My undergrad adviser used to argue that there’s no better way to encapsulate the trajectory of Shakespeare’s career than by comparing these lines from Richard III:

Methought I saw a thousand fearful wrecks; Ten thousand men that fishes gnawed upon; Wedges of gold, great anchors, heaps of pearl, Inestimable stones, unvalued jewels, All scattered in the bottom of the sea: Some lay in dead men’s skulls; and, in those holes Where eyes did once inhabit, there were crept, As ‘twere in scorn of eyes, reflecting gems, Which wooed the slimy bottom of the deep, And mocked the dead bones that lay scattered by.

This imagery is terrifying in the earlier play, but by The Tempest it has itself become something rich and strange: what was once mockery is now, in a sense, redemptive. The body is no longer scorned, but transformed.

Katie Ledecky ladies and gentlemen

She was halfway to the finish line before the rest of the swimmers were still headed for their last turn. Ledecky finished a whopping 11.5 seconds before the silver medalist, finished only 6 seconds after the last person started the last 50m, and finished just under 2 seconds ahead of the World Record (which I am pretty sure she set).

For those playing along at home, her time beat the men’s WR before 1976 and was only 28 seconds off the men’s WR for the 800m. She’s also the first woman to sweep the 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle in 48 years.

And she’s only 19.
