussing that.
Similarly, back in Past Prologue, he was responding to Julian calling him "Mr. Garak" with "it's just Garak," as if that's his entire name and not only a last name. In The Wire, he can only talk about "Elim" as if that was a different person. But by "Things Past" in season 5, he's talking about the name tag that said "Elim Garak, former Cardassian oppressor," and you might be distracted by how funny that is and not really think about how that means he told a whole bunch of people his first name! He was walking around with his full name on a name tag for strangers to read! That's so hugely different from a few years ago! It's just fascinating to me how some of these developments sort of take place offscreen, in between episodes, and Garak just shows up again being a little less cagey about his past and a little more comfortable with who he is the next time we see him.
idk what do you guys think they did with all that time in prison. this was really the only option to me.
Do you think when Bashir gets a clue about Garak he tries to use his "secret agent Bashir" moves on him and Garak gets so flustered that he gets lightheaded and needs to lie down?
Julian finally decides to lock in and stop the ambiguity while fully expecting Garak to play the fool and try to keep things as they are. But Garak, after his dizzy, flustered lie down, fully out spy-rizzes him in such an effortless way in an actual dangerous situation that Julian's caught off guard. Like their moment in 'Civil Defense' x100
Part of what makes DS9 feel so real and alive is how many kinds of Guys it introduces.
Like I just love "Guy who sneaks into the offices of famous Starfleet captains to take a picture of himself behind their desk". It's both:
Perfectly plausible for there to be someone like that.
Incredibly funny.
I like them a lot okay
so apparently during renaissance there was a very popular saint - saint julian and he was patron of murderers!!! in every reality they truly are a saint and his sinner
TOS Textposts pt 24-???
Au where hua cheng was searching for xie lian more actively so he set a bounty on him and had "have you seen this man" posters with a drawing of xie lian plastered all over the place
Xie Lian finds said poster and goes "when did I offend the ghost king so much he's offering this much money to find me!?"
Can't trust anyone these days
DS9 Textposts pt 118-???
Lmao Julian is so happy Garak is coming on the trip and he didn't even have to ask
Garak's reaction to Julian's smile tho
