You would be lying if you said it hadn’t been thrilling to sneak up behind them and pluck the hat off their head. They were so attached to it, it was funny! Of course, sentimentality was one thing- but really, the way they had paused, reaching up to touch their head as if confused at the sudden loss had been far too comical for you to even consider not laughing at. But the moment they had turned, had called out your name-
You ran.
You had sprinted across the dock back towards safety, hat clutched in your hand as they followed after you. But you were faster- always had been quicker on your feet. You scurried up the gangplank, avoiding collisions with your fellow shipmates as you made your way below deck to your quarters. You thought you were safe, you really had! Taking a minute to catch your breath, you settled the hat atop your own head with a grin.
Success!
That is, until the door opened. You turned, eyes widening in surprise at the sight of the owner of said hat, leaning against the door with an expression that lingered between amused and… Something else. Something darker. You suddenly realized you had cornered yourself in your haste to escape- and now, you had nowhere to run.

Your heart hammered in your chest as Ace chuckled, arms crossed over his chest as you leaned back against the opposite wall. “You had your fun,” he spoke softly, holding a hand out to you. “Now gimme my hat back.”
“No.” You replied defiantly, instead putting the hat on your own head. You turned, studying your reflection in the mirror on the wall, tilting your head to and fro as a smile curved your lips. “I think it looks better on me, really,” you couldn’t help but tease.
“There’s a rule ‘bout wearin’ someone else’s hat, y/n.” Ace sighed, stepping in, closing the door behind himself- and locking it, something that had your breath faltering. A rule? What was he talking about? It was just a hat! Even so, he crossed the room with a few strides, settling behind you. His hands smoothed across your hips, his head dipping down to press chaste kisses along your throat. “You wear the hat, you ride the sailor,” he murmured against the shell of your ear, his gaze finding your own in the reflection.
Hunger. That’s what that expression was; his beautiful brown eyes dark in the soft light of the room. Your heart stuttered in its beat as he kept your gaze locked with his own, lips pressing over where your carotid artery lay in your throat. “Oh,” you whispered back, blinking slowly as his hands wandered. Fingers plucked at the edge of your shirt, dragging it up slowly with his fingers as they trailed heated paths across your skin. His Devil Fruit ability- oh, how you loved that.
“Whattya say, y/n?” He asked, biting at your shoulder gently, not enough to cause pain but certainly enough to draw a gasp out of your lips. You nodded mutely, transfixed by your reflections as he grinned wolfishly over your shoulder. “That’s my baby.” A damn near growl as he tugged your back against his front, subtle grinds of his hips giving you a clear image of just how much he wanted you.
You were suddenly glad you decided to steal his silly little hat.

It had been a celebration. Another successful show, another successful tithe paid from the townsfolk. One of those rare times where your Captain was genuinely happy, laughing with his crew as the bonfire burned brightly on the beach. But you weren’t there- no, you were sitting on the throne in the center ring of the Big Top, orange tricorn settled atop your head as you waited.
You didn’t have to wait for long.
“Y/n,” Buggy called out as he sauntered in, his gaze settling on your form sitting in his chair, wearing his hat. The sight had his breath faltering, had his mouth suddenly dry. You looked damn good sitting there, almost as good as he did. Your legs kicked up over the arm, your lips curved into a cheeky grin. His hat… His hat on your head.
He approached slowly, the sounds of the celebration fading behind him as he reached the throne. “Look at you! All comfortable in my chair, wearing my hat.” He muttered, one hand grabbing your chin, forcing your head up and back to meet his gaze. The other settled on the top of the throne as he leaned his weight against it, hovering over you.
“Your hat?” You countered with faux confusion. You reached up, touching the tricorn. “I could’ve sworn this was my hat.”
“Brat.” Buggy hissed as you grinned.
You leaned up, sitting upright as your legs shifted down from the arm of the couch. “Yeah? Am I?” You continued to taunt, watching as your lover’s gaze brightened with the game you had decided to play.
“Yaknow, there’s this funny little rule that comes with wearing someone else’s hat.” His thumb brushed against your lower lip. You leaned into the touch, gaze flickering down to his painted smile.
“What is it?” You breathed as he shifted closer. When you’d stolen his hat, you’d let his hair down. Aquamarine tresses spilled over his shoulders, falling forward to cloak you, giving an odd form of privacy as his lips ghosted against your own.
“Wear the hat, ride the Captain.” Buggy murmured as he captured your lips in a kiss. Paint smeared against your skin as you reached up, tangling your fingers in his hair, drawing out a pleased hum from him as he pressed closer.
You pulled back with a nip to his lip, watching the way he crumbled beneath you so easily. “Ride the Captain, eh?” The thought set a fire in you. You rose to your feet, swapping places with a hand against his chest, shoving him down into his throne. “I’ve always wondered what it would be like to fuck you here.”
“Shit,” he chuckled, hands settling on your waist as you took your place on his lap. “Keep the hat on.”
“Yes, Captain.”

