July for Loki | Lokabrenna
July for Loki is a concept/idea of taking the month of July to honor Loki originally presented by Galina Krasskova. While I do not support Krasskova and in fact actively avoid her writing as she is a well known bigot and folkish (see here for more on this), I do like the idea of July for Loki and the celebration of the helical rising of Sirius.
Why July?
Loki is a deity of fire and flame and I have always felt his presence closest at the height of summer when the sun blazes like fire in the sky and as someone who lives in the Norther Hemisphere, July and August are when I would consider summer to be at it's hottest. In these months I can feel Loki's excitement and energy, so what better time is there to honor him?
What is Lokabrenna?
Lokabrenna is the Scandinavian name for the star Sirius. It translates to something close to "Loki's Brand" or "Loki's Tourch." Lokebrenna can also be referring to the helical rising of Sirius and is often considered to be the marker of the height of summer's heat.
How to Celebrate
There is no set way to celebrate July for Loki or Lokabrenna. The idea is simply to honor him in someway during this time. Weather that is every day of the month of July or once a week. You can also opt to do just one thing at some point in July to honor and recognize Loki. These things don't need to be huge blots and can be a simple as lighting a tealight candle in his honor or sharing some of your morning coffee with Loki. July for Loki isn't about following some big dramatic tradition. It's only really been around since 2012. It's more about being mindful and taking the time to recognize, spend time with, and honor Loki! That being said, one way you can celebrate is by dedicating Lokabrenna to him.
When is Lokabrenna?
Lokabrenna is a celestial event and therefore doesn't have a set date. In addition the date and time will be different for everyone based on their location on Earth. It generally takes place during in late July/early August.
How to Calculate Your Personal Lokabrenna
I posted about this a few years ago here, but I wanted to share again. For anyone who's interested in finding their personal date for Lokabrenna, I used the info from this post from the Lokean reddit thread, but here are the important instructions: https://in-the-sky.org/ephemeris.php - set type to Any and Object to Sirius and make sure it has your area or a town/city within 50miles/80km of where you live, then find when it changes from "Not observable" -> a time, meaning its observable, e.g. for me it says "05:48 until 05:49", since the heliacal rising is when the star is finally visible after being hidden by the sun for a season, we want the first day it is visible. i set the date for somewhere in July and then selected 100 rows of days and scrolled until i found a time in the "observable" column as mentioned above. so ive been meaning to do this poll for a while because my hypothesis is that seattle is the most Tumblr city, likely in the entire world. tumblr has a huge american majority userbase obviously, but just for comparison going forward, only 0.22% of the american population lives in seattle. as of this reblog, this poll is showing 4% of respondents are seattleites. given, this isnt scientific at all, because my blog just has a lot of seattle connections and seattle followers, but it's still an impressive bias

ok so this is The Court Jester with Danny Kaye and it is the best fucking movie i swear. It’s a comedy musical robin hood parody thing about an incompetent moron and his extremely competent ass-kicking girlfriend taking down a tyrannical king and restoring the throne to the rightful heir
-the rightful heir is a baby and they can tell it’s the right baby because of a giant birthmark on his asscheek
-the main character’s only talent is singing and the rest of the pseudo robin-hood group just kinda tolerate him because he repeatedly fucks up
-he gets hypnotized into believing he is this amazing swashbuckling sword fighting hero along the lines of Wesley from the Princess Bride and ends up fighting the villain while snapping in and out of hypnosis
-the vessel with the pestle has the pellet with the poison, the chalice with the palace has the brew that is true “what”
-he stumbles his way through the entire plot and never knows what the hell is going on
-Danny Kaye is the funniest motherfucker you’ve never heard of
-seriously go watch it you wan’t regret it

And a fun tidbit from the filming was that Danny Kaye had never fenced before this film, so he was trained by Basil Rathbone’s stunt double who was also the fight coordinator. Kaye got so proficient so quickly, that Rathbone himself had to do most of the duel scenes between them as the fight coordinator eventually couldnt keep up with him on the more technical parts of the fight. If you watch closely, you can see that Rathbone stays on camera doing the fencing for a much larger percentage of time than he normally did by that point in his career, and Kaye does all but a couple of shots of his own fencing, because HIS double couldnt keep up and make it believable.
I thought at the time and still maintain that Victor's actions make perfect sense if you take the premise that he's just coming off an extended major depressive episode. this is EXACTLY the kind of behavior you would expect to see from someone who has categorically realized "I can't live like this any more" and has just been presented with an alternative that doesn't involve suicide
reminder to visit museums, even if you feel out of place. you feel out of place because there is an established concept of inaccessibility of "high culture" to the masses, purposefully developed to distinguish between social classes.
take up space, read the plaques, get the audioguides. you are just as entitled and right in being there. visit museums, boycott museums, be expressive about your opinions about museums.
a lot of museums are free, or discounted for youth and students. take advantage of that. check your local art museum. check your local history museum. museums are there for you, they are there to educate the public, not to distinguish between class. it isn't a private collection, it's a public exhibit.

The way all the 2020s have done so far have been making me categorically against every new generation of tech that comes out is insane. Like I'm from a technological boom generation, saw the first portable phones, nokias & blackberries & flipphones etc, and the first smartphones, and the first ipods & ipads & tablets in general while still having cassettes & DVD & MP3 players around so I know how all of it work, I had computer classes in high school, I did the transition between home desktop computers to laptops and back to gaming computers. But then they started to put internet in your printer & microwave, everything has ads & AI now and every update is worst than the last. I literally loved technology and they ruined it
