…. Yeah you still don’t have me that the tapes are Web. Because Martin asks that. Annabelle never actually answers. What is said is

MARTIN: Wait. Wait… The tapes… ANNABELLE: A fine material to spin a web with, don’t you think? MARTIN: What? All this time, through all of this, it, it was just you spying on us?  ANNABELLE: Oh Martin. You have no idea who’s listening, do you?

She is telling him no there! In a convoluted way, because that’s what she does, she doesn’t give straight answers, but she is denying it. Martin states an idea and she tells him he has no idea of the truth, and thus, his idea is false. 

Yes she says that ominous part about the tape being a fine material to spin a web but I think that can be interpreted as ‘the tapes already exist, and the web is harnessing them as a building material for their web of plans’. It’s like hijacking a frequency, shown by how Annabelle knows things, or literally has some of the tapes lying around and has since season four when Jon went to Hill Top and found Anglerfish playing there.

I’m not one hundred percent sure on what the tapes are, and that’s okay because neither does Martin. The entity itself, the one indescribable creature that has each of the ‘powers’ as it’s limbs, the full spectrum of colour as a whole? A specific branch of it, something new we didn’t see coming like the Extinction? Hell, maybe the Extinction itself. I’m not sure. But it is not the Web, or at least not the Web alone. The Web is using them, or influencing them, but it is not the sole creator of them. There’s something more going on.

I'm just saying, the Extinction is associated with:

doors to other dimensions

man-made objects and structures falling to ruin

being trapped as a witness against your will

and as I understand it Martin is currently being dangled against a door to another dimension that was opened when a camera was broken, and Annabelle has implied that while she used the tapes ("great material for a web"), there's more to it than that ("you have no idea what's listening").

i could be reading too much into it, but damn did the fearscape in this episode prey HARD on Jon’s loneliness without Martin

like, not only was the domain itself a combination of the Vast and the Lonely, but the statement also fixated on literally drowning in helplessness and hopelessness, and was noticeably told from the second person “you” POV to be as immersive and personal as possible

not to mention that this is the first time since being attacked by Daisy that Jon has felt pain and exhaustion, even when still connected to the Eye and not cut off like at Salesa’s or the tunnels. Again, it’s as if the domain was dedicated to reminding him of Martin’s absence, forcing him to row alone across a sprawling, empty expanse and to really feel the cramps caused by prolonged, solitary exertion 

it just goes to show that even being the Ceaseless Watcher’s special boy doesn’t protect you from being a victim in the changed world. it’s like what Jon said in MAG178: no one gets what they deserve, only what hurts them the most. Even him.

i think i finally clarified why i'm so set on the extinction being the mechanism for ending the fear world, and why i think it's gotta be martin who enacts it.

I'm still extremely behind but I have to say I'm giggling so much at the idea that anyone actually thought Distortion!Helen was a friend? Like, her vibe as the face of the Distortion was always mean as hell, she was always playing games.

Like, yeah, I loved Knifehands McWife now and then but I knew, viscerally, that she was Bad and Out For Her Own Damn Self the whole time?

Like, my condolences to everyone hurt emotionally by this reveal, but I've known this all along.

I'm like, five or so episodes behind but judging from the trending tag right now, I was right to have an intrinsic and visceral "nah" reaction to the concept of web!Martin.

I know that sounds silly to say, when we just debunked web!Martin, but bear with me for a moment.

The big thing about the statements we've been given about The Extinction is that, primarily, they are fed by The Eye and The Lonely, with the door motif from the Distortion thrown in for good measure.

The Extinction is, literally, a fear soup of the three characters who've had the most screentime this season. The Extinction is, fundamentally, a Martin thing, because he is the one touched by the Eye and the Lonely.

He is, as I've always instinctively known, the Final Witness.

ok but also. consider Peter is trying to do this as quickly as possible so he can just get back to his ship and not have to interact with people again till his annual date/alimony negotiation with Jonah. So by the time he actually makes it to the Magnus Institute, eyeballs in hand, his patience is wearing thin. He casts his glance around. Sees Elias. Is like. “Yeah this guy is suitable.” And does the switch. 

Jonah is furious because “Him?! Really?” Yes Elias is attractive and admittedly has a great voice but he is also a stoner and is currently working as a filing clerk with no prospects. And now Jonah has to make his sudden rise to head of the institute not look wildly suspicious. 

Peter probably just shrugs like “eh. maybe don’t die so suddenly next time.” Jonah of course wants another divorce for this comment alone despite the fact that they are already currently divorced.