You felt like royalty as you ran through the halls of the castle. Perhaps it was the romance novels you’d read over the years, but there was something particularly thrilling about running through corridor after corridor with the tricorn clutched to your chest. You found yourself in the library, chest rising and falling with deep breaths as you turned to face the doors. Any moment now, Dracule would walk in.
It was worth it. Grabbing his tricorn the moment he’d docked at the island, running as fast as your legs could carry you back to the castle. You worried your lip as you looked down at the black leather, fingers brushing against the stitching. After a moment’s hesitation, you raised the hat- and settled it atop your head.
The doors swung open.
“Darling,” Mihawk drawled. Yoru wasn’t on his back; his coat had been discarded, no doubt left by the front entryway. He sighed, taking in the sight of you in the moment. Cheeks flushed, hat perched atop your head; you were bathed in the orange glow of the fireplace. The sun had already set behind you; no light spilled through the large windows.
A piece of art, you were.
“I believe you have something that belongs to me.” Slow steps drew him closer, even as you took shorter steps backwards- until you stumbled, ending up on your rear on the rug before the fireplace. Mihawk chuckled as he stood over you, arms crossed over his chest.
You found your words at last, grinning up at your lover. “I dunno what you’re talking about.” Cheekily, you leaned back on your elbows as Dracule knelt, reaching out to cup your cheek gently. “All I have is this shirt… And this hat.”
“... That’s all?” His gaze flickered down to your legs- bare, he realized. When had you stripped your trousers? He was certain you had been wearing them when you met him at the dock. “There’s a certain tradition when you wear another’s hat.”
“Tell me about it.” You sighed as his hand smoothed along your calf, gently massaging the muscle. He moved slowly, crawling over your form as his hands left your leg and cheek, balancing his weight over you. He dipped his head, stealing a kiss from you that had your head swimming by the end of it. The ghost of a brush of his tongue against your lip before he parted; you leaned forward, chasing him.
“Wear the hat,” he murmured as he shifted, arm curling around your waist. In a movement too quick to track, he’d rolled you both, settling you on his lap as he settled on the rug. His fingers gripped your thighs, dangerously high to rucking up your- no, that was certainly his- shirt. “Ride the pirate.”
“Oh,” you breathed, mind growing fuzzy with the lust that was beginning to course through your veins. You shift your hips slowly, feeling your lover respond in kind. A groan pulled free of you as your hands settle on his chest, fingers gripping at his shirt. “Oh, I think I like that one.”
“Good.”

It was hard to hide in a submarine. This was your first- no, second- mistake. Taking your Captain’s hat was the first mistake. Hiding in the submarine was the second. And the third? Deciding to add insult to injury by hiding in their own quarters. Was it the brightest of ideas? No. But Shachi wasn’t going to let you get out of the bet without consequences, and like hell you were going to cough up five hundred berries.
So, you stole Law’s hat. And then had run for your damn life.
You could hear the heavy footsteps of their boots as they approached. You panicked- and tugged the white hat on as the door opened, revealing the frustrated face of Law. They paused, brow furrowing at the sight of you standing in the middle of their quarters. “The boiler room would have been a better hiding place,” they taunted sarcastically, closing the door behind themself before leaning back against it.
“I uh, I panicked?” You shrugged, cheeks flushing with embarrassment. You reached up, patting the hat on your head. “I get why you wear it. ‘S comfy.”
“It looks good on you.” They admitted softly, pushing off the door to cross the room, settling before you. Their hand raised, brushing a strand of hair back behind your ear. “Almost as good as it looks on me,” they finished, lips curving into that signature cocky grin that had you stomach twisting.
You reached out, settling your hands on their chest, “There’s this lil’ thing,” words barely above a whisper; they had to focus on you to really hear. “This lil’ rule I remember learnin’ about.”
“And what would that be?” They asked just as softly, hands settling on your hips, drawing you closer, pressing your form against their own. Their hands squeezed slowly, the pressure enough to draw a pleased sigh from you.
You leaned in, lips brushing against their ear. “If I wear my Captain’s hat- I have to ride them.” A nip against the shell of their ear had a shudder dancing across them. You could have sworn a soft ‘fuck’ had slipped free from them. “Is that right?”
They pulled back, hand coming up to grip your jaw. A mischievous light had settled in their gaze as they studied you. You weren’t sorry; not a single speck of sympathy lingered in your expression, in your words, in your teasing. “You are, y/n-ya.” They rasped as they leaned in, stealing a kiss. Their teeth grazed your lip as they guided you backwards, until the back of your knees hit the bed. You sank slowly, but they didn’t part- not until you pulled back, panting.

You had managed to stumble into your quarters on the Liberal Hind, only to realize that oh- well, shit. That’s a mistake. You curse yourself softly as you try to figure out how to get out of this mess. It had been a silly idea. You hadn’t seen your Captain laugh in a while- and thought that hey, stealing the hat would be funny!
Apparently not, given the yell that had come from him as you sprinted away.
Your heart skipped more than one beat as the door to your quarters swung open, revealing the tall form of your Captain, X-Drake. You swallowed roughly around nothing as he studied you, brow furrowed. He ran a hand through his hair with a huff, stepping in and closing the door behind himself.
Slowly, you raised the hat- and placed it on your own head.
Worth it, you thought to yourself as your lover’s eyes widened in shock as he turned around once more. “Missing something?” You teased, arms crossing over your chest as he studied you.
“That’s my hat.” He stated simply, taking a step forward. “Why did you take it?”
“Maybe I want it.” You shrugged, watching the way his eye twitched at the blatant insubordination you showed. Former Marines, always so strict. You worried your cheek as you glanced away. “I think it looks good, don’t you?”
“It…” He faltered, drawing in a slow breath. “It does look good, yes.” He crossed over to you, reaching out a hand to grasp the hat- only to pause. You were at port. The crew was working on supply runs. Alone on the ship. His hand lowered to tilt your chin up gently, his demeanor shifting as he tilted your head to the left- and then the right. “It suits you well,” he murmured, voice damn near molten gold with the way it poured over you.
You shuddered, gaze rising to meet his own. “What’s that old saying… Wear the hat, ride the Captain?”
His jaw clenched; the hand on your chin flexed. Got him. “You’re nothing but trouble,” he groaned as his hands smoothed down your sides, hooking in the waistband of your trousers, tugging you closer to himself. “You need to be disciplined. Stealing from your captain…”
“Then do it,” you whispered, leaning in to ghost a kiss along his jaw. “After all, I did steal.”
your relationship is a little complicated since he's a bird and your human/fae. you do spend a lot of time together when he is human but there are still times when he is a bird.
in these times he's always seen perched on your shoulder, nuzzling into your neck and hair. you have to spend at least an hour a week picking feathers from your hair (he laughs in the background at his masterpiece)
even though he has a human side now, his bird instincts sometimes show through. he will randomly show up wherever you live with rocks, gems, sticks, and random shiny objects that he found on his way to you. this happens both when he's in human and bird form.
related to the headcanon above, you have a small box where you keep all of the gifts he gives you. you showed it to him once and he almost cried because he didn't think you'd treasure them like this.
CUDDLES. this man would love his cuddles. whether its cuddling in your hair or on your lap, while you stroke his feathers or sitting under a shady tree with his head in your lap or yours in his.
since he was a bird for his life you would probably have to teach him things like writing and reading, he would have his head over your shoulder while he hugged you into his lap, listening as you helped him read the words on the pages.
aurora is in full support of your relationship. She secretly shows diaval romantic human gestures that he later trys with you. although the first time he tried to dance with you he stepped on your feet a lot.
the cutest little kisses. whenever he kisses you he goes completely red and shy. poor baby stutters so much.
the times when Maleficent won't turn him to his human form he well squawk in her ear and annoy her until she finally agrees, always grumbling about how she would turn him into a worm if she didn't need him. meanwhile smiling slightly as he walks to go find you.

