Really really shy about sharing my writing here (but not my art??? for some reason??) BUT I'm really proud of this fic so far. it's by far the longest fic I've written, and I'm honestly spending more time and effort on this than I should buuuuut I'm having so much fun with it. what if you were desperately vulnerable to the call of the ring. what if you had spent your entire life watching your friends and peers being murdered by the dark forces of mordor and then placed in front of you is the only weapon that could possibly vanquish the monster that’s murdered scores of your friends and you just have to not take it. you have to commit yourself to destroying it. and you held out for months until it broke your will as it would have all in the fellowship in the end but there’s a particular shame in being the first. and then you’re so overcome with guilt for what you’ve done and compassion for your friends and a reckless primal need to regain your honor that you run into a suicide charge against an army you have no hope of defeating and you die like all your friends did before you and the last thing you see as the world slips away is the companions you gave your life for being hauled away to certain death. and they look to your coming from the white tower, your people. but you will not return.

OP you put it so well, he would have done what all of us would’ve for those we love. He was a lover before he was a fighter—choosing to play wrestle with the hobbits before training them, looking after the party and making sure no one “less valuable” got left behind. He loved his brother and his people and fuck he even loved his father.

Boromir did his best to resist the ring’s temptation, and its not a moral failing of his that he was misled. We all would have been if our people were being massacred like his. If our family and friends and community were being slaughtered—

Lotr AU where Faramir goes to the council and is part of the fellowship where mostly everything happens the same until Boromir tried to take the ring- Faramir doesn't try to take it, he just went and sat with Frodo while he tries to figure out what to do. Merry and Pippin still get captured, and the fellowship still breaks but this time it's 'cause Faramir goes with Frodo and Sam to guide them through Ithilien while Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli do their Three Hunters thing to find the others.

Sam and Frodo still go into Mordor alone, partially because Gollum/Smeagol really doesn't like Faramir and they need him to find that other path, partly because they know that Faramir's strength if they get caught isn't going to make much of a difference when they're much sneakier without him, and partly because the rangers in the rainbow cave tell him what Gandalf and Pippin are discovering at roughly the same time:

Denethor, drawn more and more into the Palantir, has kept Boromir closer to his side when he would have sent Faramir away. Boromir, in closer proximity and soldier for his people at heart, has slowly realized that his father is Not making decisions that best serve the defense of Gondor and thus the world at large even as he seems to know stuff he couldn't possibly know.

And, being a man of action at heart, our boy embarks on what may be the first truly duplicitous endeavor he's ever taken, like, a few days before Gandalf and Pippin get here: he uses his Favorite Son status to convince Denethor to show him the source of his otherworldly knowledge, grabs the palantir, and sprints away to drop-kick the damn thing off the top of that great jutting rock that divides Minas Tirith.

He is now in the dungeons and Denethor is, if possible, in an even worse mood to greet Gandalf and Pippin than he was in canon (though possibly easier to talk out of his doom complex)

imagine being éowyn in the lord of the rings trilogy. your uncle the king is being mind controlled by an evil wizard until said evil wizard's cooler version shows up and frees him. he is accompanied by an elf, a dwarf, and the hottest guy you've ever met. the hot guy also happens to be 87 years old and maybe still not over his immortal elf girlfriend but he respects and listens to you so you're shooting your shot. your geriatric hotguy situationship turns you down the night before the biggest battle ever then goes ghost hunting in the mountains. you decide to go to battle because you'll either help save your people or die in a really cool and honorable way. you then kill middle earth satan's number one henchman with the power of loophole and being a woman (you are also helped in doing this by a 4 foot tall stoner). then you get to marry faramir. 10/10 no notes my girl went through it all
