I'm just saying, if you're going to worldbuild magic being a "raw, primal force, akin to and interweaving with nature itself" you gotta explain to me why animals don't use it
I know the normal answer is "they just aren't smart enough for it" but idk I've seen enough media where a character uses a spell in a moment of brain-off panic ilI feel like animals could probably stumble into a spell or two like, accidentally
Also how funny would it be to see a completely normal regular bear cast magic missile outta nowhere
Also there is no way ravens wouldn't figure out spells, tbh
They're smart fuckin birds, I believe in them
Either through observing or just figuring shit out ravens could 100% learn how to cast spells I'm sure of it
Dogs can also cast Magic Missile but every time they do the projectile is shaped like a bone or a stick and they chase after it
Fantasy setting where every species of animal has One Fucked Up Trick exactly like in medieval bestiaries (e.g., panthers hypnotising their prey with sweet breath, pelicans reviving the dead with their willingly shed blood, etc.), except these are actually learned magic spells passed down from parent to offspring, so different populations of the same animal in different regions might have a different spell.
(If a species is domesticated you can teach it any spell you want, as long as you start 'em young enough; every breed of dog has a different "standard" spell, and knowing the "wrong" one is considered both a grave departure from breed standards and a potential violation of animal husbandry ethics.)
I like magic crows ig.
I know the normal answer is "they just aren't smart enough for it" but
but even then, if you have an evolutionary theory of creatures at all you need to account for how only a few species could adapt to it. Like if such a force existed you bet your ass that the first creatures to figure it out would inflict massive evolutionary pressure on every other creature to get with the program. like yeah a bear from modern Earth might not be smart enough but consider a bear that natively evolved on Magical Earth for millions of years. like. dude will be growing magic circles directly in his pelt or some shit.

Lately I've been thinking about how if I had a girlfriend I probably would want to develop some mechanisms for getting past "Fine" with regard to "How are you?"
It's fine enough for smalltalk but if I care a lot about someone I would like to understand the situation more precisely. One idea is, "Oh good, you're alive -- how are you thinking?" or "Okay that's the first maslow hierarchy down, next is... uh... Do you feel safe?" Probably followed by wandering thoughts about the placement of the nearest fire extinguisher.
But like what if the TV trope happens and they say "fine" but it seems all angry like, they must be mad at me, and how do I proceed on that? I'd rather just like, communicate, but if they don't want to and I don't want to enroach on them but I also want to help, what words do I use then? What if they're cleaning and I ask "what do you want help with?" and they say "I'm fine?"
One phrase that I've experimented with on coworkers is "You seem [emotion]." Since I'm bad at labeling emotions it often seems to inspire interesting results, either corrections or "mood" which does seem to lighten said mood.
For that latter scenario, I guess there's always "Yeah I know you don't need help but what do you want help with."
But I'm still struggling to work out something for the angry "fine" when they're on the couch and on the phone and maybe don't want to talk. Maybe just "Would you rather I be in another room?" is enough. Maybe "What does fine feel like right now?" Maybe "I'm bad at emotions please help." idk
just on my mind ig
"bears repeating" and "time flies" are two kinds of creatures that fill similar ecological niches

the sad thing about keep talking and nobody explodes is it's hard to find pairs that are very very good at it, because the optimal strat is to memorize the manual

You may be wondering how I got into this situation. That's good. Keep wondering. If you pay close attention to the rest of this movie and employ your critical thinking skills, you may find that the answer unfolds as it goes along. Sometimes it's good not to know yet, and to wonder. Sometimes that's the entire point.
