Advice for Writing Papers

The first lesson I learned in my college English class was how to eliminate crutch verbs or to-be verbs.

What are crutch verbs? Be, Am, Is, Are, Was, Were, Been, Being, Have, Has, Had, Make, Making, Made, Take, Taking, Took, Takes, Give, Giving, Gave, Given, Show, Showed, Showing, Shown, Feel, Felt, Feeling, Get, Got, Getting, Gotten, Use, Using, Used, Seeming, Seem, Seemed, Put, Putting, State, Stated, Stating

When revising our papers, we would circle all of the crutch verbs. Our goal was to cut them down by at least half for the final draft. This helped my writing immensely. I highly recommend you try this technique for your future papers :)

What’s wrong with to-be verbs?

- They claim an absolute truth and exclude other views.

- They are general and lack specificity.

- Vague - Instead of saying “She is great.” You could clarify why she’s great.

How to get rid of to-be verbs:

- Substitute the verb for something else. Instead of saying “The ice cream is good.” say “The ice cream tastes good.”

- Rearrange - try starting the sentence differently to eliminate the verb.

- Combine sentences

I would also recommend looking out for this/that/it/things/stuff.