To y/n everyday was the same. They would wake up, go to work on their farm only stopping to have a small meal before heading back, though recently a group of peasant women had moved near their house. She had first met them at the market. They were buying fabrics when two of them had started to bicker, which in the end led to one of them being shoved into a fruit stand and splattering the product all over. Safe to say they had gotten themselves banned. Feeling a bit of pity towards them, y/n had bought the fabrics they were planning to purchase and had been able to catch up to their wagon and give them the items. In return they had let them come back to their cottage and have some of there home grown vegetables as a thank you. As the weeks went on y/n had continued to bring them fabrics, flour and other things that they had needed from the market. Y/N would even help watch there orphan child Aurora when they had needed a nap or had to do the chores of the house. One day y/n had been on her way home after delivering a few bags of flower to the cottage when a man with messy black hair and scruffy clothing had fallen onto the path in front of them. "Are you alright?" asked y/n concerned for the stranger. "well nothing feels broken so I'm going to assume yes" he says standing up, brushing the dirt off of his black clothing. "I haven't seen you before, Are you new?" y/n questioned, not recognizing the handsome face of the stranger before her. "I've lived here my whole life, I've just stuck to the forest, less people" he answers. "makes sense, do you have a name?" y/n asks. "Diaval, and yours?" Diaval replies "I'm y/n its a pleasure to meet you Diaval" y/n says doing a small curtsy. "The pleasures all mine" he says kissing their hand. "i must get back before dark, I do hope to see you again" y/n says before walking off to their small farm a blush gracing their cheeks from Diaval's gesture.

It was over. Everything was over. You were to be wed, and it terrified you. You knew this was going to happen. You were a firstborn noble. Of course you were to be wed for the betterment of your family, but you had been trying to ignore that fact. The thought of getting married felt insulting. You could be everything and more without a ring on your finger, without a stranger by your side, vowed to stay with you for the rest of your lives. You were already respected within your fathers company, you had connections (many from your parents but still), and you had achieved a lot already with marketing alone.
Unfortunately, you were not exempt from your full responsibility, and that was marrying into another noble family. To make it even worse, you were marrying into the Shroud family. Reclusive, cursed, and filthy rich. They were the world's top engineers, and your parents way into the top of the top. Due to certain circumstances, you were to move into their mansion after the marriage. As one of the top engineers, the Shroud family were head of security for the state (some families argued it was actually for the country), and it was one of the reasons for their seclusion.
Your first time meeting the Shroud heir, your jaw nearly dropped. Thankfully you kept your composure, but he was surprisingly handsome. Fiery blue hair that fell to his shins, dark blue tinted lips, bright yellow eyes, razor sharp teeth…and his terrible manners. It was oddly charming though. The way his eyes darted to anything but you and your parents, his hands that constantly fidgeted with his sleeves, and the way he tried to curl into himself. It was everything you were taught not to be, and it was somewhat refreshing. You thought you’d be annoyed, years of training and being reprimanded for never being perfect enough for high society seemed all for nought. Someone in a similar position seemed to have no such training, no such hardships, never forced to bear it and grin through a situation. But no, instead you found yourself…impressed. He seemed to have gotten far even without the social aspect. You suppose that's what happens when your family keeps to themselves, their ingenuity speaking for them.
As your family and the Shrouds conversed about preparations for the wedding, you simply sipped your cup of tea. Eyeing the man you sat across from. Your parents had mentioned that you’d become the face of their company in a sense. Yes, they had people who made deals on their behalf, but having a head of the company and family would look better. So not all your training was worthless…but it still left you feeling lost. You were always told that you were to be perfect, the way you speak, the way you walk, the way you sit, if you were any less you would be seen as a fool and ridiculed. But it seemed that was not going to be the case, as you will be holed up with the Shroud family for the foreseeable future. So much for inheriting your fathers company. He always favored your younger sibling anyways.
“We should give them some time to get to know each other before the wedding,” Mrs. Shroud said, gaining your attention. You watched her curiously, seeing her smile brightly. “Our boy is a bit shy when it comes to people, and he hasn’t met many people his own age. This would be a perfect opportunity to let them bond and have a better start in their relationship.”
You tried your hardest to keep your shoulders untense. It wasn’t the Shroud’s fault for your uneasiness, but you could see your freedom inch farther and farther away from you. It doesn’t matter how pretty the young man was, it was still a chain that would keep you tied down to a future that was never your own.

