Darry has no idea how he speaks over the roaring in his ears. He’s not sure he’s ever felt rage like this before, and if he’s honest with himself, it’s unchartered territory. But his brother is looking at him like he wants to combust, so Darry fights to keep his voice level.

Be Still.

Darry doesn’t remember hanging up the phone. He doesn’t remember calling for Soda. He doesn’t remember getting in the car, or the screeching of his tires as they pull away from the curb outside their house that hasn’t felt like home in a week. All he knows is that for the first time in longer than he ever wants to have it be again, he knows where Ponyboy is.

Darry has been waiting for a week to know what has happened to his little brother. It's quite possibly the longest week of his whole life, and the ending starts with a phone call.

I just got the video from Brent and I'm sitting here in tears, its such a beautiful and special thing and I'm so over the moon that I decided to do it! Despite not being able to justify the extra for faster 'delivery' I've had it on my birthday anyway, which I'm extra thankful for! Brent was so sweet and so kind, and its something that I'm going to hold dearly for a really long time. 💛

If anyone needed any convincing and its something you're able to do, I say go for it!

Sodapop Curtis who wants so badly for his brothers to just be happy. Who splits apart fights and comforts Pony from his nightmares and rubs Darry's back after a long shift.

Who tells Darry he's allowed to feel, he's allowed to grieve, he's allowed to not move on right away. Who begs Ponyboy to say something, do anything, just don't go numb. Feel something.

Who, in the meantime, forgets he's allowed to feel too. At least, when it's not behind closed doors. Forgets he needs to take a break too, between work and splitting up his brothers' fights.

Sodapop Curtis who is stuck. All he wants is for his brothers to be happy, so he works at it and puts in his time and energy for it. But meanwhile, he's working himself to the bone, while he's begging his brothers not to. A living hypocrite, ain't he?

how writing actually works: daydreaming that one scene, creating a half-formed plot in a daze all around it, swearing at characters that don't magic themselves into existence, becoming absolutely obsessed with the story for a solid week, it becomes your entire life, you sit down open a blank word document and write approximately two and a half chapters, lose interest, daydream an entirely new idea for a new story, rinse and repeat

New Horizons

“Ok Dar, give it up.” Pony announces suddenly, his voice laced with exasperation as he slams his book closed. “What’s going on?” “What are you talking about, Ponyboy?” Darry asks, genuinely surprised by his brother’s outburst. “You’ve never relaxed a day in your life. You think sleep is a waste of time, and now we’re taking vacations? What gives?”

The Curtis brothers are hitting the road and taking a vacation! Pony isn't convinced by his brother's motives, and Darry has some news to share.

A Thousand Words

Whispers have been following Ponyboy around all day.

He doesn’t know what his classmates might be whispering about. At first, he thinks he must be imagining things but after a while, he knows it’s directed at him. Stares accompany the words, hushed as they are, and conversations are abruptly ended when he walks into a room or past lockers.

He knows the signs. It isn’t the first time, after all.

When The Night Winds Are Driving On

“What’s spooked ya, kid?” He asks knowingly. Pony immediately wants to deny that anything has spooked him. But he knows there’s no point. It’s not exactly a secret amongst them that his nightmares don’t exactly follow positive experiences in his life. Instead, he gets up and pads out to his bedroom. Soda and Darry wait patiently until he comes back a moment later, a yearbook sitting uncomfortably in his palms. He thumbs through until he finds the page that will serve as an explanation and passes it to his brothers.

It's been a little while since nightmares have plagued the Curtis household. Tonight, they're back with a vengeance.

Ponyboy calling Darry in his junior year of college cause he’s practically falling apart with the stress of everything and needs Darry’s advice. He needs Darry to tell him it ain’t all bad and he’s gonna be just fine cause Darry was just fine. And then Darry has to gently tell Ponyboy that he’s gonna be fine, but Darry can’t offer any more specific advice cause by now, Pony has been in college longer than Darry was.

That’s when it occurs to Ponyboy how truly young his brother was when it all happened. Ponyboy was 20 now and his biggest stress was his upcoming finals. When his brother was 20, he was raising two teenage boys and working two jobs and barely making ends meet. It was shocking how different their lives were at the same age. And it made Ponyboy even more grateful that his brother did all of that and Pony turned out ok. Ponyboy knew now that what Darry did was probably the hardest thing he’d ever done and would ever have to do. And his big brother had done it with no hesitation. He’d worked himself to the bone to make damn sure Ponyboy had a chance at getting out.

Ponyboy knew that now. And so, as his brother answered his call at damn near three o’clock in the morning and couldn’t give him the advice Pony was seeking, Ponyboy’s nerves calmed down. If Darry could raise two boys at his age, he could focus on his classes and studying so he could make his brother proud. Maybe even equally as proud as Darry made him.

The Weight of Loss

"Suddenly I realized, horrified, that Darry was crying. He didn’t make a sound, but tears were running down his cheeks. I hadn’t seen him cry in years, not even when Mom and Dad had been killed. (I remembered the funeral. I had sobbed in spite of myself; Soda had broken down and bawled like a baby; but Darry had only stood there, his fists in his pockets and that look on his face, the same helpless, pleading look that he was wearing now.)"

Ponyboy may think that Darry hadn't cried when their parents had been killed, but he doesn't know about the time between his oldest brother getting the phone call, and arriving back at their house.
