I spend my nights Googling the scientific evidence for the soul

I, a mere sprout in this world, Will soon grow. I am a fungus, an ugly word, But not the atrocious kind. As I stand here, I am meager, Unseen, trivial, But I stand here nonetheless.

I cannot remember where i placed the last year. It was shoved on the highest shelf, obstructed by study and recovery. This year was necessary, though I think that amidst this year, I forgot how to be eighteen.

The Night I Fell in Love
The night I fell in love, an ocean of embers danced overhead, blurred by the cosmos and cheap spirits. In a crowded room of solitude you pulled me closer. Our streams of thoughts were broken by the screams of disillusioned youth, as another glass bottle floated towards the cobblestones. We spoke about how we could never be- after all, you were not the type to meet my parents.
As civilization began to rise, in rays, over the dejected cement town, we parted. an occasion left, only to return two years from now, awash with red wine and hopes.
Blood has been spilled On the cobblestones of Dublin From words never spoken. The wounds have been bottled, Sealed with wax and hidden In the far reaches of the mind. “Hello”, “How do you do?”, “I’m dying inside”, “Lovely weather, isn’t it?"

The veil would cloud her judgement. Embroidered roses would leak Into her eyes, their thorns scratching And dropping glass tears. The white satin would be wrapped tightly. Too tightly to allow for breath. No words would be spoken- Or so they had hoped. The anemone bouquet shatters As it crashes from her fingers. The hinges groaned As she stormed out of the Stuff wooden promise, Leaving the ashes behind her.

Sometimes, The words just don't fall right.

You Taste of cigarettes and trouble, But I Could not be closer to heaven.

I gave you pieces of me; An eye, a hand, a few bones here and there. It is only now I realise I am in so much pain.

At times I wish I was one With the shadow dolls Lined up on the belt. Glassed eyes stare As they play out their virtuous lives Acting a fanciful role. But the porcelain perfection cracks when the shelf breaks. These dolls Are cold to the touch, Of a piece, but for the few Who take it upon theirselves To rise higher, And higher still.

We sat on the rusted planks Of the paint-peeling bench, And uncovered words Of a sensation stronger than love. Overhead a sea of flickering, blazen fireflies Danced among our smoky minds And the sparks rose from the cruel cement, Soaring to find life in the sky.

The silence rings in my ears; It is deafening. My lips are dappled With the memory of cries unsaid. Black framed pulse and rim my vision, A drunken haze, blurred by swimming lights and the remnants of tears shed. I reach to touch my cheek, Fingers trembling with precarious precision. My face is no longer my own.

I hide my bullshit behind red lips, A sickly sweet smile And precarious laughter. I give you all you expect, wrapped In silk ribbon and petticoats, A siren's demeanour. I smile, as you lap it up in your zealous confidence, and eagerly anticipate The lusting looks on your friend's faces As you recount how lucky you got.

Each time I am with you I change, Into a child, a young girl Composed of a pretty face and the will to please. I lose my own beliefs, replace them With a weaker version of yours, In a half-hearted hope of being loved. I am more than I have led you to believe. I am whole Without you.

I wish I could reverse time And tell you that everything would be fine. We would sip tea and talk about feelings, One sorrow-filled mind mending the other. I wish you did not have to go through it alone, That you would be helped, just as you have healed me, And that somewhere under a starry night The sadness would not last forever

I do not need you To make me feel human, as if I myself am only half a being. Without you birds will continue to fly, The sun will rise its constant rhythm. Without you I will continue to breathe As I have every moment of my existence. I do not need you.