A week. That was how long you were to stay with the Shroud’s. Your wedding would be in a month, and both Mrs. Shroud and your mother agreed that you were to stay at the Shroud residence so you weren’t just thrusted into it after the wedding. To your utter dismay, your soon to be husband booked it the second you were dismissed. Mr. and Mrs. Shroud politely welcoming you before leaving to attend their duties. You were left to wander the giant gloomy residence alone. Okay, maybe not completely alone, a maid guided you to your new room, but still. The place was giant, unfamiliar, and you felt completely alone. At least at your home, you knew the servants, you had your sibling, and you had your pets your parents begrudgingly let you get.
You scanned your new room. Your new home. There were some book shelves that held multiple books. The room was dimly lit, in fact you noticed the entire mansion was dimly lit. Blue flames flickering in the lamps that lit the grand home. Due to the importance of the Shroud family, they were hidden, their home underground, but it was still grandiose. Pushing against the mattress, you noted its stiffness, but not to the point of uncomfortableness. The sheets were soft, and the blankets plush, at least you wouldn’t be completely uncomfortable, but definitely lonely.
Before you could stew much longer, there was a knock on your door. Opening it, a small figure was revealed. They resembled the Shroud family, the flaming hair reminding you of your suitor, but a metal mask covering his mouth, in fact, his entire body seemed to be formed of metal. Despite that, his closed eyes showed that he was smiling.
“Hello!” He waved excitedly. “My name is Ortho Shroud. You’re the one to marry my older brother Idia, right?”
You blinked, heart beating a bit faster. Ortho Shroud, he had died when he was just ten years old. You had heard pleasantly of rumors whispered throughout many gatherings, and all pointed to that curse that was placed on the Shroud’s. Sure, the Shroud’s were engineering and magical experts, but this was a level never seen before. Snapping out of your inner turmoil, you shifted into your poised polite self you were always taught to be.
“A pleasure to meet you, Ortho,” You spoke politely and bowed your head. “I am indeed the one to be wed to Idia.”
Ortho’s bright demeanor only brightened further, he was nearly jumping up and down, “It’s nice to meet you too! I’m so glad Idia’s making a new friend! He’s always holed in his room and working on something or another.”
“I see,” You nodded. “I’m not exactly sure how I’ll get to know him if he doesn’t leave his room.”
“Oh,” Ortho blinked. “I suppose that would be a problem. But I’m here to help! Don’t worry, you and him will be best friends in no time!”

You had grown close to the young Shroud quickly. He spent the most time with you, and tried to get you and Idia to talk through the most unhinged ways. The first day Ortho had basically shoved you into the poor man's room, blabbing about how you were interested in his work. Idia practically screamed at your intrusion and you felt your cheeks flush at the entire situation. This was highly inappropriate, but all you could do was merely follow Ortho like a lost puppy.
“I apologize for the intrusion,” You finally spoke up after Ortho left. Idia merely stared at you like you were a rabid animal that was ready to attack. It was a situation you were unprepared for. You were used to the aristocrats who smiled to your face and told nasty rumors behind your back, the nobles who thought they were better than everyone else, all smug and confident. Not meek, not anxious, not someone like him.
“I…I am intrigued by your contraptions though,” You spoke, chest puffed out and a trained smile resting on your lips. You weren’t to show weakness, that was a one way ticket to smearing your image, and you couldn’t afford the Shroud family to cancel your plans. “How do they work, exactly?”
You heard his mumbled insult, saying you wouldn’t understand, but you pretended like you didn’t, your smile feeling just a bit more strained as you clenched your fist behind your back. The thing you hated most was being underestimated. You were smarter than people thought, and you always managed to surprise them with your wit. Of course, you knew you weren’t on the same level as the Shroud’s, but you weren’t as stupid as people thought.
Before you could stew some more in your bitterness, Idia moved to show you his work bench. There were some odd devices, but he explained their purpose and the current trouble he had. The more he talked, the more confident he got in his speech. He clearly thrived when he was talking about his work. If anything, you were a bit impressed with his genius. And when he mentioned he was stumped on what to fix on his current project, you walked over and observed the device. You, with no mechanical background whatsoever, stared at the contraption for a bit, admiring the handiwork.
“Wouldn’t you need to add a wheel here?” You asked, pointing to where the contraption kept stopping due to its limited movement. It was a small detail, but one you thought the Shroud heir would pick up on. Idia blinked, staring at the device like he just unlocked all the mysteries of the universe. It was then that you noticed the dark bags under his eyes and the manic look one gets when awake for too long.
“When was the last time you slept?” Not a polite question, but your worry overpowered your training.
“Uh…” Idia trailed off, eyes glancing at the clock on his wall. “Lost count.” Now it was your turn to blink in confusion. Sure, with no windows and being underground, you were bound to forget the time…but had he even slept in the past twenty four hours?
“Then I’d recommend some rest,” You replied, glancing over to his messy bed.
“But then I’ll lose my steam and-”
“That’s already seemed to have happened,” You chimed in, a teasing smile taking over. “You won’t get far without a good meal and some sleep. Should I alert the servants to make you a meal?”
“No,” Idia muttered. “I’m not hungry.”
Pausing, you were unsure what to do. Idia looked longingly at his work bench before sighing and standing up.
“I’ll leave you to it,” You nodded, sending him a small wave. “Have a good sleep.”
“You too,” Idia mumbled as you exited. When he got into bed he nearly cried when he realized it was still technically the middle of the day and you very much were not going to sleep as well.

The second day you found yourself alone. Wanting to get used to the layout of the Shroud residence, you found yourself wandering the halls. It was a bit eerie. The flickering candles, the stone walls, the lack of servants, it was a haunting vibe. It wasn’t until you stumbled onto the library, a place you would always find comfort. A fireplace was lit in the center, this time the flames were the soothing orange you were used to. Several plush chairs and couches were set in front of the fireplace. And it was just your luck that Idia currently sat in one of the seats, reading a book. Not wishing to disturb him, you made your way around the shelves, peaking at the various volumes.
There were many books about machinery, engineering, how magic can improve machines, and so on. This seemed to be mainly for research, not many books for pleasure. Thankfully, you had managed to stumble upon a shelf of just fiction. Flicking through them, you hadn’t heard of most of the books. Many series about magical girls, being sent into a different world, or alternate worlds with evil attacking humanity. Interesting…
Picking up a random book that seemed fascinating, you sat on the couch opposite of Idia. You both sat like that, absorbed in your own little worlds. The book was so interesting that you found yourself forgetting the time, both you and Idia were only interrupted when Ortho came in, letting you both know dinner was ready. You didn’t miss the gleam in Ortho’s eyes when he saw you two together, even if you weren’t talking.
“Did you like ‘Magical Girls Must Band Together and Save the World’?” Ortho asked, seeming a bit cheeky. “That was my brother’s favorite for a while.”
“It’s been good,” You nodded, noticing how Idia was intently watching you from the corner of your eye. “From the title I thought it might be some cliche dribble. I’ve never even seen anything about magical girls before, but what would be their purpose if not saving the world? But the plot has managed to be more in depth than the title implies.”
“The author wanted to deceive the audience to make them think it was just gonna be another boring magical girl book,” Idia explained. “And then wrote the most gut wrenching story they could think of.”
You lit up, was it really gonna get worse? You hadn’t gotten that far yet, but you were sure to try and finish the book before you had to leave. And that’s how you found yourself talking with Idia for the first time without restraint. Asking him more about the book, which led him to spill as much as he could without spoiling. And when you reached the dining room, plates of food before yourselves filled to your liking, and he had started to move on to recommending similar books. Although you found Idia’s shy demeanor endearing, you liked seeing him open up even more. After all, you were both going to marry soon, and you’d rather not be closed off from your spouse (that was one of the reasons you didn’t want an arranged marriage).

