There’s this old man named Benny, he’s a carpenter in his eighties that makes beautiful cedar chests and furniture. We’ve just recently started buying from him for our store. He’s easily become one of my favorite people we work with and maybe just one of my favorite people in general. He’s the strongest man I know, of any age. He also is so feisty and I love his personality to bits. Not to mention, he’s incredibly talented. He also always forgets my name and he calls me “muscles” because I never wait for him to help me load any of the furniture and I always do it all myself (but I mean in my defense this man looks like the wind could break him, how the hell he’s as strong as an ox I do not know).
He came into the store while I was working yesterday and we were discussing cabinet knobs because I’m looking for a very certain kind and he was offering to just give me his entire collection. I told him he was way too nice and he told me the story of his kindness and it’s just mega sticking with me. I can tell this will sit with me for a long time. “I always want everyone to know me as being gentle. I worked in the church with the kids and they’re always watching. I always wanted them to grow up being gentle and kind so I need to be gentle and kind. Whenever there’s a little one around you, they’re always watching. You have to love your neighbor. Love your neighbor like you love yourself, and you have to love yourself. Love is so important”. Idk y’all he was just hitting me so hard. He wasn’t preaching anything to me but to just be a good person. Just do the good stuff. Just be good.
He reminds me so much of my granddaddy Chuck that I lost in 2014. My granddaddy shined with goodness. There was a radiance from him that you don’t see often, I’ve only met a few people like that in my life. But Benny is radiant. And there’s comfort in being in the presence of people that make you want to be a better person than you were the day before. I hope someday I’m like that for someone else. I hope someday it becomes more natural for me to be The Good. I feel like if I keep surrounding myself with those type of people, eventually it’ll roll off me the way it does them too. :) here’s to me making a vow that even though I always love my neighbor, sometimes I don’t always show it and I will start loving louder. Love your neighbor loudly, be gentle and kind ❤️
Benny died almost a year ago and the night I found out I bawled so hard.
Benny had been having chest pains and had been going to the cardiologist regularly the year prior to his death. He showed his cardiologist and his nurses our shops social media and videos and would point to the shelves and things he had custom made for our store. He was so proud of us and proud to be apart of the shop with us. I learned a lot from Benny and I will always remember him. Thank you for your kindness, ya old carpenter. Thank you for always loving your neighbor.
