The DnD fandom at the time was very heavily male and very misogynistic. Marisha Ray, Keyleth's player, was the youngest person at the table and was, like, CONSTANTLY dogpiled for Keyleth's actions, leading a LOT of people to be mad about Keyleth in general. She was a naive, insecure character who grew and changed, and a lot of the writing changes in The Legend of Vox Machina have made this arc clearer. I've seen some people still be mad about Keyleth in TLoVM, but nowhere NEAR as bad as it was in 2015-16. All her decisions made sense for the character, but since Marisha wasn't, like, minmaxing or metagaming, a lot of people were like "why would Keyleth do this, is she stupid??"
She's finding her way in the world!! She's doing her best!!! She's incredibly powerful and really comes into her own as the story goes on. There's only a couple episodes of TLoVM Season 4 out right now but the sheer difference in her confidence versus insecurity from Season 1 to 4 is incredible.
When Critical Role first aired, a lot of fans said she was annoying or criticized the choices she made. People also brought up small mistakes she made more often than they would for male characters .If she made a mistake it was the worst thing ever but if a male character made the same mistake it wasn't even mentioned
I think she's really cool! She actually had an arc about overcoming insecurities and criticism, which is ironic given fan behavior but did result in arguably the most thematically interesting dragon fight we got to see
It's totally okay if you don't want to include her because a lot of the hate towards her also goes directly towards the person playing her being "too new to dnd" or "not nerdy enough". That being said: A lot of people think Keyleth is childish or annoying, when really that's the point of the character. She's been thrown into a position of leadership way sooner than she should've been. Her people live for hundreds of years, she's still an awkward teen within her society.
Druids are awesome. Nature magic is awesome. She's a wholesome little bean until she gets truly pissed off. Is a cinnamon roll that could kill you. And everyone in critical role is the epitome of poly panic. (Maybe not in canon but in our hearts)
Iris West:
Fandom calls her a bitch and annoying for daring to challenge Barry and to be his love interest while being a black woman.
She is sweet but doesn't take shit from her father or love interest and she is a great journalist and a terrible cook (iconic).

Instead of a cutesie reference to film censorship it was an explicit statement of defiance of Maryland's criminalization gay sex, which was not repealed until 2002. This wasn't a guy saying "Oh they can't put what I do in the movies according to a completely voluntary industry code" he was saying "The State of Maryland wants to put me in jail for being gay and having gay sex."
It wasn't a guy being cheeky about sex in an ambiguous, cute way. It was a man stating, in no uncertain terms, that a whole state of the United States considered him a criminal for being homosexual.
To clarify for those who don't know, "free the nipple" isn't about going braless, it's about going topless
No shirt, no bra, completely bare torso, just like cis men are allowed to
It's about desexualizing breasts and "female presenting nipples" and not being criminalized for our bodies if we want to go topless because it's a million damn degrees out. This was a popular growing movement that was still widely known a decade ago!
And the fact that not wearing a bra is so discouraged and stigmatized that people think the movement was about being able to go braless under your shirt in public rather than about being able to not wear a shirt at all says a lot about how far we've backslid in the past decade
The thing about the "all evil fictional women from myth and legend are misunderstood and in reality their story was retold to make them evil because men were afraid of their power" trend is that it's low-key also misogynistic to assume women are incapable of being terrible people purely due to being women.
Aliens: 3/10. What if there was one (1) remnant from mass effect adromeda and it took a whole movie to kill it, only to finally get taken out by a bulldozer?
Military: 1/10. Tried so hard to make it look cool, only made it look lame as fuck
Yaoi: 4/10. It was there, but it was between blood brothers so it was really weird
Aliens: 6/10. Interesting design, in retrospect could be a metaphor for data centers, had a UFO that was made out of guns. Could be a 10/10 depending on your feelings about squirting
Aliens: 7/10. Promising design, thought it looked like a mindflayer at first, but tbh not explored very much nor were the aliens shown to be as interesting as the alien's ships were
Military: 5/10. The Military(TM) wasn't as big of an entity here as in other movies of this genre! Certainly a tool of the story, but felt far less like overt propaganda
Yaoi: 9/10. Will Smith's call sign was "Big Daddy"
Music: 8/10. Classic 90s action movie score 🤌
Did the token female soldier survive?: -1/10. There was NO token female solider (this movie came out in 1996)
Is Rihanna in this?: Rihanna was 8 years old when this came out. No.