So caught up with finishing your book, you spent your whole third day in the library. The fourth day, Ortho found you once more, beaming brightly as always.
“Good morning,” Ortho greeted you. “I have news from my parents.”
“What might that be?” You asked, both of you making your way to the dining room for breakfast.
“My parents want you to accompany Idia to a ball being held in two days,” Ortho explained. “It’s being held by Count Crewel.”
You knew Count Crewel. He allows nothing less than striking to be in his vicinity…you had some work to do to make Idia look and act impeccable. Before you could spiral even further, Ortho spoke up once more.
“Mom and Dad just want you and Idia to have some bonding time,” Ortho smiled. “What better than a fancy dance?”
You felt like you were gonna go crazy. Have some bonding time…at a ball? Clearly the Shroud’s were a bit too reclusive, they never had to deal with the societal pressures that came with being a high ranked noble. Ball’s were the most vicious events, pompous dukes, earls, counts and barons flexing their wealth and status while countess’, viscountess’ and the like mingle and spread rumors (not like the men were any better). If you take the wrong step or wear the wrong color, you’ll become the laughing stock.
In your panicked flurry, you had quickly ate, not paying attention as Ortho stared worryingly. You went to rush to your room, you hadn’t brought many outfits, and you definitely didn’t have anything ball worthy. Before you got to your room, you heard the soothing sound of a violin. You paused, your stressed thoughts taking a short break. Whoever was playing was clearly skilled. Looking around, you found a door that was cracked open. As stealthy as you could, you tiptoed over, peaking into the room. It held multiple instruments, cellos, a piano, violas, and xylophones. In the middle stood none other than Idia, finding yet another way to astound you.
With his eyes closed, he looked at peace as he skillfully played a violin. His fingers pressed down on the strings out of muscle memory while the bow glided gracefully. A beautiful melody encased the room, taking your breath away. It was a beautiful scene. Unfortunately, you had become a bit too entranced, causing you the door to creak open a bit too loudly which alerted the blue haired man. He stopped playing with a screechy halt, his eyes wide in panic. You both stared at each other, anxious and unsure.
“You play beautifully,” You managed to get out, stepping into the room fully.
“I-it’s nothing,” Idia stammered, clearly embarrassed of being caught in a vulnerable moment.
“Nothing?” You questioned. “You clearly have practiced a lot to get to that level. Don’t undersell yourself.” Your words seem to hit him hard as he tries his best to hide his face, the tips of his hair turning a bright pink. Your heart fluttered at the sight, was he really not used to compliments? Did your words affect him so much? You suppose they may if this was where he was raised. As sweet as his parents seemed, this was no place for children to grow.
“I-I…u-uh,” Idia stumbled, unsure how to reply.
“Are there any other pieces you have memorized?”
Idia nodded shyly, turning away from you slightly and bringing the instrument back to his chin. Taking in a deep breath, he started playing another melody. You never knew he was an artist.

The day you were dreading was finally here. The day of the ball. Thankfully, your parents sent you a proper outfit that came just in time. Maids and butlers alike were fluttering around, making sure you and Idia were properly prepared. If anything, they seemed to be excited, they were finally able to do a part of their job they probably never had the chance to do before. This will be the first time in years that a Shroud has shown their face at a public event. If anything it made you anxious. Whether you like it or not, all attention would be on you both. Not only will it be the first time the public will see Idia Shroud, but people will be asking about your engagement. Gosh you were already feeling a headache.
You weren’t able to see Idia until you were both fully done up and in the carriage. The ride was silent. You found yourself trying not to melt. If you thought Idia was handsome before, he was managing to knock you off your feet at the moment. His hair was tied up (for the best as he was the only person you met with flaming hair), he wore a nice suit with frills and cape that fell nicely on his shoulders. He also wore a small tophat that complimented him nicely.
The ride felt way too short. Right as you gathered the courage to comfort your fiance, you were already in front of the mansion that Count Crewel calls home. Taking a deep breath, you exited the carriage, taking Idia’s hand as he helped you down. Linking your arms, you entered the extravagant building, keeping your head held high and your chest puffed out, just like you were taught.
Idia on the other hand, wasn’t handling the attention so well. He shrunk into your side, uneasy as almost every eye fell onto him. With Shroud clinging to your arm, you walked over to the food and drink tables, hoping that a drink would calm him down. Of course, you were quickly stopped and surrounded by aristocrats wanting an in to the Shroud name.
“It’s good to see you again,” A man you barely recognized spoke your last name. “How is your father doing?”
“He’s doing well,” You replied with a strained smile, trying not to melt at the feeling of Idia pushed into your side.
“I heard you're getting married into the Shroud family,” A lady spoke while fluttering her fan. “It seems like the rumors are true.”
“Yes,” You nodded. “Idia and I will be wed in a few weeks.”
“The Shroud’s haven’t been seen in so long,” A different man huffed (they all blended together at a certain point). “Surprised they’re still around. With how they can’t even take proper care of their-”
“Excuse me,” You cut in with a glare. “I would appreciate it if you refrained from insulting my fiance’s family. They have done a lot more than you after all. Or is having an affair with a young lady important?”
You didn’t know where that came from. The sharp gasps and hushed whispers were nearly enough to make you shrink, but the look on Idia’s face made it worthwhile. He was trying to hide his amusement (and failing) as everyone whispered about the man's supposed affair. You actually didn’t even know if that was true, but you wouldn’t be surprised if it was (neither was anyone else apparently). Even if you had just slandered him with false claims you wouldn’t feel bad. Who did he think he was to speak so rudely to someone you cared about?
Your parents would be ashamed, but it seemed that Idia was becoming a bad influence as you could care less about your reputation. No, instead you let your feelings take over and talked back to someone instead of letting them steamroll over you with petty remarks and pleasant smiles.
“Please excuse us,” You politely left the small group, leaving behind a blubbering baron. When you got to a sparse area with a drink in each of your hands you found yourself internally panicking.
“I can’t believe I did that,” You moaned, trying to hide behind the tiny glass.
Meanwhile, Idia seemed to be having the time of his life, giggling away, “That was hilarious.”
“I just ruined both of our reputations,” You continued. “The backlash is going to be terrible.”
“Meh,” He merely shrugged with a sharp grin. “The guy totally deserved it. How did you know he was having an affair?”
“I don’t,” You grumbled, taking a sip. That seemed to tickle Idia even more as he nearly burst out laughing. “I’m glad you’re having a fun time.”
“I’d rather be anywhere but here,” Idia shrugged. “But at least I have you as a shield against the weirdo’s.”
Thankfully, the rest of the night went more smoothly. You mingled with Count Crewel and some investors that held stake in your fathers business, but otherwise people seemed to keep their distance. Probably scared that you held dirt and would expose them. It was a huge self report honestly. Idia refused to dance, but you had to lightly encourage (force) him, as at the very least, it would redeem you in your parents eyes. You had to place his hands in the correct spots, and you took the lead (Idia doesn’t have much experience dancing if your sore toes told you anything).
By the end of the night, you both were exhausted. The carriage ride felt ten times longer. You really did try to keep your eyes open, but they slipped closed, and you lost count of the time. The bumpy ride made your head drop onto Idia’s shoulder, and his warmth was just what you needed to make your mind slip away.
Idia on the other hand felt like he was going to melt into a puddle of goo. You, a clearly attractive person who stood up for him that night, was now using him as a pillow. Was he even comfortable? He can’t imagine he was with all the buttons and frills that lined his outfit. There was another thing eating away at him as he watched you. Would you really be okay trapped with him? Idia found himself wishing you would be…because he found himself slowly getting attached to you.

