digging through my old sketchbooks and love seeing the classic middle school weeb to high school goth pipeline
I took my dad to pride today. After asking him and saying what itt might entail, I made him a free dad hugs sign:
While walking there, a lot of people pointed at him and said it was a cute idea. They were right.
My (and his) personal highlights were:
A guy hugging him and saying something in Ukrainian (bc of the flag, probably)
Someone asking him if they can call him "daddy" (I had to explain to him why I started laughing. He now knows.)
Someone giving him a rose
Someone kissing him on the cheeck
A lot of people seeing me standing around awkwardly while there was a line forming in front of him and hugging me too
A guy my dad's age hugging him with tears in his eyes
A kid my age shouting "I don't have a father!", Running towards and almost tackling him
A guy in a fetish-related dog mask hugging him and clinging to him like a lifeline
Two children between eight and ten initiating a group hug with him and giggling the entire time
Everyone thanking him afterwards and a lot of people saying he gives the best hugs in the world. One guy said he'd never been hugged like that before
This guy in a moving lorry shouting and making the lorry stop driving to get a hug from my dad:
My dad said that the majority of people hugging him were either older (25-60) queer men or younger (15-25) trans people. He really loved the experience and felt like a lot of the people, especially the older guys really needed it.
Anyway we're definitely doing this again next year

song: 好久不见 - Lil Jet
typewriter!
I love the orchestra trying and failing to maintain a straight face throughout
Exactly. These people had to rehearse at least a few times all at once yet when it's nkt their turn to play they still look at that guy with the typewriter as if he was the most fascinating thing they have ever seen.
My husband's wind ensemble played this song when he was in high school! you can do it with normal auxillery percussion, but it's so much more fun if you do it with a real typewriter
now that is a writing mood
they were really like, the only reasonable approach to this piece is to insert a clown at the center of the orchestra
So peaceful Souvenir. A brother singing ancient Andalusian song in Al-hambra palace.
Unmute
The right amount of melancholy
This is one of my most favorite Andalusian muwashshahat (an Arabic poem that’s specifically written to be sung). It was written in the 3rd century by an Arab poet from Granada, so it’s not very far fetched that the song has been sung at some point in that very palace centuries ago.
These are the lyrics in Arabic and English, in case anyone’s interested.
When he appeared with a sway in his walk My darling infatuated me with his beauty Oh, my fate and my confusion Who will have mercy when I complain Of anguish in love Except for the holder of beauty?
لما بدا يتثنى حبي جماله فتننا وعدي و يا حيرتي من لي رحيم شكوتي فى الحب من لوعتي إلا مليك الجمال

i think it's fucked up that there are plants that decided they wanted to eat meat
a plant's job is literally to just exist but the venus flytrap chose violence
what if i gently laid an uncooked steak on the soil for it to absorb
my tree biology teacher fed her calcium-deficient tree a whole-ass bbq rib bone - she stuck it in the ground near the base of the tree (after eating the meat off of it), and when she came back to collect it to show the tree biology class it was GONE
the tree had grown a root up through the center of it & out through the sides
also there’s an old story about a man who was buried beneath a tree, and when they went to exhume the body it had been completely absorbed by the tree’s roots- you could see the shape of the body in the way the roots grew, splitting up for clearly defined arms and legs. trees will absolutely eat a steak if you bury it & they need the nutrients.
that’s horrifying! thank you
new solarpunk trope to go with "compost the rich"
this is mycorrhizal action at work!
in beneficial "mycorrhizal relationships," the mycelium (the vegetative part of fungi, a mass of branching, thread-like hyphae) of the mycorrhizal fungus absorbs and shares many nutrient sources their partner plants cannot - especially minerals and protein found in, say, steak or other dead animals:
(image from Wikipedia)
by wrapping roots in their mycelium, fungi make their tree friends healthier at the small cost of sugar, making both healthier. that's why the roots of healthy trees (and lots of other plants) often have a white coating
this mutualistic relationship between trees and fungi is why I find using mushroom compost works so effectively to establish baby trees and gardens. no need to add (often poisonous) manufactured nitrogen fertilizer when you can just let nature do its thing
for healthy trees, just add billionaires
(and mycelium)
They cheered for the baby and booed everyone else. This is the greatest thing
(i saw this on twitter but hadn’t seen it on tumblr so i needed to post it. pls watch this)

Mongolians are cool because they’ve merged their traditional and modern ways of life so rather than having poverty due to losing all their important skills they just live in their yurts with their cows and 827474874mbs internet
sure their GDP in dollars is low but when you can survive like your anscestors did it doesn’t mean anything, nothing wrong with adding a motorcycle and wifi into the mix
Everyone should live like their ancestors did 1000 years ago but with the addition of wifi tbh
Adapt. Survive.
this is the single most inspiring piece of information I have yet to come across in all my moments in this world
where is that picture
