This is the side blog for my superhero thoughts. My main is @excuse-me-thanks if you’re looking for some general derangement that has little to do with vigilantism, typically.

Important to know about me:

I (she/her) am a 20-something who started reading comics back in May because the Matt Fraction Hawkeye found me in a used bookstore like the can of Chef Boyardee in that one comercial. I spent about a month absolutely destroying some Daredevil before moving on to DC in July. (Bet you can’t guess why!)

I know absolutely fuckall about comics, universes, and continuities. I am here for the vibes alone.

my "How 2 Start Reading Batman Comics" zine I debuted at MICE this year! it was soooo much fun to put together, especially for baby's first mini-zine. Printed, it's only 6 interior pages and about medium hand size.

reminder: this is written for people who genuinely have no idea where to start, and it's from the POV of someone (me) who managed to get into Batman this way!

Sometimes I think about how sad Kons early days must have been. Like you're new to everything and all you know is that you're supposed to live up to the impossible standard that is The Superman. And when you meet your idol... he hated you.

Superman, Clark Kent. The guy who sees good in everyone and beauty in everything, hates you and your existence. So maybe he is bad, maybe he is wrong just by his existence.

Now I know that it's a lot for Clark and was hard for him, I'm not downplaying that, it's just from Kons perspective... that's gotta suck.

That boy needed a hug and a healthy mentor (not like those really exist in hero work)

hey i saw this in the yj98 tag but... this isn't actually true of comics canon in the slightest. in fact, clark was literally willing to throw down with project cadmus over kon's freedom within like days of meeting him (adventures of superman #506) and was the one who made him actually like the name superboy for himself after he'd been rejecting it all along (same issue). kon's decision to leave metropolis was, in-universe, entirely his own, and out of universe was because editorial wanted superboy and superman to be separate titles!

in the comics, clark and kon have a very positive relationship. clark swings by hawaii to cheer kon up after he gets bad news (superboy '94 annual #2), offers him the name "kon-el" to signify their bond as chosen family (which makes kon so happy he cries) (superboy '94 #59), and teaches him how to milk a cow (superman '87 #155), among other things. clark even specifies in superboy '94 #40 that he doesn't trust cadmus at all, but he loves kon and will do anything for him. in superboy '94 #70 he even tells kon that he trusts him with his life, and that of anyone who's ever worn the S-shield, he feels closest to him.

there's a lot of tragedy about kon's early life to be sure! but any rejection from clark simply isn't part of it in the comics; that was invented for the young justice tv show for whatever reason. clark loves kon a lot!!! kon's his little guy. :)

ugh we need more manipulative characters that aren’t evil. lie and cheat and steal for a good cause. control every narrative. use narcissism for justice. ruin all of your personal relationships for the good of the mission.

art in comic books isn't ugly anymore that's why they all suck now. nowadays it's too pretty and stylised it almost bores me to look at them. the most enjoyable comics you'll ever read will have art so questionable it'll make you think the artist has never stepped outside or seen human beings before
