âWhy did you never say it back? Why could you never tell me you loved me when I know you did? Why was that always too hard to admit?â, he asks, and she sighs, because he has every right to ask and know, because she has the answer, because when she saw him again and again tonight she knew she couldnât escape much longer.
âHonestly?â, she says, mostly to buy time, and looks at him nodding, and feels it again, just a glimmer, deep inside, just for the shortest of times, as familiar as his eyes, as undeniable as the moon above them. She feels it again, and then she takes a breath, hoping her lungs will feel different after this air, after this truth.
âYouâre right, I did love you. I probably loved you before you ever loved me back, and I loved you long after I left. I loved you so much and for so long that at the time, I told myself I didnât need to tell you, because all the proof you needed was right there in your hands, my skin, in all the places weâve been and all the other promises we made. I thought not saying it would make it more special, like it was my little secret that everyone knew about.
But really, I think I was scared. Because I loved you first, and I loved you more, and still you loved me better, I was so scared youâd see it too and let that love hang in the air when you left. Losing you scared the words into me, hid them in a place that was too fragile for the world or even you to know.â She takes a deep breath, and the night helps her mouth say the things she never even knew she needed to say.
âAnd Iâm sorry about that, because, turns out, everything I did to stop myself from telling you, or from loving you more everyday ended up biting me in the ass. I left you because I didnât want to be left, and it hurt to finally acknowledge how dumb that was. I broke us, and Iâm sorry.â
She looks up at him, and she thanks God heâs still got a soft smile on his face after everything.
âWhat?â, she asks when his smile turns into a grin.
âYou still talk like a poem, you know?â She laughs at his words, and he pulls her into a hug.
âThank you,â he whispers in her hair, âfor almost saying it back this time.â