So much had happened, you nearly forgot that your stay was already over. Today was your last day at the Shroud household and you would be going back home that night. Honestly, even with how gloomy and dark it was, it was charming in its own sense. Not to mention the people made it livable. Ortho had forced Idia to come out and spend time with you before your departure. Pulling out some games, the three of you spent your time playfully bickering and laughing about certain memories.
It was odd. The next time you’ll be seeing Idia, you’ll be at the altar exchanging vows. You still didn’t like the idea, felt like it was way too soon. But seeing Idia and Ortho have some fun while playing board games…it didn’t seem as scary. At least you know you’ll both get along. Sure, it’ll take some time for you to fully come to see him as your husband, wishing you had some more time to get to know each other first, you weren’t devastated. You’ll both warm up to each other eventually, for now, you’d like to spend your time with your new friends…your new family.

You never thought Leona would actually take this date seriously. Honestly, when you first call him, you half expect him to suggest, "Let's just take a nap or something." Instead, his voice is low and smug, almost purring through the phone.
“Sure. I’ll pick you up later. Be ready.”
And just like that, he hangs up before you can ask for specifics. Typical. You're prepared for some half-hearted effort involving him dragging you to a secluded spot to nap under the stars or something like that. But then, a knock sounds at the door of Ramshackle, and there stands Ruggie with a bouquet.
“These are from Leona,” Ruggie says with a grin that’s two parts mischievous, one part disbelief. “He told me to get the ‘good ones,’ whatever that means. I charged him double, by the way.”
You take the flowers, cheeks warming, trying not to feel too charmed by the fact that the laziest lion you know thought to send you flowers. “Compensation good?”
“Let’s just say I’m eating like royalty tonight.” Ruggie winks before scampering off, probably with plans to milk his housewarden’s generosity for the rest of the week.
When Leona finally arrives at your doorstep, you're stunned into silence. He’s dressed to kill, sharp black slacks, a sleek button-up rolled at the sleeves. Effortlessly regal.
"You..." You blink. "You’re somehow even prettier than usual. How is that fair?"
He grumbles, averting his gaze, but you catch the way his chest puffs out just a little. “Tch. Cut it out.”
“Admit it—you love the compliments,” you tease, looping your arm around his as you step outside.
Leona scoffs but doesn’t pull away. “You gonna keep flattering me all night, or are we leaving?”
And so begins the wildest date you could have imagined: Leona, the notorious nap king, escorting you to a local festival, of all things.
You glance up at him as you stroll through the brightly lit stalls. “I thought you hated crowds.”
“I do,” he replies, but then adds in a gruff mutter, “It’s fine if it’s with you.”
Your heart skips a beat. You're lucky he looks so good because you might’ve fainted on the spot otherwise.
At one of the stalls, you spot a mountain of cotton candy, pastel pink and blue fluff that looks like it’ll melt if you so much as breathe on it. You buy a stick and tear off a piece, holding it up to Leona.
“C’mon, try it.”
He eyes the sugary fluff suspiciously. “That’s just sugar and air.”
“Exactly. Now open up.”
With an exaggerated groan, Leona leans down, and you pop the piece into his mouth. His brow furrows as he chews. “Way too sweet.”
But the next time you hold up another piece, he still eats it, grumbling under his breath about “sugar addicts.” You don’t miss the tiny, fond smile that sneaks onto his face, though.
As you continue through the festival, you spot a prize stall lined with plushies, including a little dragon that immediately catches your eye.
“I need that,” you say, determination sparking.
You try... and fail. Repeatedly. Leona watches your attempts with a smirk, arms crossed like he’s enjoying the show.
When you lose for the fifth time, he sighs dramatically. “Move.”
He steps up to the game and, with one smooth flick of his wrist, nails it on the first try. But instead of the dragon plush, he gives the attendant a lazy grin. “The lion.”
When he hands you the lion plush, you stare at it, confused. “What happened to the dragon?”
“Lions are better,” Leona says, like it’s the most obvious thing in the world. “No debate.”
Despite yourself, you can’t help but smile. It’s ridiculous, but it’s him, and somehow that makes it perfect.
Later, when he takes you to an absurdly expensive restaurant, you raise an eyebrow. “Are you sure about this? It’s... kind of pricey.”
He gives you a flat look. “Order whatever you want. Don’t make me repeat myself.”
So, naturally, you do. And the food is fantastic. Leona leans back in his chair, watching you with a lazy smirk as you happily dig into your meal.
When the date winds down and Leona walks you back to Ramshackle, the night air is cool, and you instinctively rub your arms. Without a word, Leona shrugs off his jacket and drapes it over your shoulders.
You clutch onto his arm with a grin, snuggling into the warmth. “Thanks, Leona.”
He shakes his head, amused. “You’re lucky I like you.”
“Of course you do.” You laugh, leaning against him. “Oh! Did I tell you what Ace and Deuce did earlier today? You won’t believe it.”
He humors you as you chatter away, recounting the latest shenanigans. “So, Grim decided to ‘supervise,’ which really just meant eating half the snacks while Ace accidentally set off the fire alarm—again.”
Leona snorts softly. “Idiots.”
“Yeah, but they’re my idiots.”
