Hiya! I'm Azzy. (She/her, demiromantic.) I work in Flying-type conservation and research, but mostly I'm here to post about my prizewinning show hydreigon, Bad Mightyena's Fabled Beginnings.

I live with my two Pokémon partners (Fable the Hydreigon and Jadeite the Braviary), my human partner T (he/it), and his Pokémon partner (Sulfur the Cyndaquil).

probably mostly lowstakes shenanigans for now but i miight eventually do higher stakes things here? energy and motivation permitting. i have chronic fatigue so those things are in short supply sometimes

Would the almighty Arceus make a good companion?

I’m sure that you probably knew this when you asked, but unfortunately Arceus, mythological creator of the entire universe, would not make an ideal house pet.

To begin with, they’re pretty huge. Standing at ten-and-a-half feet tall and weighing over seven hundred pounds, Arceus would probably have a hard time fitting in most homes or vehicles. They could certainly live outside… but let’s be honest, size is far from the biggest issue.

According to the mythology of the Sinnoh Region, Arceus is older than the universe (Pearl, Platinum, Black/White, Black2/White2, Y, AlphaSapphire, ShiningPearl) and in fact created the world we live in today (Diamond, Platinum, HeartGold/SoulSilver, Black/White, Black2/White2, X, OmegaRuby, BrilliantDiamond, Legends: Arceus). Whether or not these legends are true, it is undeniable that Arceus wields an essentially incomprehensible power, which makes them an undeniably dangerous house pet. From Seismic Toss to Earth Power, Hyper Beam to their signature Judgement, Arceus could essentially destroy any human structure they wanted on a whim.

Now, would Arceus do this? That, I don’t know. We don’t really have much information about this pokémon’s behavior, owing simply to the fact that there is only one of them in the world and they have not been meticulously studied. This brings up the age-old problem with Mythical pokémon on this blog: not only is there a question as to whether they would make a good pet, there’s a much bigger question of if it would even be possible. Even if you were to encounter Arceus anyways, would they be interested in being a pet? I’d bet they probably wouldn’t, seeing as they have a lot of do.

All in all, given their immense size and even more immense power, and owing to the fact that there is only one of them in our whole universe, Arceus would most certainly not make a good house pet.

How do professional trainers deal with having to change what pokemon they use? Isn't that sad? Having to leave one of them behind?

Just because you switch them out of your main battle team doesn't mean they're not in your life anymore! When I was on the gym circuit I had 8 Pokémon that I'd rotate in and out of my team on a regular cycle. I did eventually retire one of them completely because she wasn't handling the stress of travelling very well, and that was a little sad, but it was the best thing for her health and happiness, and she ended up with a friend where I get to visit her regularly!

I talk about different pokemon breeds here, so I wanna say something related to it: sometimes, just because a pokemon has a different pattering or trait (like a Pikachu with floppy ears), doesn't ALWAYS mean it's a different breed. Sometimes, Pikachu have floppy ears. Sometimes, a Flareon has an eevee with a unique coat pattern in the litter. It just happens sometimes. These things often have names ("floppy-eared", "spotted"), but those describe different traits. Not the breed :)

the whole bandages thing being said, Koen’s been getting a lot better about the force he uses to bite me. I actually haven’t had to bandage myself due to anything I got from him in two and a half weeks! goes to show that teaching Deino to be gentler is much more productive than reprimanding them for biting entirely.

in the wild, they’re able to bite their siblings with a hard amount of force due to their naturally thick skin, but those siblings will cry whenever they do start biting down too hard. the trick is to make a sound a Deino will easily understand as “I’m in pain, please stop”, like a high pitched yelp or whine. it takes them a while to register the fact you’re not another Deino and understand your skin is softer than one’s, but over time they’ll learn the bite tolerance of each individual they live with.

what kind of linguistics are we referring to in this case?

Pokemon 'classifications' i think(?) People on this site use words like 'dog' 'cat' 'bird' 'rat' 'horse' ect ect for groups of pokemon.

I don't want to talk about it too much in depth but these words and phrases started emerging early to mid 1900s and it was a kind of like. Huge deal at the time. Idk. Like. I understand why people use 'em but most biologists agree that these 'groupings' are not scientific as there are as many exceptions as there are rules. I'm not like. pressed about this I just. Studying rotomblr users under a microscope.

over here the vast majority of those sorts of words can be traced back to various proto-languages in terms of their origins. they're pre-scientific.

like, lils will go on about how "fish" can only be consistent cladistically if you take it to mean "cordate" which means humans are fish to make it fully scientifically consistent

Common names aren't meant to be cladistically consistent or scientifically meaningful groupings. They're for regular people in regular conversations where it doesn't matter if you're not describing things with scientific precision as long as people understand what you mean. They don't need to describe the cladistic relationships between things because it genuinely doesn't matter to most people that Unovan bluebells are in the borage family and Galarian bluebells are in the the asparagus family, and for the people who it does matter to, well, that's why we also call those plants Mertensia virginica and Hyacinthoides non-scripta.

the crazy thing about that is that it absolutely wouldnt take a legendary to kill me. a lot of pokemon could kill me with the right amount of motivation. i bet a bellsprout with a grudge could do me in by 4:00pm today if it so chose

Something to remember and keep in mind when taking on a high energy pokemon is that: Just because they prefer training or playing instead of being pet/"loved on" doesn't mean they don't love you

Their way of bonding with you is through being active and doing things with you

GOING TO SINNOH FOR THE SUMMER!!! Prof. Rowan landed me a wildlife survey job ^-^ I'm gonna borrow my old teammates back from his lab and take them to hike Mt. Coronet when I get some free time. Maybe take Fable to a Super Contest & check in on the Lake Valor restoration project
