this au goes about the same as canon but he did baseball and technically committed fraud on a bunch of paperwork while going stealth in high school. he's a lot angrier because he feels like he's got something to prove and he's more resentful of taking care of his brothers and being forced back into a feminine caretaker role.
design fun facts! the flannel is his dad's and the rings on his right hand are his parents wedding bands. the ring on the necklace is paul's, and they had a Thing before he transitioned. and maybe after.
no one in tulsa has any idea what being trans is including darry. his brothers are just like "yeah thats darry hes our brother who used to be our sister but we dont talk about that"

I lowkey just keep forgetting to post this 😔✌️ anyways this was the first drawing of Parry I ever did 🥹 I literally screamed seeing the story and had this finished probably half an hour later or something, I don’t quite remember but it was QUICK.
Also fun fact when I saw the tour in January I gave them both a copy of it and they signed my copy and got really excited talking about it 🥹 Travis even put a little heart in between their names!! He also told me to keep my eye out for curtain call cause they try to throw a little Parry in there where they can🥺
"When you're small and scared but there are others who are smaller and more scared" but it's a 19 year old darry holding a sobbing 13 year old ponyboy and a newly 17 year old sodapop to his chest while he dissociates, the ringing in his ears drowning out the sound of the police officer at the front door telling the three brothers that their parents' car was hit by an oncoming train and they were killed on impact as darry mentally starts trying to figure out how he's going to afford to take care of his brothers and keep them out of a boys home.
"When you're small and scared but there are others who are smaller and more scared" but it's a now 20 year old darry calling everyone in the neighborhood asking them if they've seen pony because he didn't come home after his movie was over, with darry trying to keep his voice steady over the phone as to not freak out soda.
"When you're small and scared but there are others who are smaller and more scared" but it was that grueling week that pony ran away to windrixville when darry would stay up until 2, 3, sometimes 4 o'clock in the morning trying to opt between getting enough sleep to perform at least halfway decent at work, and comforting soda who he was pretty sure hated him now for making their baby brother run away, but clung onto darry anyway because they were all that they had, the sobs that wracked soda's body being interrupted every few minutes when the wind blew against the house just right and made it creak and simultaneously made both boys look up expecting to see pony because maybe he had come in through the backdoor or even a window when they weren't looking.
"When you're small and scared but there are others who are smaller and more scared" but it's darry watching pony dissociate after losing two of his best friends the same way that darry dissociated after learning about what happened to their parents and not being able to do anything about it because he never had another adult around to teach him how to properly process grief.
"When you're small and scared but there are others who are smaller and more scared" but it's darry listening to soda break down in the park and realizing that you can live under the same roof as someone for your entire life and still feel a million miles away from them. How could he say that he loved soda if he didn't even know a thing about him? Did soda know darry loved him, or did he harbor feelings of being unwanted the same way that he harbored the grief of losing sandy, mickey mouse, and their parents because smiling and staying out of the way prevented argument?

sodapop curtis who would see cherry valance in the halls while he was still in school, thinking a pretty soc girl like her would never give him the time of day. cherry valance, who occasionally would see soda at the dx talking to a bunch of girls and thought with all that attention, he would never even consider looking at her.
sodapop and cherry, who always find themselves in the middle of some argument despite their extreme hatred towards fights. sodapop and cherry, who are often only perceived by their looks rather than their character. sodapop and cherry, who are really more alike than they think they are.
ugh I need to explode them they make me sick. can be seen as romantic or platonic. im writing a fic based off of this

ps.ps. i have been in the theater scene for about two or three years, done two acting roles and the rest are just tech 💔💔 #icantact
tech crew johnny (maybe props? maybe costumes? idk) and actor pony
johnny was forced to join the school play by ponyboy. he previously had absolutely no interest in it and didn't know anything about theater
ponyboy also didnt know anything about theater but decided it'd be fun to just try it out and audition after hearing good things about the community and he just wanted to try out something new
basically the conversation went like this when pony decided he wanted to join "hey darry soda me and johnny are gonna do the school play this year :>" "we ??" "yeah" they got into a minor argument over it but johnny agrees to join because he likes pony too much for it
he is surprised when learning about tech
ponyboy somehow gets a lead role hes not in ensemble and hes not really happy about it
rehersals just involve them goofing off backstage most of the time
hmo: cherry being an actor too. her and pony are just. the duo. the whole cast is shipping them. in which they are not together but share snacks and scripts
johnny has to witness it, hears the rumors as hes working with other tech crew, and is just ???? the entire time. the tech crew members who've been there for a lot of school plays just tell him its normal and happens every show
rehearsals exhaust them so the second they are sitting down somewhere (could be in a car when theyre picked up after-school or on the couch in the Curtis house) they're both asleep on each other within five minutes
johnny doesn't get as tired as ponyboy though but they're pretty much the same, both almost fall asleep at dinner. ponyboy once face planted into mashed potatoes and soda wouldn't shut up about it for a week
can confirm btw rehearsals are SO FUCKING ENERGY CONSUMING OH MY GOD I GET SO SLEEPY
tech week is the most demanding, johnny doesn't even talk to ponyboy for most of it and instead falls asleep on him 👍👍
stage fright ponyboy #trust
ponyboy has missed a couple of cues during the practice run throughs of the shows and the director yells at him for it every time. hes only missing because hes too busy talking to johnny
"You HAVE to make your cues" "i know :(" "he's too busy kissing that one guy backstage" "cherry shut up 😡"
oops that had romantic implications smh wtv he eventually makes his cues when johnny shoves him away
pre show on opening night pony just disappears. hes not there when ten minutes til places are called. stage fright and anxiety
johnny finds out when an actor is like running past
"hey your boyfriend's missing director is looking for him" "my what" "find curtis??"
the cast also is shipping pony and johnny towards the end of it i forgot to mention that
johnny ends up finding pony in the hallway leading to backstage just panicking and saying "I cant do this :((" eventually after much needed insisting of you've got this i believe in you he calms down and makes it through the show
intermission he took a 2 minute nap 👍
the gang tries to see the show but not all of them come because. most of them cant sit through even a movie. dallas does show up and it was not anticipated by pb+j
during tech bows dallas had yelled "THATS MY KID 😼😼😼" for johnny

after closing night they get ice cream and dont go to school the next day and instead sleep