When you finally reach Ramshackle’s doorstep, you turn to face him, a little reluctant for the night to end. On a whim, you step forward and wrap your arms around him, hugging him tightly before pressing a kiss to his cheek.
Leona freezes for half a second, and when you pull away, his expression is somewhere between surprised and utterly smitten.
“Goodnight, Leona,” you say softly, watching as he blinks down at you like you just shattered every lazy expectation he had about this date.
He clears his throat, looking away, but you catch the faintest hint of a smile tugging at his lips. “Yeah... night.”
As he turns to leave, you can’t help but feel like you’ve just unlocked a whole new side of him—and you kind of love it.
You’ve been talking about this video game figure for weeks. Every time you hang out with Leona, he hears about it. Well, "hang out" is a generous term—he naps on your lap or leans against you, and you yap his ear off about how amazing the game is and how this figure is the holy grail of limited merch.
“I’ve been doing everything,” you rant one day, lying next to him in the botanical garden. “Crowley made me do ten extra assignments this week. I even agreed to clean Grim’s litter box without arguments—twice! But it’s worth it. If I get that figure, my life will be complete.”
Leona, who’s half-asleep with his head resting on your shoulder, cracks an eye open. “That good, huh?”
“Yes, that good. There are only ten in the world, Leona. Ten.”
He grunts, shifting a little to get more comfortable. “Better hope your luck’s good, herbivore. Sounds like a lotta effort for a toy.”
“It’s not a toy,” you huff dramatically. “It’s a collectible figure, and it’s the coolest thing in existence. Just wait—when it drops tomorrow, I’m getting it.”
And yet, the universe doesn’t care about your efforts.
You stare at your phone screen in disbelief the next day. The site crashes, the countdown ends, and the figure sells out in 0.2 seconds flat. You refresh. Then refresh again. But it’s gone—snatched from your grasp like a mirage in the desert.
“No... no, no, no.” You sit there, devastated, as the weight of your failure sinks in. After all the work, all the chores, and all the emotional speeches to Leona, you’ve been denied. The limited-edition figure remains forever out of reach.
By the time you see Leona later, your mood is somewhere between tragic despair and begrudging acceptance. You find him lounging in the garden again, his favorite napping spot.
“Didn’t get it, huh?” he asks, his voice carrying that lazy drawl as you flop down beside him.
“Nope,” you sigh, resting your forehead on your knees. “All that work, all that hope... and nothing.”
Without another word, Leona pulls something from behind him and chucks it onto your lap.
You blink. Then blink again.
It’s the figure. The figure. THE limited-edition figure you’ve been pining after for weeks.
“Leona???” you squawk, holding it up like it might vanish into thin air if you let go. “What—how—why—?”
He just shrugs. “Still the second prince, y’know.”
“You—" Your jaw drops. “Did you use royalty status to get me this figure?!”
“Yeah.” He says it like it’s the most obvious thing in the world, like he just asked the palace cook to make toast instead of pulling strings for a rare collector’s item.
You gape at him, torn between disbelief and giddiness. “Leona... that’s cheating.”
“So?” He leans back with a satisfied smirk, clearly amused by your reaction. “You wanted it, didn’t you?”
You can’t help it—you burst into laughter, clutching the figure like it’s the greatest treasure ever gifted to you. “You’re impossible.”
Leona tugs you down beside him, trapping you in his arms. “Yeah, yeah. Now quit yappin’ and let me nap.”
Still grinning like a fool, you curl into him, giggling into his hair. “You’re way too good to me, you know that?”
He huffs, but there’s no hiding the small smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. His hand rests lazily against your back, warm and grounding. “Hmph. Lucky I like you.”
And just like that, he drifts off into sleep, his arms snug around you. And you? You lie there, feeling like the happiest person alive, hugging your figure close while Leona naps against you, his soft breaths the perfect lullaby.
The first sign something is wrong comes when Grim tries waking you up for your usual chaos-filled day.
“Hey, get up, henchhuman! We’ve got things to do!” he says, poking your cheek with one of his fluffy paws. “It’s already late! If Crowley gets mad, I ain’t takin' the fall!”
Normally, you’d groan and roll out of bed—or at least threaten Grim with chores—but today? All you can manage is a weak grunt before you flop back onto your pillow like a defeated pancake.
“Henchhuman?” Grim nudges you again, this time with more urgency. You crack one eye open just long enough to see his ears flatten in concern. “Oi, don’t ignore me—what’s wrong?”
Your head is heavy, and it feels like your bones have melted into jelly. You try to say I think I’m dying, but all that comes out is a sad, congested whimper.
Grim’s eyes widen, and suddenly, he’s a blur of blue fur and panic. “You’re dying!” he yells, as if confirming the worst-case scenario. “Don’t go toward the light, henchhuman! I’ll be right back—stay alive!!”
Before you can reassure him—or at least remind him that people don’t die from mild fevers—Grim is already out the door, paws skidding against the floor like a tiny tornado.
Somewhere across campus, Leona is enjoying a particularly satisfying mid-morning nap in the botanical gardens when an absolute menace of a furball barrels into him.
Leona cracks open one bleary eye. “Dying?” he repeats with a skeptical grunt, already half-expecting Grim to be overreacting. “Probably just overslept.”
“I know the difference between sleeping and dying!” Grim shrieks, paws batting at Leona’s face. “They're burning up, can’t even sit up! You gotta do something!”
Leona grumbles under his breath, but he’s on his feet before Grim can push him again. The usual lazy slouch is gone, replaced by swift, purposeful movements.
By the time he strides into your room, Leona has already called his personal doctor, much to Ruggie’s dismay (“Do you know what time it is?! Do I get paid overtime for this??”). Leona doesn’t care. He’s moving fast—like a lion with a mission.
It’s a blur after that. You vaguely register a cool hand against your burning forehead, Leona’s voice a low rumble beside you. The doctor checks your pulse, takes your temperature, and declares it’s just a fever with some exhaustion thrown in. Nothing dangerous, but definitely enough to flatten you.
“Hah.” Leona lets out a short sigh of relief, slumping in the chair beside your bed. “Told ya Grim, not dead.”
“Yeah, well…” Grim’s still pacing at the edge of your bed, tail twitching in frustration. “They looked dead, okay?! How was I supposed to know?”
“You weren’t. That’s why I’m here,” Leona says flatly, though his tone is less irritated than usual.
The next few hours pass in a fog of sleep, soft voices, and the occasional pressure of something cool against your skin. Ruggie swings by every now and then to drop off food, grinning as he deposits soup and medicine like it’s some kind of delivery service.
“Man, if I knew babysitting was part of my job description, I’d have charged extra,” Ruggie teases, setting down a tray.
Leona just rolls his eyes. “Get lost, hyena.”
Despite his usual snark, Leona is surprisingly attentive. He makes sure you drink water, feeds you spoonfuls of soup even when you mumble protests, and keeps an arm draped lazily around you when you shiver. If anyone asks, he’ll say it’s just because you’re annoying and need constant supervision.
When you finally come to, it’s because something warm and heavy is curled against you. You blink a few times, head still foggy, and realize it’s Leona—completely sprawled across the chair next to your bed, but with one hand tightly clasping yours.
You smile, warmth blooming in your chest at the sight of him. Carefully, you nudge closer, nestling against his arm. The movement stirs him awake, his golden eyes blinking down at you groggily.
“You awake now?” he murmurs, voice rough with sleep.
“Barely,” you whisper, squeezing his hand. “Thanks for taking care of me.”
Leona grunts, but the way his thumb brushes over your knuckles is answer enough.
Just as you’re about to fully enjoy the peace, a loud, dramatic voice cuts through the moment.
“Finally!” Grim bursts into the room, leaping onto your bed. “Took you long enough to wake up! I thought I’d have to hire a priest or somethin’!”
You chuckle softly, the sound a little scratchy. “Didn’t know you cared that much.”
“Pfft! As if.” Grim crosses his arms, looking away with a huff. “I just didn’t wanna be stuck with Crowley as my only companion. He’s useless.”
But despite his words, Grim scrambles onto your lap anyway, curling up against your chest with a grumble. “Don’t get sick again, okay? It’s a pain.”
You pet his fur, grinning as you feel him relax. “Okay, okay. No more dying.”
Leona shifts beside you, rolling his eyes. “What, am I invisible?”
“Shh,” you murmur, leaning your head against his shoulder. “Just let me enjoy my two favorite cats for a minute.”
Leona huffs, but there’s a flicker of a smile tugging at the corner of his lips. “I'm not a cat. You’re lucky I’m in a good mood.”
You grin back at him, and for once, you don’t need words to say thank you. He knows.
You like to think of yourself as a strong person. Someone who can hold their own in this chaotic, magic-ridden school where everything from magical accidents to actual ghost attacks is a typical Tuesday. You’ve handled your fair share of weird situations and even gotten through them without embarrassing yourself too badly. But… you are still a magicless human. And that’s a fact you can’t change.
So when three tall, muscle-bound Savanaclaw students corner you in a dimly-lit corridor on your way to visit Leona, your heart sinks.
"Where ya headin', little herbivore?" The biggest one grins, flashing sharp teeth that remind you just how much worse your day could get.
“Leona’s been hanging out with you a lot, huh?” another one sneers, blocking your path. “Think that makes you special or something?”
"Maybe they've got some kind of deal with him," the third one suggests, his voice dripping with mockery. "How about you tell us what’s really going on between you two?"
Your stomach twists, but you keep your face neutral. No way are you going to let them see how nervous you are. "How about you back off before you embarrass yourselves?" you say, proud of how steady your voice sounds.
The tallest one leans in, his grin widening. “Look at you, acting all tough. Too bad there’s no magic in that mouth of yours.”

The three of them are still jeering at you when you hear footsteps approaching from behind. Slow, measured, and heavy with the kind of weight that makes everyone in the hallway tense.
"Oi," a familiar, low growl cuts through the noise like a hot knife through butter.
All three of them freeze. You glance over your shoulder—and there he is. Leona Kingscholar.

Then, from across the room, Epel starts cackling like a madman.

“Yeah,” Ace adds, smirking. “It’s like watching two completely different wildlife documentaries crash into each other.”
Before you can stop him, Sebek jumps in, indignant. “I cannot believe you would choose that lazy lout over the Young Master!” He practically growls the words.
“Sebek, Leona is—” you try to reason, but Sebek steamrolls right over you.
“He sleeps through his classes! He’s rude! And worst of all, he doesn’t respect Master Malleus!”

“Maybe it’s a term of endearment,” Jack grumbles defensively.
